Parking - What would you do?

Posted: Aug 9, 2017

I rent a townhouse apartment in a small complex, 6 units total.  Each of us are assigned 2 numbered parking spots, with 2 or 3 unnumbered for guests.  One of my neighbors has 2 full-sized pickups and a work pickup.  His wife is a coder who works at home so only one of the personal vehicles gets driven.  In addition to their 2 assigned spots, he has a work truck that he parks in one of the guest spots and leaves it there all the time when he is not at work, even on weekends.  I only have one vehicle, and because there is nowhere else to park, when people come to visit they are helping themselves to one of my numbered spots.  I don't think it is fair that I am paying for someone else to do this, especially since they are not courteous enough to ask if I'm okay with it.  There is other off street parking that Mr. F-150 could use for his work vehicle and free up a spot for guests, but he's claimed it as his own, and that really is the problem.  I'm probably being a jerk about my designated spots, but it just irritates me.  It's not my business but for one thing I don't get why 2 people need 2 big vehicles like that and a third to drive back and forth to work.  I've lived here a little over 2 years and this has been going on pretty much the entire time.  The landlords are out of town for a couple of weeks, but I did drop off a note for them, it's the first time I've said anything.  Many people on MT Stars have similar life experiences, so I thought someone might have some thoughts, thank you.

Neighbor needs to find other parking for one. The 2 parking spots are yours to use at your discretion and your visitors since you have 1 vehicle. I guess the answer would be how well do you want to get along with your neighbors, but the old saying of give them an jnch, they'll take a mile also stands in this case. Owner needs to properly designate those spots as tenant parking only, guest parking only, some sort of sign. We all know people need direction on how to respect what doesn't belong to them and/or abuse a situation. Good luck and I hope your issue gets resolved but works out for you without causing enemies. Keep us posted.

What do regs say about parking a commercial vehicle? - Sorry

[ In Reply To ..]
Does your lease say anything about commercial vehicles being prohibited or anything like that? Would a town or county ordinance apply here? In my neighborhood commercial vehicles can only be present while work is being done, and then they must be parked elsewhere. County employees, for example, must park their vehicles at the county lot. Plumbers and the like who have one small truck can park it on their own property but not on the street out front, etc. This may be something to ask about at City Hall.

I would park at an angle.. - LMT

and take up both my spots unless I am expecting company, then I would straighten my car into one of my spaces and let my visitors use my extra space. Otherwise I would park in both my spaces, if they are next to each other.

I might also put up a sign that says "park here at your own risk. This is an assigned spot for our resident and violators will be towed".

I think this would invite vandalism. - sm

Cars get keyed when they do that. It happened to my friend many times until he finally got a clue.

What I did in your same exact - situation.

I always had unknown cars in my extra spot and was infuriated that it would be occupied when my friends came over. Instead, I offered my extra spot to one of the roommates of my nextdoor neighbor. My neighbor had his own car plus his two roommates each had a car. One was always on the street. When my friends came to visit, I warned them in advance that they would have to use the street if there were no guest spots available or, if possible, I would put my car in the guest spot and let them use my designated spot under the carport. It was a win-win.

Call and have them towed. That should get the - message across.

Or, park in your guest spot and leave your "real" space open.

All good ideas - Dazed and confused

I have actually considered packing so that I take up 2 places. It's straight in so I could occupy half and half. I don't know what the rules are about commercial vehicles, but I know people have been reminded before about their trucks. The neighbors who used my numbered spot tried this when I first moved in and I called them on it then, I guess they thought enough time had passed that I forgot about it. I think it's like one person said, they're trying to take advantage. I don't want to contribute to the problem and escalate the situation, I'm sure the landlord will handle it when he gets back from vacation. I'll report back.

Towing may cause retaliation. - sm

People are whacked out these days. When they find out who had them towed, watch out! As a single woman, I am afraid to do things like that. Better to find someone else to use the space like suggested above. That's a win-win.

My sister has this problem too! She lives with her daughter in a townhouse, 2 assigned spots, and they have two cars. Guest parking is across the street but limited. Folks are constantly parking I their spot. My sister or niece will simply park behind the car in their spot so that the owner has to come ask them to move. It has caused some arguments, but they have lived there almost 7 years so they get their points made quickly to newcomers. Their grouchy neighbor consistently parks diagonally in his two spots. He lives alone and has one car but does not want anyone parking inhis spots! My sister is trying to move to a new place which is a duplex with her own driveway. People can be so clueless. Most times she says that they say, "Oh, I didn't know it was your spot." She points to the sign. Or they say, "I was only here for a few minutes!" And its like 6 hours after she parked!

The parking situation has been resolved. I spoke to 2 of my closest neighbors yesterday and it sounds as if I'm not the only one fed up with the lack of parking. I also found out that someone who lives across the street had been helping himself to one of our available spots, I thought that vehicle belong to another tenant. We had some security issues earlier in the week as well, too much detail to discuss although I suspected drug dealing and too many people living in one place without paying rent, it's a very long story. I would have been gone long ago but we're in the middle of a housing crisis and it's really difficult to find anything else. Three new families moved here earlier in the spring and since then things have gone downhill, we did have really great neighbors. Anyway, the landlord's back in town and judging by how quiet it is now and the number of cars in the parking lot, I'd say that everything has probably been addressed. Thank you to everyone who responded.

Just thought I'd let everyone one know that I found a very close parking lot near by (only a block away from the theater).  Thank you to to those who gave me google advice.  It was $35 for the night.  I should have paid better attention though.  To make al ong story short, I had to move my car because the lot closed at midnight and the concert was just ending at 11:45 so at about 8:00 I moved my car and found that parking is free after 7:30 on the streets.  There wa ...

Have You Ever Been Trying To Exit A Parking Lot By Turning Left And...Dec 04, 2012
there are cars coming at you from the left and they finally clear but then there are cars coming from the right turning into the parking lot and you can't move until THEY clear but once they do, there are now cars coming from the left again and on and on.  This happened to me last night and the jerk behind me actually started honking at me.  What the heck was I suppose to do?  Drive into traffic so he/she could get home sooner?  It's just frustrating and it's ...

Copycat Empties 50 Rounds In Southern CA Mall Parking LotDec 15, 2012
Aside from sheer panic that sent hordes of screaming holiday shoppers running for cover, mall store lockdowns, a police search and investigation, no fatalities or injuries, thank goodness.  The perp was taken into custody and charged with felony assault with a DEADLY weapon.  Again, it was 50 rounds of live ammunition, not 50 knives or 50 Molotov cocktails.  Merry Christmas from the NRA et al.    ...
