Pros and Cons of MT...
Posted: Feb 11, 2014
Just curious if any of my pros/cons match anyone else's. Been making a list (and checking it twice LOL) to help me decide if I should leave MT for good for a non-MT paid hourly job (entry level).
PROS:
Work in my pajamas - no makeup, clothes, etc expenses
Tank of gas lasts a month - cheaper insurance (older car so no payments)
Inside my warm house during winter (WI is freezing!)
Home with my dog
Home for deliveries
Catch up on bills, cleaning, laundry, etc during NJA
Flex time or switch with another MT when I need a day off for appts
Health insurance
Some tax breaks for WAH
CONS:
Paid production only. Never paid over certain CPL. Ever. Only way to make more money is more production. QA or production? Pick one!
QA audits
NJA = no pay
Have to make up time/work if NJA/power failure/Internet down, etc
Alone
Bored
VR garbage
No straight typing
MTSO's in general
MT career going into the crapper
No job security (after 2014, who knows?)
Paychecks never the same amount, too low
Not paid for spaces (VBC only)
Not paid for headers/subheaders, demos, researching, other duties on top of MT
Constantly getting new accounts added to your pool
More account instructions (not a universal system)
Platform upgrades/failures/locking up computer
Working every weekend
Working every holiday
NJA means no $$ for vacation/trips/fun with family
OT means no time for vacation/trips/fun with family
Having to ask off months in advance for holidays yet AM's put themselves off already in January!
Having to cut your spending habits in half
That's all I can think of right now, anyone got anything to add to the list?;

Look how much longer the "cons" list is. That's confirmation right there that you're ready to start a new chapter in your life. If you have the opportunity to make a move to something different, a new career, I say go for it. That's what I did a few years ago. When I could no longer support myself by working as a full-time MT, I cut down to part-time MT work and entered the public sector doing something totally different. It was the best career move I ever made. I still work part-time as an MT to supplement my full time paycheck. It's the perfect scenario for me. I don't foresee that I'll ever be able to make ends meet with just one job.
Good luck to you!
Listed NJA a lot, I noticed - sm

You could study for a new career during the NJA, then make some decent money, hmm?
Others have done it.
No thank you... - Anyone?

I already wasted 2-3 years in school to become an MT and it was a big waste of my time and money, and the worst 6 years of my life being an MT. I've thought about going back to school for another field but after another 2-3 years of school full-time that I'd have to pay for myself as I don't qualify for any help and then waste more time and money to be in my 40s starting a new career and possibly getting burned after 6 years like I did in MT, um no thanks. I'm thinking of going into a new non-MT job. Nothing to do with healthcare at all. I just don't have it in me to do that again.

For those of you getting out, what are your plans? I hear a lot of people saying they are getting out but not much beyond that except working at McDonald's or Wal-Mart. I don't work at home and never have, I've done MT for over 30 years. My employer's been outsourcing and I have been doing the QA but found out today that we're getting more transcription to do on site because of poor quality and slow turnaround. I thought I was done with MT but for me that seems to be where the work is. I understand all of your "cons" except for headers, demos, researching, etc. Those things have always been an MTs job even though not spelled out in the job description, I never got paid for them when I was on production pay either. You complain when you don't have work and you complain when you are asked to work OT, there must be some middle ground there. Sorry you are alone and bored, that is why I never wanted to work at home. I wouldn't bat an eye about taking a job that pays hourly and gets me out of the house, but that's just my opinion.
I got out of MT - sm

Your PRO list:
PROS:
Work in my pajamas - no makeup, clothes, etc expenses------I actually found that I feel MUCH better now that I get to wear new clothes and look better.
Tank of gas lasts a month - cheaper insurance (older car so no payments)-----got a job close to home, still minimal gas.
Inside my warm house during winter (WI is freezing!)----office job, I'm warm too:)
Home with my dog-----Yea, miss my pups.
Home for deliveries----That's okay, can swing by post office to pick them up.
Catch up on bills, cleaning, laundry, etc during NJA-----I used to stress too much during NJA to get anything done anyway.
Flex time or switch with another MT when I need a day off for appts----Got a state job...get 3 weeks of PTO yearly plus 3 weeks of sick time, plus can flex my schedule.
Health insurance---got that too.
Some tax breaks for WAH---Haven't been there long enough to see taxes change.
If I had it do do all over again - Ms. Weeza

I made that pros and cons list about 5 years ago, decided to go for it and took an entry level position for a new doctor in town as the "gal Friday", you know, the do it all. It was a piece of cake and my co-workers were amazing! What was uncomfortable was the tension between the manager and myself. I, like many here, am an older gal that has been in the MT and/or medical office field for DECADES! The mngr is a 27-year old gal who seemed really put off my the older gals with experience. But, importantly, she made a lot of mistakes. I NEVER stepped on toes, but if she asked for ideas/help/direction, those of us with experience would give it, readily and happily!
Long story short. Myself and the only other 50+ y/o woman were fired... Their reason: Our company is headed in a new direction and we feel it would be best if we separated." (employee at will)
I have applied and applied and applied for MT positions, but lately it seems that their new requirement is 5 years of RECENT in-house acute care experience. I was home based...
Now this is going on month #5 of unemployment and nothing seems to be coming my way.
My suggestion would be to look carefully into the stability of your prospective new employee and reconsider what you have. This no job stuff is lower than low. I'd rather have the occasional No Jobs Available anytime...
Good luck, however you decide.

Pros And Cons On Medical Marijuana???Jun 08, 2012Well here in California, we have passed a prop that OK's the sale of marijuana in pot shops, although it restricts exactly what areas they can run these businesses. Such as they must be at least 1 mile from schools and churches. Other restrictions too. But evidently the people of California do not want to make medical marijuana illegal. So they are still in business.
In my opinion, selling marijuana is beneficial for patients with chronic conditions, such as ...

Compassionate Cons Forgot Vets In 11th HourOct 07, 2013before they shut the government down. VA staff has been scraping the bottom of the barrel since Oct 1 to pay rehab, educational, disability, retirement, survivors and family benefits from dwindling funds. If the shutdown goes on past mid October, those benefits for November will be suspended. Meanwhile, 7000 more VA furloughs just made things a little harder for them.

Cons Cluelessness On Full Display As Cruz Continues Rabid CrusadeOct 11, 2013in direct defiance of Koch Brothers' cease and desist decree. Governor Christie, the only potential presidential GOP contender so far demnostrating a slight hint of bipartisan appeal that could portend a viable candidacy, was notably snubbed as persona non grata by fervent zealots who declined to invite him.
