The 10 Differences Between Fox News and MSNBC

By Ken Kupchik

Fox News fans defend their network's journalistic integrity by pointing to high ratings and MSNBC as the liberal equivalent. While the comparison may seem valid on the surface, there are glaring differences between the two  networks.

10) Fox News claims "fair and balanced" coverage, while MSNBC is simply "the place for politics."

9) MSNBC devotes a three-hour daily segment to Joe Scarborough, a conservative from Newt Gingrich's "Republican Revolution." The equivalent would be Fox News giving a morning show to Ron Reagan.  (That is the son, not the father.)

8) While Fox News has Bill O'Reilly, MSNBC does not have an angry white male talk show host that yells and frequently interrupts people. Oh wait, nevermind.

7) MSNBC does not air a prime-time show that is akin to watching A Clockwork Orange while taking LSD.

6) The closest Fox News gets to allowing a lesbian to comment on policy is Lindsey Graham.

5) MSNBC will not be the network where Lou Dobbs ultimately ends up.

4) While Fox News was covering several cases of voter registration fraud by community-organizing group ACORN, MSNBC was covering the global economic collapse and a presidential election.

3) The prime-time lineup of MSNBC hosts all have college degrees, while O'Reilly is the only Fox News host to attend for more than one week.

2) MSNBC is not losing advertising because of their biased programming.

1) While MSNBC's Keith Olbermann organized free health clinics across the country to draw attention to the millions of people without health coverage, Fox News organized anti-government tea parties to try and guarantee that those people remained uninsured.

I really hope that you have watched Fox news before posting this and if you are one of those people who haven't but have just "heard" that FOX is biased and put this on here because it was "funny," then I really feel sorry for you. There is nothing "funny" about what is happening to our country right now, and the awesome people at FOX are the only ones who are brave enough to step out and stop being so "politically correct" to tell the truth of what is really happening. As for them reporting on ACORN while the debate, do you even know what ACORN is and who runs it? Check into the company and the Marxist that runs it and you won't wonder why they are reporting on it. No one else has the guts to oust the things FOX does. This country needs to get back to its roots and stop listening to people who think it is "funny" to be liberal- our founding fathers would be ashamed, but not of me.

You are misinformed. I watch Fox frequently but I have missed the brave, awesome people there unfortunately. All I see is a bunch of sneering blow-hards. Could you name the awesome people so I might keep an eye out for one of them?

my liberalism very seriously. I make a point of forcing myself to watch Fox regularly. Granted, it's pure torture, but I do get a laugh out of all the histrionics! More like "fairly unbalanced."

They love to preach they are the most giving and open-minded people, yet they come across as so hateful and stingy for the most part. Never wanting to listen to the other side, always making fun of the other side, and fine about giving away "other people's money", as long as it is not their own money. -so tired of the hypocrites. ROFL. However, if all you liberals ARE REALLY compassionate and REALLY have concern for the unfortunate, then set up a liberal fund and YOU take care of the unfortunate yourselves. You decide where the money goes. Put YOUR money where YOUR mouths are and stop trying to steal from those who worked hard to get where they are so YOU can dole out THEIR money and feel good about YOURSELF. Think how much better you will feel if it is really is YOUR money.
Why don't YOU start emanon, since you are so PROUD of your liberalism. Have Obama but a checkbox on the income tax forms "Check here if you want to donate to the liberal compassion fund for the unfortunate." Let's see how many pony up. LOL.

I have actually watched Fox for as long as my stomach could stand it. No need to feel sorry for me although that it nice of you :) You are correct that there is a lot of bad happening to our country right now, and for the 8 years prior to it. I don't care about being politically correct either. I don't think it is funny to be a Liberal-I am actually quite proud of it, but then, it is just a label, like Marxist, Socialist, Fascist-whatever. Most people who throw those terms around constantly usually do not understand what they mean anyway. They are just repeating what they hear from the "awesome" people at Fox who probably do not understand them either. Whatever. It is just a post and you really should calm down about it.

