I don't see any calls for book burning here. He is suggesting, like my bosses at the library do, that you try reading something outside your usual genre. If - and that may be a big if - you want to know something about the life of a person who doesn't look like you, try reading some books by authors who look like they do rather than books by authors who look like you that claim to understand and explain those lives. Seems pretty reasonable to me.
