How do you pick a dentist

Posted: Apr 4, 2013

I'm the one who wrote a message below asking if teeth shift.  I'm now at the point where I have no choice.  Part of my filling fell out of the broken tooth and I'm starting to feel it, along with aching.  On top of that I started panicking when I saw part of the filling fall out and was looking at all my teeth and notice I have another tooth on the other side that is broken.   The main one I am concerned about is on the right top and the second broken is on the bottom left.  I believe the bottom one will be able to be fixed, but the top one needs to be removed and I will get a partial.

Now...long story short, how do you pick a dentist.  I'm going through that dread feeling of having to go.  I received a coupon in a flier that that says this place does extractions, implants, etc, and they also offer sedation.  They also offer a courtesy discount for people who have no insurance.  Those are all a plus to me.  But unsure if I should be going to a dentist based on some flier I got in a mail.  I went to their website to read reviews and I'm not quite sure about that.  Every review was good, but it seems as though someone wrote a review every day (i.e. 3/26, 27, 28, 29, 30 & 31).  Is that possible that that many customers are writing reviews every day or do you think it's their own office writing the reviews to make them look good)  LOL  I just thought it was odd to have a review written every day.

I'm totally panicked, but have no choice.  I was also thinking that maybe I'd get the tooth pulled, but go back for a partial towards the end of the year when more funds will be available.

What do you all think?

When you do make an appointment, don't be embarrassed to tell them that you are extra nervous (you are not alone in that!). Most dentists understand that and will work with you. If they don't then find another dentist! I had not been to a dentist in 7 or 8 years, and when I did go, I had some work that needed done. I was so nervous when I went for my first filling in quite some time that I thought my knees were going to buckle walking back to the chair! I told my dentist and he was very understanding. Now I don't have a problem, and I actually LOVE going to get my teeth cleaned!

I'm in the process of having extensive dental work. My private dentist suggested that I go to the university dental school, since even with dental insurance, the cost would be prohibitive in a private office. I'm happy with the care, and am treated by a second year post-grad. I was worried about seeing a student, but that isn't the case. They also have the latest equipment - which many private dentists do not.

Hang in there!

Seems like it's been so long since I wrote this message not sure anyone will read it, but I finally did it. I broke down and made myself an appointment. I go next week.

She was so so nice. I talked to my DH about the dental school idea. He didn't like it, plus we didn't see any near where we live. I did find a place on the internet not far from where we live and the offer sedation. I was so nervous talking to her think I about started crying telling her of my extreme fear. She was so comforting and understood totally. I felt so much better after I made the appointment. Especially since I'm in pain. Will keep you informed as to how it goes.
Good for you - anon

Just stay focused on the future. In a few days it will be over and you will be pain free, and you'll probably wind up feeling silly at being so nervous. Maybe it will be a good enough experience that you'll agree to routine followup and never have to go through this trauma again.

Doctors scare me more than dentists. A dentist will Never give you a diagnosis of something terminal like a doctor can!
I went to my appoint and loving my new dentist and eveyrone there - Dentalphobia

I went today and I no longer have a fear of the dentist. This place was so great. The office manager was so nice. Halfway through the appointment she came in to see how I was doing. The dental assistant was very very gentle, and the dentist is a very nice and very upbeat. It's a husband and wife team. Everything about this was great.

The best news is 1 - I don't need deep cleaning and root planing like the other place said I did. He said a regular cleaning will do. 2. - I don't need an implant. I will need a root canal and they will build up the tooth, and put a crown on it so it can be saved. 3 - I don't need a root canal for the other tooth the other place said I did, but is getting a crown and last but not least - they will make sure I'm drugged up enough that I won't care. LOL So I can't tell you how happy I am. Going to take care of the first 2 teeth that have to be done as soon as possible and put off the rest until I can afford it, but I can't tell you how happy I am that I no longer have a fear of going and even knowing I have an upcoming root canal doesn't scare me. I will from now on make sure I go for regular appointments and not wait another 15 years.

Thanks to all for your encouragement and suggestions.
I'm proud of you! Good for you! NM - anon

What a disgusting excuse of a man.  This is the 2nd time he has killed big game illegally and claimed he did not know  he did.  How about luring him with a piece of meat, shooting him and then hunting him for 40 hours, and then finallly killing hiim?  He should be in hiding, which he is.  Got caught in 2006 and was punished with a 1 year probation and a $3000 fine.  Guess he thinks he is above the law.  Really?  Going to shoot a protected l ...

Strange Dentist GiftJul 21, 2010
So-- I'm in the dentist's chair all afternoon, having $2000 worth of work done. At the end, he asks me what kind of milkshake I would like from the restaurant chain down the street. I say no thanks. He says, Please, my treat, I insist! How could anyone say no! So I say vanilla. And he sends his assistant, who brings me back a giant chocolate milkshake. Which is the last thing I feel like eating, but I take it, to be polite. And give it to a family member. Who wants something frozen tou ...

With the news today that Biden is "benched" from the campaign trail and Hillary declined to run for VP, I wonder who's in the running to replace Biden, should it come to that. and stick to it.  For months I read here how essential it was to pass health care reform, Obamacare was right, had to happen, because the uninsured do not receive medical care.  Had to happen.  Okay, in muted form, it passed.  Then states sued because they feel it is unconstitutional for the federal government to require citizens to buy health insurance.  The Obama admin defends the suit on this basis: When accidents or illnesses inevitably occur, the uninsured still re ...