I'm sick to death of calming down.... - liz

[ In Reply To ..]
...that is what is wrong with everyone. No one gets fired up and does anything about something they feel passionate about. We all sit around and wait for someone else to get it done. I am tired of standing by while people tell me to calm down while our country is being thrown down the crapper. And when you say "most people throwing those terms around constantly usually do not understand what they mean," you do realize that there are just as many people that "throw them around" do actually know what they mean, right? I am actually a Libertarian, but I guess I should go research that and make sure. Since I am throwing that around, I definitely don't know what it means.
Were you so worked up when Bush was President? - Colleen
[ In Reply To ..]
Just curious.
Absolutely! - liz
[ In Reply To ..]
The only good thing that Bush ever did was increased the pay rate for soldiers every year he was in office. Of course I am biased because my husband was in the Army for 8 years, but even after he is out I still believe that the men and women that are sacrificing everything for us should be among the highest paid in the country! Bush was a complete joke, and so was McCain. And don't even get me started on Iraq! As I said, I am not a Democrat or a Republican. I am for the lesser of the 2 evils since no one can seem to make a case as an independent anymore.
I understand what you are saying and I agree on some things. - Colleen
[ In Reply To ..]
I could not stand Bush. I also don't even like to talk about Iraq, then or now because I just get angry. I also think that we do not treat our veterans anywhere near well enough, either at war or when they return home. Having said that, I think Obama does actually have our best interests at heart. I have to remind myself that he inhereted a mess of gargantuan proportions so I need to be patient about seeing improvements. I sometimes think we just got so used to Bush NOT considering all the information or having any intellectual curiousity (unless it was from someone who alread agreed with him) that we get impatient when someone who really wants to make a go of a more diplomatic approach takes his time to try to do it right, so I still have hopes for him. Time will tell. For the record,I consider myself a liberal, but can lean moderate on some issues. I guess I just get tired of posting anything, even the most benign thing and getting these "go-for-the-jugular" type responses and then having the same people acuse ME of being hateful.

Hey, isn't it nice that we agreed on some things? I am proud of us! And not a single insult from either one of us! :)

Although you and I agree frequently (if not all the time). It IS possible to disagree without being disagreeable. The best thing, though, is that ever since I've been reading your posts, it's your HEART that stands out more than anything. I think you've got a great one, and in the end, that's all that really matters! :-)
I agree with you 100% - just me
[ In Reply To ..]
Just because we don't agree with the Obama regime does not mean we were Bush supporters. I cannot remember a president in my lifetime that I voted for because I believed in him, and I certainly am not one of the many who voted for Obama because we are the same race.

As prior military I know what our soldiers are going through each and every day and I agree with you 100% that they should be the highest paid in the country. Anyone who risks their lives and sacrifices everything for a better country should be paid the highest (this includes law enforcement and firefighters). Maybe we should start paying politicians what we pay the soldiers, and pay the soldiers what the politicians get paid.
Sounds good to me. Maybe then between this pay adjustment - Colleen

and some changes in the monies from special interests and lobbiests we would have a shot at finding a government that we call all find at least some trust in and support as a country, if when we don't agree completely.

I couldn't agree more with the points you made in your post.

I'm very grateful for people like your husband and wives and families like yours, who also sacrifice during war time. They truly are the heroes of our country and deserve a LOT more than what they're getting.

You say we're predictable????? I can guarantee you I'll come on here every day and there will be a post from you (or the people in your group) cutting down anyone not in your party and you'll get attaboy's from "the group". Then if anyone doesn't agree with you you'll call us trolls. Looking down the board that's all you're doing. You put up messages that are outright blatant lies and then you don't like it when people post messages saying it's a lie. And you say we're predictable?

I used to watch Fox a lot. In fact, I'd watch MSNBC sometimes, but I would watch Fox more. I thought Bill O'Reilly was the smartest guy in the world.

Then, sometime around the Terri Schiavo case, I realize I had been HAD, and I have stopped watching it, except for when I need a good laugh.

