I hear/read people saying they have a "right to feel safe" and just shake my head. There's no such thing as a "right to feel safe."

We have no inherent right to "be safe" or "feel safe." Even police, who enforce laws and arguably protect us, have no intrinsic obligation to see that we're "safe." About 15 years ago the Supreme Court ruled that police do not have a duty to protect people from harm.

Hence long before that the adage "When seconds count the police are minutes away."
