BIRDS

Posted: Jun 26, 2015

I have recently noticed that birds seem to be pooping on my patio and outside rug. If I put a bird bath in the corner of the backyard away from the patio, will that keep the birds from coming onto the patio? There is nothing on the patio that would attract them and I cannot understand why they would bother, especially when there are trees in close proximity. Any and all suggestions are all welcome. Thank you.

Depends on the birds and why they are - there.

If there are no bathing facilities on your patio, it is unlikely that birds will forgo your patio for a birdbath.

Where are they roosting over your patio? What are they roosting on? OR, are they just doing fly-by pooping? Is the poop all in one place, or is it random?

Birds typically like to perch where they can see predators. That is not necessarily trees, but wires, roof edges, patio furniture, etc.

They also like to forage for food, like delicious bugs. Is it possible that your patio rug is attracting bugs? Your birds may be doing you a favor by controlling the population, with the inevitable consequences.

Are fruit or berries nearby? That may increase the amount of poop that you notice.

Keep an eye out and see if you can determine what the birds are doing on/over your patio.

As for attracting the birds away from your patio, you could provide water and shelter in a remote corner. They prefer to be able to see predators while drinking, so locate it away from shrubs and trees where predators could lurk, yet near enough that they can flit over into the trees to hide.

Unless the culprits are pigeons making a dreadful mess, there is little reason to harass them off your patio. They need a place to live, too.

There is nothing on the patio to attract them. They are hanging out on the concrete and appearing to do poop fly-bys. There are no berries or fruit trees that I can see. My rug is brand new, just a standard outdoor rug, the lightly padded kind. They appear to be robins and sparrows. Also, I hear some doves from time to time. Yes, I realize they are all part of the food chain, but when there are bird places for them, they should stay there. There are no predators around here.

They Should - Stay

Someone gave you simple advice and asked questions to dialog further. Your response exhibited a lack of knowledge about birds. I would have been happy to supply information that would have helped you understand them better, but your response sounded crabby and rather nasty.

You don't seem to want to coexist with them, but to get rid of them. You seem to think they are conspiring against you. In all likelihood, it is just your focus on your new rug that is making you aware of this. You would never have noticed it otherwise.

FYI, it is a grade-school reading-primer stereotype that birds stay in trees. They live in all kinds of environments, not just trees. Some prefer not to be in trees.

It is also completely untrue that you have no predators. Predator means more than stereotypical reading-primer cats. Your sky is filled with raptors which feed on small birds, your yard with snakes, and no matter where you are, you very likely have coyotes, too.

There was a woman in my building who demanded that someone chop down a tree near her condo and poison the birds that lived in it. Why? Because they sang. People were revolted by that, for good reason. Not only was it illegal, it was animal cruelty. It said something about her state of mind.

Beats me why people can't enjoy the wildlife they have. I would have put a feeder and a bird bowl on my patio rather than a high-maintenance rug.

Your answers to the questions did NOT sound nasty. You were simply answering the questions asked of you. There are some meanies on this board, but we're not all like that. The person who responded to you sounds like a very unhappy person. I wish I had answers to your questions, but I don't know much about birds.
Thank you! - OP

It's funny actually. I could care less about the "precious" rug. LOL. It's not that precious either. Just a cheap one from Walmart. I mentioned it because that is the only thing different out there. My frustration lies with tracking the bird droppings back into the house and not understanding why all of a sudden this is happening. Also, the bully assumes too much. I like birds. I have a humming bird feeder hanging from a tree and enjoy watching them. I also enjoy the different song birds in the area. She does sound unhappy. Thank you for your kindness.

Early Birds?Dec 27, 2013
Just curious if there are any other early birds out there?  I start working around 4 a.m. every day.  I'm more focused in the morning and work better getting an early start.  When I tell people what time of day I start work, they think it's crazy.  I know I'm not the majority, but just curious if there's anyone else on this type of schedule. And good morning! ...

Nixon once said what would prophetically become the mantra of the ultra-neoconservative: "People react to fear, not love; they don't teach that in Sunday School, but it's true." I am typically immune to most of those now-tired party tactics, much like the villagers in the story of the "boy who cried wolf." Instead, I have gone past annoyed with it and now straight to mystified by the never-ending gullibility of other villagers, who know there's no actual wolf, but just seem ...
