Baker's Chocolate - sm Posted: May 3rd, 2021 - 12:57 pm In Reply to: How Costco Is Masking A 14% Price Jump With Shrinkflation - The oldest trick in the retailer book is back.
A few years ago, I went to buy an 8-oz bar of Baker's Unsweetened Chocolate for brownies I was going to bake. I noticed the price for the bar had gone up slightly. However, what I actually picked up was a new 4-OZ bar, which had the same length x width dimensions, but much less height. So not only did Baker's halve the weight of the product to 4 oz, but they then sold it for more than the price of the 8-oz bar, so the price more than doubled. Ever since that happened, I started to buy Hershey's Unsweetened Baking Bar. Hershey's did the same thing with the weight of their product, but the price increase was not as offensive as Baker's.
