hyroid Peroxidase Antibodies Level

Hi, I just had TSH, free T4, and thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies tests done. The only one that showed at an abnormal level was the antibodies test (14.2) with the normal high being 8.9. I can't find any info whether or not that amount of increase really means anything of significance. Of course, I have not heard from the doctor (I looked up my tests online).

Does anyone out there have knowledge of this? Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

I the closest thing I could find to info on the numbers is if it is mildly to moderately elevated, then ... or if significantly elevated, then ... I found nothing saying what my particular elevation number would be considered.

Your "particular elevation number" won't have a meaning by itself. It is relative to the rest of your condition.

If you want to know whether the elevation is mild or moderate, look up the normal values. They should have been on the test report, but if not just look them up. Try an online endocrinology text or www.fpnotebook.com.

If you are an MT, you should be able to do this. If not, just wait for your doctor to explain it. No need to worry. It isn't cancer and it isn't going to kill you. It isn't any kind of emergency.

I thought perhaps someone on here has an autoimmune disease and knows a bit about what elevation has any significance. The high normal in the value range is 8.9 (as I listed originally) and mine was 14.2. (I don't have a clue if that is of any significance at all.) A mild elevation can be a sign of lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and a few others, whereas a significant elevation is more likely Hashimoto's.

I really didn't see anything at fpnotbook.com in answer either, but thanks for the web address. I had never used that before. It might come in handy in the future.

As far as my symptoms, they seem to be hyper/hypothyroid fluctuation but also having symptom that could be lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. You know how that goes ... and the old saying, "I'm sick and tired of feeling sick and tried." I don't visit docs very often and never have any luck when I do. They don't even seem to do basic things anymore (like ask what kind of diet you have) ... I went in asking for blood tests hoping to find something that could be treated (vs living this way) if there is something I can do about it.

You know, all your symptoms are not necessarily from the same cause. That being said, google antithyroid antibodies or Hashimoto's and gluten.

I had lupus and rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, including and as well as fatigue, inability to concentrate, GERD, IBS, itching, rashes, thyroid problems, hyperlipidemia, and elevated blood sugar, and it pretty much all vanished with a gluten-free, dairy-free diet. That is my physician's opinion, not just mine.

See your doctor, of course, but keep in mind that Hashimoto's is an autoimmune disorder like celiac, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis.
