The US is a big place and most cannot be tracked down, thus the issue with "Sanctuary Cities." This is a HUGE problem. Officials have tended to rely on employers, etc. to turn them in, but those illegal aliens supply so many employers with cheap labor that they will turn a blind eye to the legality of the situation. There are many who come through the southern border illegally, but most are turned away, caught and/or returned. I believe they do need additional patrols and technology, as many of them say, but it depends on who you ask and what region they cover as to whether or not a wall would be more effective. It's really just a matter of weighing your options so yeah, some say border wall and some say elsewhere. Problem is both sides are right.
