children and young adults, my mother taught all of us how to can and preserve food, which has been an invaluable lesson. She grew up during the depression. I learned how to make my own bread (phenomenal and so much better flavor than any store bought). We were taught early on not to waste anything. Those are lessons that have serve me very well.