So, yes, I have watched BOTH Fox and MSNBC, and although it took me a while to "catch on," I finally saw through them.

good points - lunarmod

[ In Reply To ..]
MSNBC does lean liberal but they don't invent conspiracies. They admit their errors when they make them. They report the news, not make the news. They don't create straw men. There is an extreme shortage of footage involving gyrating, scantily dressed females to prove that the country is going to heck in a handbasket, but I am okay with that.

They most certainly do not.. - jm

[ In Reply To ..]
I've watched MSNBC for years. They most certainly do NOT admit errors when they make them which is all the time. They do NOT report the news, they report their biased opinion of the news. They spew their hate so blatantly obvious. They hate anyone with a difference of opinion then them and they. MSNBC doesn't just lean liberal, they lean Marxist. Good points? Just another post of hate spew.

Again with the hate. It seems to be your favorite word. (sm) - Nikki

[ In Reply To ..]
MSNBC most certainly DOES admit to their errors. I've seen it happen on more than one occasion. Please provide an example of an error that they didn't correct, along with your source.

Their nighttime programming consists of the "talk" shows (and annoyingly too many "prison" shows), but during the day they report the news, sometimes with guests such as Pat Buchanan, Mr. Conservatism himself.

I'm afraid the "hate spew" is coming from you. I have to wonder if you throw around the "love" word as hastily as you throw around the "hate" word.
why should I provide sources when you don't - that is so funny ha ha ha ha ha - jm
[ In Reply To ..]
So you have your token conservative Pat. One conservative. You must be so proud.

Well I know for a fact they don't correct their errors because I watched them. DH and I sat and looked at the TV after Matthews/Maddow/Olbeman would say something that's an outright lie and they don't correct it. I never once in 5 or so years ever heard them correct themsleves. But at that time I hated Bush so I thought it was okay. I hated Bush so I thought it was okay for Matthews to cut down and yell at his guests, talk over him, and pretty much call anyone who wasn't a liberal an idjit. It was only during the election did they turn me off because even though I hated McCain and was so against him the blatant lies they would spew was so obviously not true. And it didn't stop with the three stooges. It continued on with Shuster, Gregory and a couple others. They may report the news but they report it with their spin on it. Contessa Brewer is a disgrace! You watch their news stories then you switch to another channel and will see the same story, but you get the whole story. MSNBC cuts the stories so that their watchers only get to see what they want them to see. They don't report the whole story or any truth of the stories.

That station is so full of hate and spite you just have to turn it off after while and switch to another channel to get entire news stories or truth to the news stories.

The "hate spew" comes from their station and pours into this board from the liberals who cut down anyone who is not in your party.

And why in the world would you even think anyone needs to provide an example of anything when we ask you to provide sources/examples and you come back with the normal ha ha ha ha ha, then you and the others in your pack like to joke and make fun of people when they ask you for examples.

My example is my years of watching that station.

Don't people who assume hate in disagreement make you wonder how much they hate? Is it self hate for being part of the process of putting the country down the tubes between 2000-2008 or is it hate for a president so different from them they cannot relate on any level? His policies are moderate to those of us on the far left, so what makes him so radically different from them? I think we all know.

I love that I just post one mildly amusing article (one that even makes a joke about MSNBC as well, btw) and the forum is suddenly overflowing with gushing hatred and defenive kneejerk reactions with no reason whatsoever. We are responding reasonably. Of course, the ones going off the deep end are the same ones and all the while are accusing me (us) of spewing hate. One day, when I do not have to get to work, I am going to copy and past all of the nasty, truly hate-filled responses that have been posted in response to reasonable posts or reactions for all to see. Talk about a hate-filled article - jm

[ In Reply To ..]
Ken Kupchik is a leftwing nut case who writes for Air America. Nothing he writes is funny or serious and this article just proved it.

Over the last few days I have never seen so much hate being spewed by the lefts. Whenever one of you posts something its always going to be hate directed towards people who don't agree with you (i.e. conservatives and independents).

These statement this Kupchik idjit made are so blantantly not true. But you don't want to see that. All your concerned with is the other side being cut down, and you laugh all the way no matter whether it's true or not.

Just because you want it to be true doesn't mean it is.

