U2 concert

Posted: Jun 29, 2015

Went to Chicago to see U2 last night. It was a sell-out crowd.  What a great group of musicians.  Had tickets to their 360 tour over 4 years ago but unable to attend as our home burned to ground and we lost our tickets.  Was really excited about going.  Enjoyed the music tremendously.  Unfortunately, the man in front of me chose to stand for the entire concert.  Quite a large man to say the least.  I politely leaned forward about 30-45 minutes into the show and said, "excuse me, would you be so kind as to sit down so  that I could see."  To which, he replied "f*&^ you."  Okay.  Every time I took the binoculars out to look he put his big fat head in the way.  It's too bad that some people do not have manners anymore.  They only care for themselves.

good thing I didn't have any thing to hit him with me because from that point he and the people he was with made comments to us.  I didn't acknowledge them.  You just can't legislate stupidity.

I ended up looking at this blockhead's back and ass for 90% of the show.  Hoping this morning when he sobered up, he had a tremendous headache and he got/gets the kind of day he deserves.

If's just dsiappointing that you pay good money and somebody takes away your right to see the show.

I don't think I will be going to anymore concerts.

He stated to my fiance and me, "I have a right to stand up. I paid my money."

I just smiled. Guess I don't have any rights. Flawed thinking for sure.

Concerts` - LinK

Unfortunately, I go to a lot of concerts, usually 4 or more a year and this is nothing new. Almost everyone stands during concerts, me included. But if someone told me to sit down so the other person could see, I would comply and not be rude about it. I'm sorry you didn't have a good concert experience, but that you at least were able to enjoy U2's music.

Someday, at a future event somewhere, he'll do - that to the wrong person and end up - sm

getting shot. At least in a perfect world, he will!

These kind of people never do - anony

At least that has been my experience.

Just be happy I wasn't with you. I would have - been arrested.

You have more patients than I do, anonia. You were kind and respectful when you asked him to please sit down so you could see. What an a-hole he is! And the people he was with. They must enjoy bullying people. With my temper, I would have ended up getting into a shouting match with him, and one or both of us would have ended in jail. People like that are disgusting. I'm sorry you had to endure that, after you had looked so forward to it and paid big bucks.

My typos! - patients vs. patience

Oops! Guess I'm too used to typing "patients" all day. I meant to say that you have more "patience" than I do.

You Did the Smart Thing - see msg

You did the smart thing and not "road rage" this event. You just don't know what person's reaction would be.

People who blow their top when a stranger is being a you-know-what are not behaving in an intelligent manner---I'm taking about the guy, too. For all he knew, you were a raving psycho, so he was acting in a stupid manner.

So, kudos to you for being smart. As long as I'm here, I hate concerts. Love music, but can't stand the crowds and nonsense such as you are referring to. I just plug in my head phones in my house and bop away.

And why do people have to stand when they have a seat? If everyone stayed seated, nobody would have to stand---stay seated and do a chair dance!

You're right. I think if someone wants to stand, - they should get up, climb the stairs to the very t

and do their standing up there. Or else buy tickets down in the mosh pit.

I always buy the crappy seats - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
After years of wasting money on good seats and not being able to see, I now buy the cheap seats way in back. It is the same music no matter where you sit.
Sometimes the cheap seats turn out to be good! - One time I went to a Stones concert - sm

in Oakland and was sitting up in the nosebleed section at the top of the stadium, with a cold wind coming in off the bay. There were long metal catwalks off each side of the stage below that came all the way up into the top parts of the stadium, and Mick Jagger would run up the catwalks and be right in front of us!

You are - supposed to stand up at a rock concert.

[ In Reply To ..]
The bands would be horrified if the whole crowd sat down.

Does NOT excuse the concert goers bad treatment of you.

I would never sit down unless I was standing in front of someone in a wheelchair.

I've never been to a concert where people sat down, any genre of music.

Odd.

Then Why Are There Seats? - see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
Then why are there seats, if everyone is supposed to stand? Why not just something to lean back on? If I purchase a "seat" it's because I want to sit.

