I think I have tinnitus - it sounds like I have cicadas

Posted: Feb 11, 2014

I have this ongoing now for four days.  I do not notice it when I am busy but when I go to bed at night, it is very annoying.  I have tried an ear wax removal kit and it did not provide any relief.  Anyone know of a home rememdy?  Thanks in advance!

Well, I would check first to see what is causing you to have this noise in your ears. Tinnitus is often just a symptom of something else going on--may be nothing, may be something.

So, before you treat something with anything, you should get a diagnosis by a health professional.

I have it also - sm

First course of action is to see the doc. If there is nothing wrong, then nothing can be done about it. I didn't realize how BAD mine was until the power went out one night (I have the habit of drowing out the ringing with the TV)..the quiet quite literally drives me insane. Now, I keep a battery operated radio just in case. I have a friend that tried all the experimental treatments, nothing helped, find whatever white noise you can drown it out with and use it. Sorry I don't have better news for you, been dealing with it for years now..SOMETIMES, antidepressants will help, but I can't take them, they make me jumpy.

I have the exact symptoms - as you

I've been an MT for 25+ years and no problems at all until about 2 months ago. The noise is becoming debilitating...just like cicadas. It's beginning to block out other sounds now.

I have to wonder if it's the use of internet transcription platforms causing this, because telephone lines and Lanier, Dictaphone, and other systems never bothered me at all. The use of cell phones these days is also problematic for me -- causing headaches and even nausea.

I hate to think of my entire future being filled with sounds of the forest, especially when I've been so careful to keep the volume low.

Would you mind sharing what platform you're using? I'm using Fusion.

I have been transcribing 40+ years and this is the first time this has ever happened to me. I also use noise-cancelling headphones to watch TV as my husband is in the next room watching his history and science channel shows while I gravitate more towards movies. I have been using them for three years. It seems a bit better this morning. I used a wax removal system before bed last night and went to sleep with cotton balls in my ears. Hopefully it will stay away.

I have this, too. It's a constant electrical kind of hissing sound in my head. I swear, at times it seems I can't hear myself think! If I take NSAIDs for anything, it gets a whole lot worse. But, anyway, I've found a simple pressure point you might want to try. It helps sometimes for me when I'm trying to relax before going to sleep. It's a pressure point located at the base your index and little finger, palm side, on either hand,. Just press a bit firmly on that area for a few minutes. I find that it really can cut the noise down to a level that isn't so bothersome. Maybe someone knows of some other pressure points for this problem...

Sorry, meant to say pressure point at the base of the RING and little finger on either hand. Hope it helps...

Press both at the same time? - Kind of awkward

So, you press both at the same time somehow with the other hand?

How to use pressure point. - anon

Try your left hand first. Find the area at the base of your ring finger and little finger on your left hand, just below your knuckle bones, palm side of your hand. Then, with your right hand thumb and index finger, kind of pinch or firmly press that area. You might feel a little tenderness in that spot. Press for a few minutes. Sometimes you can immediately notice the tinnitus going down. I've found it to work, especially when in a quiet place, needing to relax. Hope it helps...
Thanks! - nm

Does anyone else suffer from tinnitus? Mine is a high-pitched, constant noise in my ears.  It is worse in my left ear than my right.  Some days it isn't that bad, but some days (like today) it is very loud and is driving me nuts! I have an aunt who has Meniere's disease, and have heard that can run in families, but I do not have the associated vertigo that Meniere's has, just the constant noise. If you have tinnitus, what have you found that helps?  I'm sure ...

Tinnitus After DC'ing CaffeineMay 11, 2016
I've been trying to eat healthier and am feeling a little better. I have been "tapering" so to speak off caffeine. The tinnitus started a couple of days after decreasing my daily amount. I have not had any caffeine at all in the past two days and the tinnitus today is so loud I have had to stop working. Has anyone else experienced this? I tried to call my doctor's office to make an appointment, but I couldn't hear them. I am going in the morning to see if I can get ...

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke warned Wednesday that Americans may have to accept higher taxes or changes in cherished entitlements such as Medicare and Social Security if the nation is to avoid staggering budget deficits that threaten to choke off economic growth. "These choices are difficult, and it always seems easier to put them off -- until the day they cannot be put off anymore," Bernanke said in a speech. "But unless we as a nation demonstrate a strong commitment to fiscal re ...
