PBS Dust Bowl Series -

Posted: Nov 19, 2012

One of the things that struck me was the naivete of the people (especially those not directly affected).  When the dust finally got out east, the solutions offered were to "pave the southwest with asphalt" and send all the old junk cars there for wind barriers.

Around here, we will have a very cold day, and people will smirk and say "Sure wish that global warming would come." (or in summer vice-versa).  Many people do not understand the increase in strength of these tornadoes and hurricanes unless they have experience with them and can note the change.

Apparently the dust bowl was a 10 year event--I still remember some of the changes that were in effect in the early 60's.  My dad would say "that land is in soil conservation."  The government would pay to have people "not farm the land" in order to stabilize the soil.

Off to work I go.  I believe there is another part tonight?

Was when that one farmer said (paraphrasing him) we just kept doing the wrong thing harder, we didn't change anything, just did it harder.

Regarding climate change, I cringe when I hear people refer to global warming on a cold day. It's actually weather extremes that are occurring as a result of climate change.

Ken Burns is amazing.

Prohibition and Baseball were excellent. Baseball is my absolute favorite documentary.

But of course baseball is also my absolute favorite sport :-) !!!

Actually, I'm not sure if "geek" is a strong enough word. I love history of all types, but baseball history is just consuming and unendingly fascinating to me. My MiL bought me the companion book to the Baseball documentary one fine Christmas, and I have just about worn the words off the page.

Burns is a documentary god.

Who are your teams? - grits

I've been a Braves fan since the 80s when they stunk. I like the Mets and White Sox as well, but never really followed them.

I am a Milwaukee Brewers fan and cannot wait until April for the new season to begin. I don't think I missed a game all last year or for several years before that.

Hey, the Braves have turned into a really good team. It's going to be weird watching their games now that Chipper Jones (amazing baseball player) has retired. He was really great!!!
I know! - grits

I remember when he came up and I was all, "IDK about this Jones kid. He don't look like much to me..."

This is why I'm not a talent scout ^__^

your team that you watch lose year after year FINALLY has a great season?!!

I know ALL too well. I'm a Tampa Bay Rays fan (and YAY our Ace Dave Price won Cy Young award). We finally made it to the WS in 2008, but I was not happy when the announcers all but said they couldn't wait for the series to be over because the teams "weren't sexy." We lost, but what a season!

Before TB birthed a team, I was Marlins fan (still am, but Rays are my fav). Their WS was also an awesome experience.

I also like Detroit (former Marlins' manager, Leland, is there now and Miguel Cabrera, who started out in Miami).

These days, you have a team, but it's so disappointing the way players just come and go. That will be a lot of my motivation for rooting for a team... players I know and love!!

I also cheer for the underdog and the low-budget teams. Watching Baltimore not giving up top spots in the division was a thrill (and a threat LOL). Even though they're in the Rays' division, I still was happy they did so well. Washington, another cellar team did very well.

And your Braves!!! They had a magnificent season.

Here's to April!

Congrats to Price!

Oh yes, it's fun to be in on the ground floor, so to speak. It's almost more fun losing than winning - winning kind of takes the fun out of it (I'm a lifelong Saints fan, too, so we're not used to backing winners) :D

I'll always feel so bad for my poor husband. He was a fan even before I was, and he couldn't get off work the night they won the World Series. Even if they win again, it won't be the same.

But hey, here's to April! :)

Same here, about Ken Burns - ZvilleMT

I haven't seen the baseball one (more of a football fan),but Prohibition was really good, as was the Civil War. When I was in college many moons ago, he gave a speech at our campus - there weren't too many there, so he came out to the audience and spoke with us and signed autographs - between him and my history professor, that was what turned me into a history nut:)

I DVR'd the Dust Bowl and didn't have time to watch it today, but hopefully things will slow down over the holidays and I can watch it then. I think the second part is on next Sunday - usually PBS runs documentaries on consecutive weekends.
I was wrong - 2nd part on tonight! (nm) - ZvilleMT

I'm not sure when the next segment airs, they showed the same one back to back (to back) last night on my local PBS station. I'll need to go on line and check the listings. I thought it was interesting. Didn't know that went on for 10 years or what they had done to the land to contribute to that, I guess no one knew about crop rotation in those days. I'm a Ken Burns fan too. I haven't seen Basebsll but Prohibition was really good, there's also on called Jazz that I haven't seen. Enjoy the series, it's nice to see something educational on TV for a change.

On Wisconsin Public TV, the second part is on right now and then will be repeated again at 9 p.m. I searched the WPT website because I did not see the first part, and it is available for viewing on that site.

2nd night really interesting - sm

Goes into the WPA and how government was needed to change things around. Talks a bit about the speculators and land management companies. Touches on migrant workers and shutting the border off to "Okies." A lot that can be applied to what is going on now with this country --with corporations getting breaks and suppressing wages, the value of the local economy, consequences of man-made climate change. I see strong parallel between exploiting crop land, water and oil/natural gas.

Just finished watching - Burns fan

Government regulation is timeless.

There is no "California" if we don't start paying attention to our "Boise City."

Boise City - Anonymous

[ In Reply To ..]
Until this, the only Boise I knew was Boise, Idaho. I wondered if some of the dust bowl refugees moved there and renamed the town. Probably not, but that's how my mind works. There's some interesting information about Boise City, OK on Wikipedia; for one thing, the only US town bombed (accidentally) during WW II. I thought it was interesting on the documentary about the artesian wells, another dust bowl could happen in our lifetime. In regard to government help, these people obviously needed it, and yes FDRs policies had far reaching effects. We're now broke from paying for all those entitlement programs. Without the taxpayers, there is no "government." I was a lifelong Democrat too until I figured out that money doesn't grow on trees.
Social Security program started in 1935 under FDR - sm

Did you see the couple who were in their 80s and still trying to farm? I can't imagine what a hard life they led. Many people now work just as hard, though. I sure am glad there is social security for our elderly and disabled. Do you believe social security is an "entitlement?"

I do when people who made hundreds of thousands of dollars a year throughout their working life are able to draw payments when they retire even though they don't need them, while the middle and lower class retirees have to work in their golden years to make ends meet, it has depleted the fund. I also know that people abuse the system and people also abuse the welfare system. Yes, those are "entitlements." We saw it in the mini series. Even then, farmers were paid not to work.
Just like the oil companies - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
As soon as there was a little profit, they again started digging up all the land. The lessons just don't seem to last. Just like the natural gas fracking. When some major catastrophe happens, they will all be lining up for those entitlements. In the meantime big oil gets big tax credits for what?

ironic how they had to ask government to step in - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
It showed how things got so bad that even people who did not want government help eventually had to ask for governmment help. My grandpa worked in WPA camp and always said he would always be a Democrat because FDR "saved them from starving." My parents became Democrats, and then I did too. The policies of FDR have had far-reaching effects.

We have had major droughts the last few years. This area is more on the order of a desert; all the lakes are man made.

I read a while back there is an area in China undergoing the same dust bowl effect.
