is people are coming up with all kinds of different answers.  Most of them are 2 and 288.  What do you think the answer is:  48÷2(9+3) = ?

;

2 - my answer

288 - Jewel

I just recently took a math course. If you follow the order of operations you get 288.

Yep. 288 is correct. I wonder how some got 2? - nm

You have to calculate the second part first. Formula: 48÷2(9+3)=

48 divided by 2 times 9+3
First you add 9+3 (12)
Multiply that by 2 = 24
Now you have 48 divided by 24 = 2

Unless what I was taught in elementary school was wrong.
Disagree all you want. 288 is correct. You are what - sm

It's an issue of education, and what I was taught was the correct way to calculate the mathematic equation. What's lacking is a math symbol before the (. That said ...

And if you're a fan of Dr. Phil ...
I am no fan of Dr. Phil and the implied - math symbol is x or *

It doesn't matter whether or not you admit it, you are still wrong.

Can't admit what I don't see (BTW, go to the end of all the posts for this subject and read the link I posted) ...

But what I will admit, 'cause I see it clearly, is that you need an attitude adjustment.

I can Google, too. Way to pick out the one that sorta kinda says that you might be right. :)

Yes, 288. 48 db 2 = 24. 9+3=12. 12x24=288. nm - VTMT

48÷2(9+3)
48 ÷ 2(9+3)
48 ÷ 2(12)
48 ÷ 24 = 2

Per algebra rules, you solve the parentheses side first. Parentheses equal multiplication, and since the 2 is still part of the parentheses after the 3 and the 9 are added, 2 and 12 must be multiplied BEFORE the divsion function is performed.

confusing, but I also get 288, if the directions are correct. - alias

48÷2(9+3)
48 ÷ 2(9+3)
48 ÷ 2(12)
48 ÷ 24 = 2

order of functions:
(DO NOT DIVIDE 48 by 2 FIRST. 2 is part of the parentheses which is to be solved first)

first step: 9 + 3 = 12
second step: 2 x 12 = 24
third step: 48 ÷ 12 = 2
Ah yes. I see now. Forgot my algebra. nm - VTMT

n
2 is not part of the parentheses. You would only - Aced Calc III
[ In Reply To ..]
solve that first if it was written:

48÷[2(9+3)]

This could just as easily be written:

48÷2 x (9+3)

and it would say the same thing.
Or you could change the ÷2 to x 1/2, which means - the same thing and work it either way.
[ In Reply To ..]
You are assuming that 48 is over the entire equation 2(9+3) which is not what the original question actually says.

48 x 1/2 x (9+3)=
24 x 12 or 48 x 6, either way, it =288.

Wrong. You read left to right so 288 - nm

2 is correct. Mathematical expressions are evaluated in a particular order, or PEMDAS for short

1. Parentheses
2. Exponents
3. Multiplication
4. Division
5. Addition
6. Subtraction

Therefore it would be evaluated in this order:

P: 9+3 = 12
M: 12*2 = 24
D: 48/24 = 2

The correct answer is 2. :)

No. Do you read right to left? No you read left to right - nm

n

No...not in mathematics you don't - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
It is based on type of expression. Right to left / left to right doesn't matter except with regard to multiplication & division and then addition & subtraction.

(I was a math major. Care to try again?)

Here - check this out.
Yep. It is 288. Math major or not, you are wrong - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
do YOU care to try again? LOL!! It specifies the correct answer is 288.
The best way to make sure - you get this right is to
[ In Reply To ..]
replace the (9+3) with y, work it that way and then insert 9+3, so:

y=9+3

48/2(y)=24(y)
24(y)=24(9+3)
24(9+3)=24(12)
24(12)=288
you are incorrect - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Again, parentheses have to be solved first, and anything attached to the parentheses are included in its solution.

48 ÷ 2(9+3)
48 ÷ 2(y)
48 ÷ 2y

y = 9+3
y = 12
2y = 24
48 ÷ 24 = 2

Oh, my goodness, I needed this...had to test my co-workers - Angie
[ In Reply To ..]
Correct answer is 2...asked a math "nerd" at work. PEMDAS is correct.
You guys are wrong. The answer is - 288
[ In Reply To ..]
It is not 2, no matter how badly you and your coworkers would like it to be.
Exactly what I have been trying to say. They are - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
definitely right fighters. They cannot stand to be wrong. Sad!!

You handle the term with parentheses first, which is 2(9+3) - or 24, and then divide 48 by that. Answer is 2.
