My cat has been sneezing a lot and she sounds like

she has a stuff nose and mucus in her nose. Do cats get colds? Is there something I can do to clear her nose and help her breathe easier? She does seem sick otherwise, although she doesn't seem to be eating as much, but she is still eating and drinking and she hasn't been playing with the dog as much as she usually does.

My cats have that too - friend recommended Viralys from Drs. Foster and Smith - online - she said hers all cleared up - so I got some - just been giving it to them a couple days - no change yet - but something to look into I guess.

Cats can get colds/allergies and the colds can become serious if not treated, especially if it's an indoor/outdoor cat. Not eating is never a good thing, I'd call the vet.

If possible, please take her to a vet. Yes, cats do get upper respiratory infections. One type my cat had is highly contagious to other cats. He was quarantined/treated for 2 weeks at the Humane Society before released for adoption. My previous cat had a nasal tumor removed. His symptoms were runny nose, decreased appetite, sneezing. Not trying to scare you by saying your cat has any of the above, just want to make you aware of some stuff that is possible. I hope she feels better soon.

My cat does that a lot, but she's an extreme-faced - Persian with stenotic nares. (sm)

I think she also has a bit of an allergy, too, as she seems to always have itchy skin.

Cats can and do catch colds. It's not good when they don't want to eat, which is probably because with the stuffy nose, they can't smell their food. One trick to try is feeding her favorite canned food (the stinkier, the better!) that's been warmed slightly in the microwave. (Be sure to test, to be sure it's not hot.) That might help to perk up her appetite.

I had an exotic shorthair cat (persian w/o the long hair). He always got sneezy and stuffy. A great tidbit of advice the vet gave me was this; when a cat is having true difficulties breathing they do what people do and stomach breathe. They use the tummy mucles instead of the dia. to breathe and this makes a very wheezy noise and the tummy will move like it is pushing with great force to get the air. Also if the cat is breathing with it's mouth open then it might not hurt to have her checked. She may have bronchitis or upper resp. infection. Even indoor, normal faced cats get these. They are treated with penc. and a steroid shot. Painless to both involved. Will make you feel better though, it always did me.

has little coughing fits. At first I thought it was allergies (and probably is, to a certain degree - plus I don't dust very often!) But sometimes I think she "swallows down the wrong pipe", (like I do all too often), and then coughs. Like you described, she uses her stomach muscles to breathe. She's a good eater, but still it's hard to keep weight on her. (She's between 6 and 6.5 lbs., though she's also very small). I worry that she's burning up all her calories just working to breathe!

I LOVE my Exotic! Best, sweetest, and friendliest cat I've ever known. I got her as a rescue - she was dumped in the shelter by her original family, who got foreclosed on, and for whatever reason chose not to take her with them. Their loss, MY gain! ;)
