Gout

Posted: May 21, 2010

Good morning.  Wednesday at midnight I got up from my chair and had severe right foot pain.  I was perfectlly fine the entire day.  My friend tells me her best friend has gout and this can come on in an instant.  I have pain in the ball of my foot  and great toe, and from not walking properly and protecting that foot I now have pain up the right side of my leg.  Any experience with gout?  I have heard it is extremely painful.  I have an appointment with my doctor this afternoon.  Any info would be greatly appreciated about the conditiion and its treatment.  Thanks!

I don't have gout, but my husband does, and it is very painful. He got it his toe also and you're right, the onset was very quick. His doctor put him on allopurinol that he has to take for the rest of his life. If he tries to go off it one day, he'll get a flare up. Go to your doctor, I'm sure he'll explain it all to you and hopefully get you some meds.

Thanks so much - Christine

I appreciate your comments. I am hoping if I avoid certain foods it will help as well. I have had a very high sugar intake, and I have heard that can cause attacks of gout. Thanks again.

You're welcome. I do know that the doctor told him to avoid foods with vitamin K. He had to cut back on salads because lettuce has a lot of vitamin K in it.

is caused by a buildup of uric acid in the blood. Animal products....meat, dairy and eggs are the worst offenders. If you don't like gout, throw them out. ;)

Yesterday I posted about foot pain, and sure enough I was diagnosed with gout.  I was put on an anti-inflammatory drug to cool it down, and in 2 weeks I am to have a uric acid level checked. Thanks for your comments yesterday.  I have a very important question.  I love canned pink salmon and eat quite a bit of it, especially lately.  I have done on line research for the foods to avoid to lessen my chances of recurrent bouts of this debilitating pain.  It is so ...
