CA for tax reasons? "They were already a very high tax state and it’s getting to a point where folks have to make a business decision as well as a lifestyle decision.” - John Karaffa, president, ProSport CPA ;

And they are criticized for it - but too bad, CA

Results of your own overtaxation.

I moved out of CA, love the state not the taxation/over regulation - anon

If you can keep a lot more of your hard-earned money, who should criticize you for moving? The pro athletes make REALLY good money, but ONLY for a limited time. But they get taxed at a high rate for the years they are working.

I just simply could not afford the state taxes, but also the high sales tax (our Bay area had extra added on to the base state sales tax), the high cost of car licenses, high cost of gas, high cost of homes/or rent...it isn't just the taxes, EVERYTHING is more expensive, and the unemployment is skyrocketing, especially in the valley.

So where did you move?? - Wondering

[ In Reply To ..]
which state you picked. Seems people from the Bay area move to Washington State, Oregon or Idaho. The southern Californias seem to move to Arizona, Texas, and Nevada.

Can't say I would miss them. - RC

I'm very happy to pay CA rates and obviously make far less than professional athletes...

So yeah, boo hoo!

But now that I think about it, don't they have to live in the area they play for?

I've never really gotten pro sports - Fanatical Hypocrite

I know I'm weird, but I can't say the idea of watching other people play games has ever really appealed to me. I have nothing against sports, I just don't get it. Moreover, I really don't get why they get paid so much. It's one thing to be paid well for entertaining people, it's another to be paid that well.

They get paid that well because they generate - the uberbucks for the

big guys/corporations. And, IMO, the most satisfaction many get out of sports isn't from watching others who posses extraordinay physical talent perform... it's from being a fan which, to many, gives the thumbs up to behave like an idiot, drink and eat in excess, and push aside work/household/family responsibilities for an afternoon because the game is on. It also provides a valid reason (in their minds) to dislike or even fight with other groups for no other reason except they are fill-in-team-name-here fans. There's a reason why beer goes hand and hand with watching the game... to amplify the idiotic behavior... not to sharpen one's eyesight so they don't miss a play.

However, depending on the sport, I do understand the high pay to a point. One good injury could end a career in your 20s... so there is some risk there. What annoys me more are the endorsement deals where the super dooper uberbucks are paid by companies whose products are oftentimes produced by very low paid overseas workers.
I don't know... I don't agree with generalization of - sports fans
[ In Reply To ..]
although I do agree with your rationale for the high pay and the reason the high pay to a point and the endorsement thing.

But I've been a baseball fan for most of my life and definitely don't fit into the mold you have made for us all, and I personally find a little offensive. I'm not sure how you arrived at that conclusion if you don't go to any games, but all sports fans, most sports fans, don't act like that.

Gosh... that description could almost fit people who come to this board!!! ;-)

To answer the other poster's question about players living in the town where they play: They don't play year-round,so they usually have homes in 2 places, the "base," i.e., where their kids go to school, etc., being "home," but sometimes not in their sports/work community.

The financial inequity within any given sport (especially baseball--because no salary caps in BB), does gripe me. For instance, the team I like, the entire roster salary equals the salary for just one player on one of the super rich teams.

But the salaries, on the whole, are generated by the fact that people do like to watch competitive sports.

I've met some amazing people/fans when I attend games in person. And for the most part, never have had experience like you describe, even when we're for different teams.

Please go back and read again. I made sure to add "many" - sm

I have no problem with sports fans. I grew up a baseball fan, and the only reason why I don't watch now is b/c SO dislikes sports. I may have said "some" or "few" if I wasn't on Long Island where MANY of the sports fans fit my description pretty well. Try coming around these parts during the subway series or God forbid when Yanks play Boston.

I didn't mean to offend you or any sports fans... but admit it... you've either been to a game or watched a game and witnessed exactly what I described...lol.
'splains a lot - sports fan

At the stadium I frequent, up until just recently, the opposing team's fans outnumbered ours, so as a rule, a very generally tolerant, friendly bunch ;-)

Yes, rivalries do spark definite emotions, but that's what I love!!! (especially when watching on TV LOL.)

But I wouldn't go as far as to say home obligations are neglected...

