I saw the story on Yahoo a little bit ago. Mom and Dad charged with shoplifting $5.00 worth of sandwiches and their 3 year old child taken into custody for 18 hours while they were charged, booked, etc. They got a couple of chicken salad sandwiches and ate them while shopping, saving the wrappers to scan. However, they forgot to have the papers scanned when they paid for rest of groceries.
I certainly think this could have been handled better.
I see people all the time filling their bags with cherries/grapes/nuts or mixes that you bag up and pay by the pound and they wander through the store eating them without thinking a thing about it. First thing, yuck... no washing the produce and how many people have handled it before you bag it. Second, they are deliberately stealing IMO. Of course, there is no way they could possibly have what they ate weighed at the checkout and they damn well know it. Those people are the deliberate thieves not accidental like it sounds like those parents were with the sandwiches. Had they thrown the wrappers away or hid them I would suspect they were guilty of trying to steal, but sounds like it was an honest mistake.
