Kevin Curtis, ricin suspect, released

So, did the FBI jump the gun because of the Boston bombing? It's being suggested that he's being framed by someone who doesn't like him. The FBI hasn't found a shred of evidence to suggest he sent these letters. So now what? Will they focus on finding the real letter writer/sender, or will they try to "force" guilt/evidence like they did in the Atlanta bomber case?

OXFORD, Miss. — The Mississippi man charged with sending poisoned letters to President Barack Obama, a U.S. senator and a state judge was released from jail on Tuesday, federal official said, though the reason for the release wasn't immediately clear.

Jeff Woodfin, chief deputy with the U.S. Marshals Service in Oxford, Miss., said Paul Kevin Curtis has been released from custody. Woodfin said he doesn't know if there were any conditions on the release.

The development comes hours after officials canceled a detention and preliminary hearing without explaining the reason for the change.

His lawyer Christi McCoy, who has been pushing for the charges to be dropped, said in a text message Tuesday that she could only confirm that her client has been released.

"I can tell you he is with his family," McCoy said.

McCoy has said that there is a news conference scheduled for 5 p.m. CDT with federal authorities and defense attorneys.

Curtis was arrested last Wednesday at his house in Corinth, Miss., and charged with sending ricin-laced letters to Obama, Sen. Roger Wicker and a Lee County, Miss., judge.

Tuesday's hearing in federal court was canceled about 90 minutes after it was supposed to begin. Lawyers spent that time conferring with the judge. Later, Curtis and family members were escorted into a meeting room with his lawyers, followed by a probation officer.

On Monday, FBI Agent Brandon Grant testified that Friday searches of Curtis' vehicle and house in Corinth, Miss., found no ricin, ingredients for the poison, or devices used to make it. A search of Curtis' computers found no evidence he researched making ricin.

He could have been framed, but he also could have gotten rid of the evidence after he finished sending off the letters.

He does seem to have a colorful history, I'll give him that.

...Court records show that Curtis has been arrested four times since 2000 in Prentiss County, where he lived most of the past two decades, and where charges against him have included cyber-harassment.

..."I've been dealing on or off with him, or been made aware of his bizarre behavior, pretty much ever since I became sheriff," said Prentiss County Sheriff Randy M. Tolar, adding that Curtis sometimes lashed out at him in online forums. "He just seemed to be a very paranoid person."

...David Daniels, a former assistant district attorney, said that he got into a confrontation with Curtis around 2004 at an Elvis impersonator festival in Tupelo, Presley birthplace, when Curtis accused him of leering at his ex-wife. After a rehearsal one night, Daniels said that Curtis started beating on the windows of his truck, "screaming and hollering and carrying on."

"I opened the door to see what in the world is going on and he got a long neck beer bottle and started to hit me with it," said Daniels, who eventually pressed charges against Curtis in a case handled by Lee County Justice Court Judge Sadie Holland, who received one of the poison letters last week. "He stood there and raved for a good 15 minutes and then left."

...According to court documents filed Thursday, Curtis' ex-wife reported in 2007 to police in Booneville, Miss., that her husband was "extremely delusional, anti-government, and felt the government was spying on him with drones."

In a Facebook post apparently authored by Curtis around 2 a.m. Wednesday, some 15 hours before his arrest, he wrote that he was on the "hidden front lines of a secret war."

"They destroyed my marriage, they distracted my career, they stalked, they trolled, they came into my home, took my computers, had me arrested 22 times and guess what," he wrote in the post, "I will remain here until Jesus Christ decides it's time for me to go."

all their high-tech equipment. They scrubbed his computer and didn't find any evidence that he looked on the 'net for any info on making ricin.

It does sound like they jumped the gun. There's supposed to be a news conference at 5 p.m. CMT (?? it's in the article) about this.

I'm not saying he did it, because I have no idea. But it would make sense not to use your own computer for something like that. Or even your own home to make poison.

Uh, oh. Harry Reid just confirmed said there was another incident of a letter sent to an Bowling AF base...hmmmm.

"We've had another incident today, I'm told, at Bowling AF base, but I don't know..." said Reid. So, would this letter have been sent while he was in jail? If so, how could he have sent it?

I'm going to look on line and see if I can find anything else.

That just might be his saving grace here. Especially if whoever sent it was dumb enough to use the same initials on the letter, still trying to frame him.