Fox news "fair and balanced". I believe it's to a certain extent. However tired I am of hearing that phrase, everyone knows that what that means is they are the only station that gives equal time to hear both sides. They have both liberal and conservative people on panels. No other station does that. Mathews, Olderman, and Maddow may very very rarely have a person on who is conservative, they rip them apart and try to degrade them, and it always makes me wonder why anyone who is not a liberal would even agree to go on when they know ahead of time that they the 3 stooges will cut them down. MSNBC "a place for politics". Should actually be renamed "A Place for Politics with our spin".

Angry white man. First Bill O'Reilly does not yell at people, unless of course those people are downright lying (Barney Franks was one of those people). If someone is outright lying you bet the person interviewing them needs to call them out on their lies. MSNBC doesn't have angry white men. Are you kidding me??????? I'll name two of them to start. Keith Olderman and Chris Matthews. Those two have yelled I can't tell you how many times. Once DH and I said while Matthews was going off on someone said "whoa guy, take a downer and calm down". And Keith Olberman not angry or yelling at someone? Guess he's never watched his show. Then you've got David Shuster for another angry white man, and there's always Rachel Maddow for the angry white woman. Facts are facts and this Kupchik character ignores the facts. Ignoring them doesn't make them true.

Lesbians commenting on shows... what does a person being a lesbian have to do with anything. Is that what MSNBC is proud of...that they let lesbians on the show. Plus I've seen plenty of people who are homosexual on Fox news commenting. So that is a downright lie, but again don't know why he would even think something like that.

Thank God MSNBC will not be the network for Lou Dobbs. I never thought they would anyway...why would they...Lou Dobbs likes to get to the truth of the issues. If anyone wants the truth about anything they aren't going to get it from MSNBC. Except for their specials about prisons/lock-up.

Yes Fox was covering voter fraud by Obama's group ACORN. Somebody had to. We were certainly not going to get it from MSNBC. But at the same time they were covering that they were covering what was going on in the news and with the election. Everytime I turned to MSNBC all I saw was Keith Olberman going off on someone who wasn't a liberal screaming into the camera about President Bush, I saw Chris Matthews insulting and yelling at his guests and I saw Rachel Maddow with her elitist attitude. Then you had David Gregory, Joe S. and Shuster just acting like the immature children they are cutting down anyone not on their side making up things that just were not true.

Statement #3 is just an outright lie and anyone can do any research. Bill O'Reilly did more than attend for more than a week. He has a bachelor's degree. Greta Van Susteren has a degree. Neil Cavuto has a master's. So that statement he wrote is a flat out lie.

Maybe MSNBC is not losing advertising, but they are losing viewers (who happen to be tuning more and more to Fox). And Fox's advertisers, yeah some have decided not to advertise, but they are getting new advertisers, and the ones who have stopped advertising are losing customers because of it. I for one will not buy any product who drops advertising and on the same note I will not buy anything from an advertiser of MSNBC - "the station of hate".

This whole post is full of lies and hate but I'd expect nothing less from you or the _______ who join in and agree with you. This board is filled with rampant hate messages towards anyone not in your party and this is more of the same.

I'd take you seriously if for once you would post something not related to bashing and cutting down of people not in your party, but guess that's too much to ask for.

And to post something from a writer for Air America. Well that right there tells you one thing. It's filled with hate and the statements are not true. (okay two things).

finally someone who makes sense - liz

Thank you for all of that, you said everything I wanted to. Fortunately I had to pick up my daughter from school or I would have spent most of my afternoon here arguing. It is quite irritating how "they" can say oh we don't lie and we do this and we do that, when in fact, they don't. It is so irritating that people would rather be sheep and be blindly led by the very people who want to make this a socialist government. How many times have you heard Obama say "spread the wealth?" Do you know WHAT THAT MEANS PEOPLE? Look at what he is doing to our economy!?! He said that he would change things, but yet he continues to spend money on NEW things instead of fixing the existing problems and saving us a little money. Check out some of the bills that have just been passed and actually read the fine print... THEY ARE SLIPPING THINGS BY US!! The government was suppose to be limited in the beginning. The constitution is pages and pages of limiting the governments power, but yet somehow they control almost every aspect of our life. It is downright unconstitutional!! The Senate and House positions were not suppose to be permanent, paying positions with benefits for life, they were suppose to be volunteer positions for people that REALLY CARED about the people of this country and wanted to do the right thing. Washington is so eat up with corruption I don't believe we will ever get them out. And for whoever it was that said "What makes him so different, I think we know." I am so tired of hearing the racist BS. The man is HALF WHITE, and I don't like that half either!!!

