Student suspended for shaping

Posted: Mar 4, 2013

Baltimore, MD (KTNV) -- A student in Baltimore was suspended over breakfast. 7-year-old Josh Welch was eating a Pop-Tart at school. A teacher saw the pastry and said she thought it looked like it was being shaped into a gun. The teacher also said she heard Welch say, "Bang Bang" while he was holding it. That was enough to get him suspended. Welch said his teacher got it completely wrong, "It was already a rectangle and I just kept on biting it and tore off the top, and it kind of looked like a gun but it wasn't." Welch said he was trying to shape the Pop-Tart into a mountain. The school sent out a letter late in the day to parents explaining what happened and why they thought it was a threat saying, "A student used food to make an inappropriate gesture." Welch was suspended for two days. http://www.ktnv.com/news/watercooler/194673111.html;

Do we have to read about it here every time - A teacher does something stupid?

Because I'm not going to argue that there aren't teachers doing dumb things out there. I've experienced plenty of them myself, and I've also been unfairly suspended.

We certainly never called the news about it and plastered my face on TV for everyone to see, thank God. What are these parents thinking, calling the media because a teacher upset their child? Settle it with the school--don't turn your kid into a tool.

No, you don't have to read the post. - Just skip over it.

I won't be offended if you do.

I happen to think the gun control, politically correct mandates being put on schools and teachers is out of control and adversely affecting our kids.

I think our pro-gun culture - is adversely affecting our kids.

a lot more than a few overly sensitive teachers.

this isn't about gun control or politically correct mandates - doe

This is just about a teacher being stupid. Even the 7-year-old child understood that "it kind of looked like a gun but it wasn't." Don't they talk to kids anymore?

This is not about teachers--it's about simple-minded - conservative ZERO-TOLERANCE policies.

[ In Reply To ..]
They swept the nation during this last conservative era, being adopted by school districts as a no-cost/no-nonsense/no-bother/no-responsibility way to deal with trouble in schools, as well as on the streets. It arose from fear and insecurity in the face of change, as well as callousness and a simple-minded notion that simple answers would do the job, and also lessen school district liability. Yes, attorneys and budgets are involved too.

Six-year-old breaks the rules? Suspend him. Sixteen-year-old breaks the rules? Suspend her for so long she'll never be able to catch up on her schoolwork.

The same conservative era created the similar three-strikes-you're-out felony policies. We still have guys picked up for minor theft and drug offences serving their 15 to 75-year sentences. Of course, there was a very heavy dose of bigotry and hatemongering involved.

These stories are just those dreadfully inadequate and counterproductive policies in action, and teachers and principals are "just following orders," I'm sure many of them very reluctantly.

Fortunately, we've finally got to the point where it's not just the left who are outraged at the stupidity. Of course, the outrage is mostly at stories specifically of little white children being victimized, but, hey, anything that works.

Here's another story of - teacher/school overreacting

Conservative Actor: Teacher Threatened Police Action & Questioned My Son’s ‘Mental State’ Over Photo of a BB Gun at School

Actor, entrepreneur, and writer Joseph C. Phillips, best known for his roles as Martin Kendall on “The Cosby Show” and Justus Ward on “General Hospital,” says his son’s school threatened police action after the student showed his friends a picture of his new BB gun. They also reportedly questioned his “mental state.”

Phillips explained for radio host Tony Katz on Saturday that California social studies teacher James DeLarme was walking by when he saw Phillips’ son and his friends looking at the picture. The 15-year-old has been working part time and chose to buy the Airsoft BB gun with his earnings, his dad said, and wanted to show his new purchase to his friends.

The teacher “snatched” the camera out of his hands, and when the teen asked when he would get it back, the teacher reportedly responded: “That’s for the police to decide.”

“It’s just a picture, Tony!” Phillips told the radio host. “There were no threats involved; there was no horseplay, monkey business happening at the time. It was my son’s camera; he shows it to his friends, who are all very interested and excited about it as well. The teacher happens by, snatches the camera, and that’s when the real nonsense began…”

The teacher then allegedly took the camera to another teacher, who said she was “disturbed” by the image. After scrolling through the entire memory and returning the camera, the teachers began to question the “mental state” of Phillips’ son, he said.

“Do you have any animosity towards any of your classmates?” the student was reportedly asked. “Are you happy?”

“Now, this guy…listen, at this point, I’m not sure he’s qualified to teach social studies,” Phillips interjected. “He certainly isn’t qualified to psychoanalyze my kid.”

What’s worse — Phillips says he didn’t find out about the incident until roughly five days later, when his son told him.

When he sent a letter of complaint to the school’s principal, a vice principal allegedly responded in defense of the teachers, saying they did the right thing for the safety of the other students.

Perhaps most alarming, Phillips added, is that “not one person” at the school thought to inform the parents of the altercation.

“If Mr. DeLarme truly believed my son presented a danger, both my wife and I should have been notified immediately!” Phillips pointed out.

Phillips concluded with a word on how “ridiculousness is passing for common sense” in today’s schools, adding that it seems like anyone who has a gun is guilty by default.

“Somebody’s got to have some sense,” he reiterated.

Morning Joe Has Been Suspended For 2 Days From MSNBCNov 21, 2010
because he also contributed to election campaigns. He will be back Wednesday. I almost missed this as it was a teeny tiny paragraph in my local paper on the business news. So I looked and found a couple articles on it.  So far, none of them listed any years, but my local paper stated they were made between 2004-2007. Really, maybe MSNBC should just suspend everyone for 2 days and get it over quick. 'Morning Joe' can sleep in: Scarborough gets 2-day suspension   ...

It's a sad, sad day when kids aren't allowed to play. Really, really getting out of control. Such stupid reactions. The poor kids of today can't have any fun or play any kind of game anymore. No wonder they are always playing video games and/or watching TV. Nothing else for them to do! Then our politicians want kids to play for exercise instead of the video games or TV.  They're trying to ban guns and ammo (2nd Amendment) but won't do a darn thing about VIOLEN ...

US Gvt Caught Massively Fabricating Student Loan Jan 19, 2017
Ever since 2012 we have warned that one of the biggest threats arising from the US student loan bubble - which is no longer disputed by anyone except perhaps members of the outgoing administration - is not that it is soaring at an unprecedented pace, that's obvious for anyone with the latest loan total number over $1.4 trillion, rising at a pace of nearly $100 billion per year, but that the government - either on purpose or due to honest miscalculation - was not correctly accounting for the ...
