Computer hacking

Posted: Nov 27, 2013

This was important enough to me to want to share with all.  The other day my e-mail was hacked.  A couple of days later a person called and said he was with Microsoft and said he thought I had a virus in my computer and wanted to assist in clearing the virus.  I got suspicous and hung up.  Sure enough I found on Microsoft's website details as to hackers posing as Microsoft reps wanting to hack into people's computers.  I thought by posting as much as I can word will get out throughout the U.S. to be aware of these people.  :(

I had a call from an Indian dude... - who said his name was Kevin

Oooh dude! My name is Kevin (right!). I am from the Microsoft help desk and there is a problem with your computer. Right! I hung up too. Scary to think what they could get up to, isn't it?

Same here, but he didn't say his name was Kevin. I already reported it to FTC.

This has been going on - for quite some time

it is nothing new. check out Snopes, and it is probably in there, as well. you just have to use your common sense and determine what is true or not. you must be vigilante, as they are everywhere!

scares the c**p out of me how they would get - my phone number out of my PC. SM

Even thought it's an unlisted cell number that's very carefully guarded and not given out much, that would still scare the crap out of me because I assume they'd hack into my cell phone bill emails.

Always change your email passwords - me

[ In Reply To ..]
I had the same problem as well. My Yahoo email was hacked and I actually changed my password. I think I will change it every few months from now on. Oh, and if you notice your email looks a little strange, if you get any feeling like it's different, just change your password. When I changed my password, even though I was used to my Yahoo email looking a little different, I suddenly got emails that were sitting around in the "cloud" I guess and I knew I did the right thing.

I do not think they got your phone number - out of your PC

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't think they got your phone number out of your PC. They random dialed numbers until they hit on yours and you answered.

You seem to be assuming that because they called you saying you had computer problems, they had actually been IN your email or computer.

They didn't even know you HAD a computer until you clued them in that you did!

This scam does involve Indians claiming they have information from your computer, but that's the scam...that they HAVE this info, when they are just making stuff up. They did not get your phone number from you or your email ... they probably didn't "get" it at all, but used an autodialer. Those dial random combinations of numbers until one rings through to a real line and someone answers, then THEY pick up. That's the first clue the call is a scam or telemarketer...that there is a big pause before they pick up.

Unfortunately, they now KNOW your number, KNOW you have a computer, and will happily sell that information to telemarketers and scammers. When you start getting MORE calls, don't think it is proof that you have been hacked...it is just that you're on a list now.

The same thing happened to me. There was even a thing on our local news about how people were doing this.

Is there any law against hacking into - curious

[ In Reply To ..]
someone's computer?

of course there is - but you need to be able

[ In Reply To ..]
to prove that it actually was and that some damage was done to you due to it. no organization is going to take the time to investigate simply by someone's "feelings" that someone hacked into their computer. There has to be evidence.

Definition - see msg pls

If you mean hack into someone's computer by using another computer, absolutely. If you just mean sitting at someone else's computer and seeing where they've visited, no. If you mean someone got your password and used it on your computer, not sure.

We need more information. If you're referring to a work computer in an office environment, those are often networked together, so it wouldn't be hard to get into someone else's e-mail.

I meant from another computer outside of my home. What would be considered damage? If someone did nothing to harm me, just read everything googled, etc., is this not against the law? What laws cover these matters?

The above links are pretty informative, thought you might want to read.
Thanks for all the input. Waiting to see if the FTC responds.

What I Think About Computer Viruses: -smJun 08, 2010
In the beginning of the Internet, I think computer worms and viruses were indeed the work of young hackers & geeks without much else to keep them occupied.  But now, I think it's a whole different ball game.  Havine dealt with a few viruses myself in the past few months, and the process of getting rid of them, I've come to believe that the ones cooking up the viruses are the so-called "virus-healing" programs you can buy all over the web for "only $39.95".  How else ...