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes I do have a problem with it too. To me its not "how many times" he said it, it's that he believes it should be that way. Have you also noticed he didn't mean spread the wealth of him and the 270+ millionaires in congress. He meant spread the wealth of the middle income, but leave him and his 1% wealthiest friends alone. (side note - have you noticed that hard working Americans have lost their savings/retirement funds, except congress of course - makes you go hmmmm). So sorry...I too work hard for my money. I do believe the people who think this is good probably don't have much and they think that we should spread our wealth to them. He also did not speak about spreading the wealth while lowering our taxes. He never had any intention of lowering our taxes. That is an oxymoron in itself or for anyone who actually believes that utter rubbish.

I'm with you. I work hard for my money. Bust my butt every day here. Why would anyone in their right mind think it's okay that we have to work harder to give it to those who don't. And if they are some of the ones who will reap the benefits of stealing our money...well they've got a rude awakening coming if they think hard working Americans are going to sit by while the money they work hard and long hours for are just going to be stolen from them.

That is not the American way of life and that's not why people immigrate to this country. To have what they've earned be stolen from them and given to others.

Sheesh people! Wake up or move to Venezuela, Cuba or wherever socialism is rampant. You would fit right in.

And you are right on two other issues. Our taxes are rising. That's right RISING!!!

And two, he CANT pay for the Pelosi-crap-care he is trying to enslave us in. Can't do it. The country cannot afford it. It will certainly bankrupt our country. Unless that is their plan to begin with.

I happen to believe it and find every word of it to be true. I am not stupid in any way. I just have a different opinion from you. The post was not hateful, however, your response was. Anytime you have to blank out words from your post to avoid using a curse, that is hateful.

And you just felt you had to share a hate-filled post. Yes you are entitled to post it. I don't care how many times you post a hate filled article, but I am also entitled to respond to it that it is just a bunch of hooey. I've been reading your posts these past few days and all you do is post things to cut down the conservatives and independents. You don't even post anything neutral.

You believe every word of it to be true? Did you do any research on his statements? How about the one about nobody at Fox having a degree. Did you even research that? No you did not. I did. People at Fox do have degrees. Have you read the biography's of Greta, Neil, O'Reilly, etc. I know you haven't. How about his statement about lesbians (which by the way what does being a homosexual have anything to do with having a commentary about news issues)? I don't turn to the news hoping to see a homosexual or non-homosexual. I turn to the news to hear someone's opinion of something in the news, their sexual preference has nothing to do with whether or not they can do their job. And on top of that there are a lot of gays/lesbians that do give commentary's on news issues on Fox. Another lie...imagine that. Everything he said in that article was a lie and if you did a little research yourself you would have found this out.

Like I said, just because you want it to be true doesn't make it true.

Yeah, I do blank out my words so that it will not be hateful. My post was full of frustration and calling out a liar (this Kupchick character that is). You are mistaking being frustrated and fed up/sick of the bulloney being spewed with being hateful. There is a difference. One can be tired of it without being hateful. That is what I posted, and looks like I'm in the company of some very good and intelligent other people who are also sick and tired of it too. We are tired of the group that comes on this board gleefully cutting down those who are not libs. The rhetoric and lies get old.

I just read my post again as you seem to think I said your stupid. I do not and did not say that in my post. Goes to show you didn't read it. Maybe you can't see the truth, I don't know, but I don't call people stupid.

There is a place for a difference of opinion, we all have our own opinions, and mine and others is this article you posted was absolute garbage written by a hateful man who works for who else...Air America - go figure.