The absolute worst crowds, IMO, are collegiate sports. Usually no liquor sold in the stadiums, so they chug a pint of JD in the parking lot (not just the students either) and you have a stadium full of half-loaded maniacs right off the bat, and in college sports EVERY team is a rival!!

Appreciate your response... oh and btw... I could NEVER have an SO that wasn't of my political persuasion or that wouldn't at least tolerate my baseball addiction. ;-)

(hope this thread didn't veer too far off the subject...)

Does this posted quote reek of Fox News exaggereation? - SixteenDollarMuffin

Magic 8 Ball says... Without a doubt.

Anyhow... from what I can see:
1. Phil Mickelson is considering a move.
2. Torii Hunter announced a move to Texas but signed with Detroit.
3. And Tiger Woods moved from California to Florida... IN 1996!!!

So to answer the question in your post "Have you noticed how many - pro athletes are leaving CA for tax reasons," my answer is no, I hadn't. That's because it's not news, rather Fox-generated "news" to get their readers/watchers good and riled up about something. Since you've brought the subject to our attention, I now know the answer is 2 (of which 1 moved in 1996) and 1 considering making a move.

Why did you, like Fox in their little side quote, leave off the rest? - SixteenDollarMuffin

“I think they’ll see some [leave California] for sure. They were already a very high tax state and it’s getting to a point where folks have to make a business decision as well as a lifestyle decision.”

Note the first sentence... particularly the "I think" part. I mean, it's not the typical Fox-style "some would say" intro to a line of garbage, but close enough.

Not really - I read about it from other sources

[ In Reply To ..]
Not everything you disagree with has a source from Fox. I didn't post on this subject, but now the Fox-hate is getting ridiculous.

I don't have cable and when I did I stopped watching it a long time ago, but that's cos I found Hannity and O'Reilly rediculous/preachy, and Hannity just a complete moron.

However, that does not take away the validity of the news stories. Their reporting of stories is right on spot. Unlike MSLSD. I do occasionally read their website and when I cross reference their stories to independent sites, their stories are always correct.

So for all you Fox-haters if you think you are insulting and you somehow think you are more intelligent because you don't watch Fox it's back firing on you and showing how un-informed you are and the laugh is on you. Besides, people who watch Fox News don't take it as an insult. It's always fun to read the hate posts about Fox and insults to other posters if they do watch or read something on Fox. Like watching rabid dogs foaming at the mouth. Especially on something they are wrong about. Fox news talks about issues going on and informs the public? How dare they.

This isn't about "hating" anything. It's another example of a Fox NONnews story - SixteenDollarMuffin

[ In Reply To ..]
Sorry to break the bad news, but there are NOT large numbers of pro athletes leaving CA. If you want to think that's the case and consider yourself informed... that's your deal. Don't know where you read this - and provided the same cut-off quote in the original post (coinkidink?) as Fox had highlighted on the side of their article - and did not notice the link provided right back to Fox or credit given to Fox at the top of the article. It's not news. They interviewed an accountant who gave an opinion supporting their point: Taxing poor rich people is wrong!

They pull stuff like this all the time. And it worked, didn't it? You thought it newsworthy enough to start a thread on here about it.

BTW... and I hope you're sitting down for this.... there is no War on Christmas either.
Sorry to break the bad news to YOU - I read about it from other sources
[ In Reply To ..]
1. Fox NEWS is a valid news source. Don't know how many ways to explain that to people.

2. Yes it is about hating Fox.

3. I never spoke about athletes leaving, I just addressed the Fox-haters who for some insane reason think Fox does not report the news. Sorry to break it to ya, but yes, they do report news. AND on top of that they report a whole story.

4. Yes, Sean Hannity is actually Sean Insanity.

5. Yes, O'Reilly really is the grand inquisitor.

6. Yes, I used to watch Fox, no I don't anymore just because I don't have TV.

7. Yes, when I read a news story on Fox I cross check it to independent sites and sure enough the stories are valid. Wow imagine that!

8. I read about athletes leaving CA. on other various news sites (not Fox NEWS - pssssst, yes real news).

9. War on Christmas? What the heck are you talking about? Why would I need to sit down for that? I don't celebrate Christmas, so maybe there was something I missed. Besides, what does Christmas have to do with the athletes leaving CA?

But hey go ahead people keep hating Fox for reporting the news and somehow believing that news stories are not actually news stories because Fox News reports them. Hope that works out for all of ya.