Thank you - anon

I cannot stand for 3 or more hours due to health issues. So some would say I should stay home to allow others to be rude? Sorry but I have a right to sit and be able to see as much as he has a right to stand. There was no compromie in this situation, just his ignorance and foul language. Hoow gets the kind of days he deserves.

There are seats for the boring people who don't want to dance... - nm

Well, then - see msg

They should have 2 sections; one for us boring people who like to sit, and one for those who like to stand and dance and don't care if they have a chair or not.

Some people including myself - Agree

can't stand for any length of time because of back pain. I can't believe the ignorance of people. Proved himself to be a real man . . .

Really? - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
I guess I did not see that find print stating so on my ticket. Have to be more careful about that.

Believe it or not, I have been to concerts in the last year or so where people did sit. No one person is any more important than another.

HMMM - anon

Never noticed ths small print on my ticket stating that you must stand at all rock concerts. Need to pay more attention to the small print

Standing not saying it's right - LinK

[ In Reply To ..]
Definitely not saying it's right to stand, especially if someone tells you to sit down, but I have never been to a concert where people sit. Yes, they sit every once and a while, but usually if it's a rock type concert people stand for most of the show. There are people few and far between that actually sit at those types of concerts. I guess it depends on the artist. Again, not saying it's right and even though I stand at all concerts for the majority of the time, if someone said please sit down we can't see, I would oblige. There's no need to be rude to someone asking out of common courtesy. I guess that's why I like to try and get as close to the front of the stage as possible.

I'm 5'1" and often have to stand and dance at rock concerts. sm - Still rockin'

Lucky you...you got to see U2!!! How awesome is that.

However, I must say I do stand at most rock concerts mostly because I cannot see even sitting, but many times because rows in front of me are standing. That guy was wrong in his response. He could have just not answered you or said he was sorry. Swearing at you is wrong. Another problem (since you said he was big), most concert seating is really tight and most BIG people cannot even fit in them.

Getting back to the standing. Yes, you paid for your ticket just like those who are standing did. I don't think there is a right and wrong, but if you are at a rock concert, expect a lot of people to be standing and dancing in front of their seats. I cannot sit while my favorite bands are playing.

Also, most bands expect you to stand, particularly if you have floor seats. You will often see them urging people to stand and clap and sing along and get into it. It usually makes the band play even better and sometimes longer.

We recently saw John Fogerty and it was a great crowd and he put on a fantastic show, and he is 70! Yes, I stood for most of the show, as did most of the folks on the floor, and at the end of the show, he thanked the whole audience for being so enthusiastic. Said it meant a lot to him.

You also usually have those huge monitor screens you can watch, which is what I have to do when my seats are not so great and lots of folks are standing. I'm sure U2 must have had those screens, no?

My gripe at concerts is the constant drinking, people walking in and out of aisles, spilling their drinks. It is disgusting. I want to watch the show and it spoils the show. If you want to drink that much, go to a bar. LOL.

p.s. I've only been asked to sit once at all the concerts we go to (and we are fortunate to go to quite a few) and I did grumble and sit down, but it ruined the rest of the night for me. But, again, I am short, so I really am not much of an obstacle to see by. So, it works both ways. Now, I try to get floor tickets up close where the fun and the action is and 99% of the fans are standing down there on the floor.

As Bob Seger says:

So you're a little bit older and a lot less bolder
Than you used to be
So you used to shake 'em down
But now you stop and think about your dignity
So now sweet sixteens turned thirty-one
You get to feelin' weary when the work days done
Well all you got to do is get up and into your kicks
If you're in a fix
Come back baby
Rock and roll never forgets

Going To A Concert...Feb 19, 2017
...and if people in front of me stand up to dance, wave their arms, or whatever, I'm going to spit. The reason for tiered seating is so that everyone can see the stage. If my view is someone's butt, I'm going to ask for my money back, which is no small change. If you're one of "those" please don't do it tonight, LOL. ...