Yes you are entitled to your opinion and I am entitled to mine. It also looks like other people are tired of this too, so at least I'm in good company.

Or people who do not agree with me are fine too, as long as they are civil and want to discuss and not insult and act like petulant children.

Colleen, the word of the day (week, month, whatever) seems to be hate. You know where that originates, from the hate in their hearts. Consider it a poorly-tied fly flung out by a troll.

It's hyperbole. I don't read many posts that start off with "hate". There just isn't much in them, I find. Not worth my time.

I agree. I just get to a point where if I find myself - Colleen

getting angry, I stop and think about what the conversation has been like so far. If this person is clearly making no attempt to be reasonable, and when the person is so (apparently) so totally oblivious to the hate in their own posts, and they can go on for a number of paragraphs to express it without (apparently) realizing it, that person is not worth it. Thanks, NJ. I think sometimes we need remind each other of this when the trolls are out in full force. Thank you for reminding me now. Talk to you later.

herself quite a bit also, cheering herself on and then commenting that she's in good company. Sad.

Note: This is a reply and the subject is the troll, not the person to whom I replied in case this is confusing.

which I happen to agree with -- look at how much HATE your statement is filled with. Shame on you!

Your're right, Colleen -- better to leave the haters to grouse among themselves. They know nothing about "reasonable" debate. Consider where they get their brainwashing from . . . . sigh

Good night!

MO is identical, same particularly angry, nasty and venomous rhetoric just falling out of his/her/their mouth like verbal diarrhea. It is like the same person just roaming around the forum picking fights with anyone she/he/they do not agree with. It is really very obvious when you read through all their posts. Even the writing style is the same. I have also wondered when they get work done as he/she always seem to be on here, insulting others. If I did that, I would not be able to make any money. Makes me wonder if it is even an MT, or just some poor, misguided person with some serious anger issues running around the different forums and dumping it on anyone and everyone.

No point in voluntarily subjecting one's self to the equivalent of a second-grade playground atmosphere. The drive-bys are getting worse every day. I've found that every now and then, it's a good idea to stay off the board and deal with reality-based life, instead of visiting what feels very much like a parallel universe.
NJ, You have said hate more than anyone on this board!! - nm

HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE...I don't see anything hateful (sm) - Nikki

about Colleen's post. I have often seen Keith Olbermann, et al., publicly apologize if they've gotten a fact wrong. In fact, they OVER-apologize.

This article wasn't about hate. There's nothing in it that's hateful. But for many people on this board, hatred is the first emotion they feel about particularly the liberal posters who may agree with each other, and you don't even see that YOU and YOUR "group" are the ones who are constantly bashing individual posters who don't agree with you, not the other way around.

Disagreeing with the content of the article is one thing, and my guess is that the reason it was posted was to generate some intelligent debate.

But hatred? No. Not hatred. Hatred is NOT the first emotion I feel when a poster bashes another poster. Sadness is the emotion I feel.

Why don't we start over and criticize the MESSAGE, not the MESSENGER???

We had great debates until you and your crew ran them off! - Spewing hate...nm

allegedly "ran off." Again with the "hate" word in your post. Everything is about hate with you, isn't it? That's soooooo sad. :-(

But there is most definitely a bright side. Every time I see the GEICO commercial where they show the "temp" that came in and replaced the gecko while he was on vacation -- every time I see that gecko hiss and spit, I immediately and fondly think of you. :-)

attacking or being attacked. In fact, it seems like these guys are all friends off camera, as well as on. I will never completely agree with his politics, but his demeanor has invited me to actually listen to him, and I've found that on a few minor points, he and I actually agree on a few things.
Same here. I feel the same way about Jon Stewart - Colleen
[ In Reply To ..]
I know he is "fake" news, but he does invite both sides, and there is intelligent, real, calm discourse even when he disagrees with the guests. I suspect as a result, he gets quite a few conservatives on the show because they are treated with respect. That is how ALL guests should be treated on all of the shows. Maybe we could actually get to the real issues that way since there would be fewer people reacting defensively.

PAT BUCHANAN for POTUS!! - Sarah Palin for VP!! Woohoo!..nm
