What is a good decongestant, instead of Sudafed. I am

prescription to get pseudoephedrine.   I have tried the alternative of phenylephrine and it doesnt work for me.   Got a bear of a cold right now with stuffed up nose and ears, and need something that helps.

Of course, no insurance to pay for a doctor visit for a scrip, either.

Decongestant - Sans de nom

Well, you could go to Arby's and get some horsie sauce. Horseradish will definitely clear your sinuses.

Joking, the Donald Trump way...

or BioFreez or Icy Hot - R2

Works every time I put in on my sore, tight MT shoulders. Opens up my nose.

Vicks sniffers - works for me

They have levomethamphetamine, but it's only a decongestant. Not like Breaking Bad meth. I agree though, Sudafed is best.

Actually, either horseradish or Chinese mustard - sm

will blast the sinuses open temporarily and make you feel less stuffed up for a short while.

That's why mustard plasters were popular back in our grandmother's/great-grandmother's day.

There are various home remedies you can try. - Heloise

Try a humidifier or steam yourself under a towel over a bowl of hot water. A little added menthol or eucalyptus oil will increase the effect.

You can also apply a mentholated salve such as Vaporub.

Irrigate with a bulb syringe or neti pot. (Be sure to use boiled water and look up information on the proper technique if you've never done this before.)

Keep yourself well hydrated and prop yourself up in bed at night to help with drainage. Hot packs may make congested sinuses temporarily feel less painful.

A big dose of cayenne pepper in whatever you are eating will help to dry sinues, and a dollop horseradish, wasabi, or chinese mustard will open them and help them drain a bit.

Or you can try simmering 1/4 c lemon juice and 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar and adding:
½ teaspoon of cayenne pepper
½ teaspoon of powdered ginger
3 tablespoons of all natural organic honey
Take 1 or 2 tablespoons per day. (Shake it up each time before measuring out your dose.)

If the congestion goes to your chest, and you start to wheeze, 3 to 4 teaspoons of green tea extract in a cup of hot water with enough honey and lemon to get it down (it's bitter when that strong) will work as well as theophylline to relax the bronchi if you drink a cup every 3 hours or so.

Green tea extract may also help with sinus congestion. I'm not sure, as I've only used it for asthma. It was as effective as theophylline for that.

This country has a great way of keeping medical costs down, doesn't it? - sm

Remove as many OTC medications from the market as possible and turn as many as you can of the rest into prescription meds so people have to pay for a doctor's visit in addition to an expensive prescription drug to treat even something as simple as the common cold. Then try to stop anyone from bringing in anything cheaper from outside the country. Way to go.

Like many, the only insurance I can afford these days has huge deductibles and copays. My only real problem is that I'm hypothyroid (too many years working around ionising radiation in the bad old days). Straight T4 doesn't work worth beans for me (and is available only on prescription anyway). Natural desiccated thyroid does, but that requires a prescription in this country now as well. So I can drop a tidy bundle into a doctor's pocket several times a year just to have him tell me that I still have what I knew I had for over 20 years before I could finally get a doctor to agree (when my eyebrows finally fell out, and I'd gotten to the point that I couldn't stay awake for more than 3 hours at a time), fight with him to get a prescription for what actually works for me instead of what an overpaid drug rep tells him works better (except it doesn't even work as well--it's just more profitable), pay through the nose again for full-freight lab tests once or twice a year to check levels because this state doesn't allow you to use the cheap lab testing online, and then shell out over a dollar a day for Armour Thyroid.

Or I can get my blood drawn when I'm visiting my brother's place in another state, order a complete thyroid panel for about $20 from an online lab to be sent to his address and have him forward me the results when they come in, check my levels, and then order better natural desiccated thyroid from Thailand for 15 cents a day. (Armour "improved" its formulation to keep the FDA happy and then tripled its price, and it doesn't work nearly as well now.)

Guess which I do? But I still have to pay way too much for the insurance I can't afford to use...and don't, then pay about another $100 a year for the medical treatment I do need that the insurance won't pay for because I don't have a dozen things wrong with me to chew up that giant deductible. Medicine has become a total racket, and I am so tired of it

When you get something good, everybody wants a piece of it.  My hubbie got a very good job.  He drives an eighteen wheeler and has had some crappy jobs.  He waited to get on with this company for months.  He is making great money.  Enough so that I could quit transcription and go back to college.  (Thank you Lord)  He makes the mistake of telling people how well paying it is and everybody wants a job.  I said it's real simple if they have an opening ...

No matter how much you hate him this is a good article.  Cut him down all you want but it won't change the truth. Here's a quote from the article: Mr. Bush said that "the role of government is not to create wealth, but to create the conditions that allow entrepreneurs and innovators to thrive." I wish it was someone else who has said this because a lot of people sole purpose is hating and cutting him down, which diminishes from the importance of the article.   http://www ...
