In 2009, Senator McCain complained that the Obama administration had "more czars that the Romanovs". It was a good zinger, and not altogether untrue.

But then a week ago, that same Senator McCain suggested that the administration needed someone at the forefront of the ebola issue, specifically calling for "some kind of a czar".

So which is it, Johhny? Do we have too many, or not enough?

Then, when the president appoints a person to that role, the republicans just about trample one another in their rush to condemn the person chosen. They don't think he has the right background for the job.

And maybe that's true. He might not. The right person for that job would be someone like a surgeon general. But hey, guess what, we don't have one of those right now. Why not? Because Rand Paul is blocking the current nominee, on orders from the NRA. That's right, the gun nut lobby is at least in part responsible for why we don't have a comprehensive plan for dealing with ebola.

Thank you, Republicans, for screwing the nation over once again.

While, yes, a surgeon general would be a good choice to handle the ebola catastrophe, no, Rand Paul is not responsible for blocking anything. The news states he is "trying" to block it. Also one man does not have the power to block a nomination of anyone. It must be agreed upon mutually by more than just one person.

Which by the way Rand Paul is 100% correct. The position of the surgeon general is to educate Americans to lead healthier lives among other things that pertain to health (hence the name Surgeon General). But instead BHO decides to try and slip in someone who has a political agenda and that is launch an attack on Americans who have the right to own a gun. It is not the Surgeon General's position to make gun confiscation/control his business.

Of course it has become the norm for BHO to be placing persons in positions they are not qualified for.

So the reality is that it is indeed BHO who is at fault as to why we don't have a Surgeon General.

Thank you democrats for screwing over the nation once again.

Vivek Murthy's position on gun violence is not really that controversial. The American Medical Association supports restrictions on assault weapons. The Institute of Medicine has argued that "a public health approach" should be used to fight gun violence, very much like those used to reduce smoking and car accidents. The NRA's executive vice-president, Wayne LaPierre, has stated on many occasions that the gun violence problem in this country is because criminals and the dangerously ill can get their hands on guns. "We have a mental health system in this country that has completely and totally collapsed," Mr. LaPierre has said. He has also said "We have no national database of these lunatics... We have a completely cracked mentally ill system that's got these monsters walking the streets," and the NRA actually says it backs the FBI-run instant background checks system and supports putting all those adjudicated mentally incompetent into the system and complains that many states are still putting only a small number of records of criminally ill into the system.

The NRA clearly agrees that gun violence is caused by the mentally ill. So where is the disconnect? Maybe the NRA is afraid a Surgeon General like Murthy would call attention to their smokescreen and bait-and-switch tactics? The NRA's position is that crazy people with guns are the problem, the government will never try to do anything to protect you from the crazies so therefore you're going to need a gun to protect yourself from what the government won't protect you from. So the NRA blocking the government's attempt to appoint an actual Surgeon General that might actually attempt to do something, anything, to curtail gun violence would fly in the face of their "government won't do anything to fix the gun violence crazies out there" narrative so they'd naturally need to block the nomination by the government of a guy like that in order to keep that narrative alive and well.

Tune in to your conservative fear and smear network after the next mass murder shooting in America and listen to the talking entertainers posing as anchors exclaim something along the lines of "the government is doing nothing to protect us from the mentally ill acquiring guns," and "see, we told you the government will not do anything to protect you from gun nut lunatics" and "thanks, Obama!"

Though I am not the poster you responded to, I feel compelled to inform conservatives regarding the truth about Sarah Palin. Far from feeling "threatened by her," we liberals endeavor valiantly to keep politicians relevant and in the spotlight like Stupid Sarah and the racist types like Chris McDaniel from Mississippi.

This is the fun stuff for us (see link).

Repeat: Liberals do NOT remotely feel threatened by Palin and are working tirelessly and just as hard as she is to keep her name relevant and in the press, although we do not charge $99.95 yearly or $9.95 monthly like Sarah does, and we will publicize Sarah and her ilk for nothing, free, payment not required at all.

I guess I misunderstood what you meant there so I will edit my title.

Honestly, we liberals enjoy watching the conservatives fight each other. We must keep Sarah Palin relevant and in the news and fan those flames of the Freedom Party. In order for the GOP to get the votes they need to win the White House in the national election, they will have to change their rhetoric and compromise, which is a win for liberals, as indeed some conservatives are already changing.

Then there's the Tea Party who criticize anyone who wants to compromise. The obstructionists will kill the GOP if the GOP doesn't kill them first. They cannot coexist as long as some of them won't compromise. So it's either "one goes down" or the GOP splits into two.

If it's "one goes down," the Tea Party will be the one buried (see Mississippi Senate race and imagine that going national).
