Does this ever happen to any of you? It happens to me far too often. Tonight it was fish, which I rarely buy because it's so expensive!
I'm in the frozen food aisle, and Gorton's frozen fish fillets (all types) are on sale. Normally $8.99, and tonight the sign said that with your Club Card, it was only $4.99. "Good deal", I thought, so I bought a box of frozen breaded tilapia.
As usual, (which I sometimes think they're trained to do), I'm not able to watch every item as it rings up, because the questions are coming nonstop from the boxboy: "Paper or plastic?" "Do you want this item -(which is already in a bag... duuhhh!)- in a bag?" "Do you want help out to your car?" (With only 10 items? Do I really look that feeble?) Also from the cashier: "Run your club card through again". "Put that -(a heavy box of cat litter, of which I bought two)- back in the cart, and I'll just ring this one up twice." I then insert my debit card, and enter my pin#. (The CORRECT pin, I might add.) And the machine first rejects it and says I've entered the wrong pin #, so while the cashier is ringing up the remainder of my stuff, of course my attention is now 100% on re-entering the debit card info.
Usually what happens is that I get home to find one or two items (usually small, often cosmetics) never made it into my grocery bag. This time, when I get home I discover that although the sign in the frozen fish shelf clearly said "Gorton's Tilapia - usually $8.99 - only $4.99 with club card", it's been rung up at the cashier for the full $8.99. I'm in the mood for a good fight, so will probably go back on Thursday, when I was planning on doing my full shopping list, and will of course bring my receipt from tonight and call them out on their "oversight".
I truly don't believe these are "oversights". If it happened once in a while, maybe. But I think this problem is widespread, and not just at the supermarket, but everywhere. I've gone to places like Target or Walmart, and the price that rang up was not the sale price that was either advertised, or had a sign for in the store, or worse yet - that the item was actually marked with. I think it's just a way to make an extra little profit for themselves. I'd sure like to see these stores taken to task for cheating their customers like that, especially during these hard times.
