I have lymphedema and chronic venous insufficiency

Posted: Apr 25, 2014

I found out today that the ultrasounds of my legs last week showed "reflux" in the veins and a possible DVT.  I was measured today for compression stockings in a thickness of 20-30 mm.  I've never worn compression stockings (even though they were prescribed for me years ago) because I've heard they're next to impossible to put on.  And they're hot.  Well, I went ahead and ordered some Jobst silicone band stockings with open toes, knee high.  Also, I'm scheduled for in-office laser surgery called vein ablation.  One leg at a time, with 2 weeks in-between.  He will give me Versed as a relaxer and will numb the areas in my legs where he makes incisions.

I have 2 questions that I hope someone on this board can answer.

1.  What has been your experience applying and wearing compression stockings of this thickness (20-30 mm)?  Have you noticed an improvement in the aching and itching of your lower legs?

2.  How painful is that surgery, and how long afterward does the pain last?  What is the recovery like?  He said I'll need to walk that very day and walk every day afterward, to make sure the blood circulates.  The surgery is on a Friday.  Can I go back to work on Monday?

Thanks for your advice.

get a mini trampoline - for lymph node drainage

This is for the lymphedema. I don't know about the compression stockings, but if you google "dry body brushing for lymphedema" and "rebounding for lymphedema" you will find lots of information there.

I have a mini trampoline and a body brush. The rebounding is fun, it's good for your bone density, it promotes circulation, and it drains your lymph nodes all over your body. There is something about the inertia of it that produces this effect. Also body brushing will stimulate lymph node drainage. Get a bath brush and use it for dry brushing.

Unfortunately, Western medicine only treats symptoms after the fact. We have to be preventative in our approach to health as well.

My best to you.

Do you mean instead of having surgery? - sm

I see what you mean for the lymphedema. Good points. But I'll still need surgery for the vascular/venous insufficiency, won't I?

Anyone Else Been Treated For Vitamin D Insufficiency/deficiency?Dec 16, 2014
I went to the doctor recently and literally had to demand that she check blood work on me.  Ridiculous! A little background: Over the past few months, I've been feeling more depressed, more anxious, more hormonal (I'm perimenopausal) and just overall not feeling well at all.  She immediately wanted to put me on an SSRI without even bothering to look for reasons I've been feeling poorly.  I told her I would like to see if there is an actual cause for these symptoms ...

Does Anyone Else Have Chronic Right Heel Pain?Feb 07, 2015
I've been transcribing full-time for 25 years now, and slowly over the last several years my heel has begun to hurt.  At first it was once in awhile, and it's gotten up to all the time now.  I firmly believe it has to do with the constant foot pedal motion.   I'm about to take it to my doctor, but I'm curious to see if anyone else gets this.  You always hear of carpel tunnel and back/shoulder/neck pain from this work, but I've never heard of this ...

Diagnosed With Chronic Lyme DiseaseJan 05, 2011
Hi all, I am asking for prayers from my fellow MTs out there.  I was diagnosed with Lyme disease over a year ago still undergoing treatment.  It has been a long road to recovery, but my finances are in shambles right now.  I lost my job typing because of my inability to concentrate and incorrect work constantly.  I went from $700.00 weekly down to $400.00 and still could not do that level of work.  Now I cannot apply for unemployment as I was an IC.  My husban ...
