hungry

Posted: Aug 25, 2010

I work, but my pay sucks.  Like so many others my paycheck comes in and there's usually not enough to cover my bills.  I often skip a bill to get a few groceries.  I don't qualify for assistance (don't know why...)  It's just me and my daughter, a FT student who works less than part time.

How can or where can we get help with groceries?  Any ideas?

Check with local churches to see if there is a food pantry program you could get into, also check with the local Red Cross for resources. I will keep you in my prayers.

Most communities have food banks where you pay little to nothing for a big box of food. If your daughter is over 18 and a student, have her see if she can qualify for benefits.

Look up this ministry online and find a church local to you that uses it. If it isn't available where you live, do an online search because there is another one with a different name (can't think of it) that serves the states that AFM doesn't serve. It is a federally funded program that provides boxes of basic food for about $30-35 a month that can feed a single person 2-4 weeks. They also have supplemental boxes like fresh fruits and veges, meats, meals (like Thanksgiving dinner) for about the same price as the basic box.

Do call your local church that provides this service because people buy extra boxes for the church to give out every month and maybe that would help you.

Also check on your local Freecycle board. A member of mine gets produce from a local supermarket and shares with other members for free. Not all Freecycle groups may do this, but it is worth looking to find out.

I hope you find some help.

Food assistance is pretty easy to get - most will let you do it on a walk-in basis no appointment or tons of paperwork necessary just show an ID and maybe do 1 form.
If you have any large Baptist Churches they usually have a food ministry.
Also call Catholic churches and see if there is a St. Vincent De Paul Society. You might need an appointment or call back but they will help you either with food or a gift card.
One time the food I got from a church brought those awful pantry moths into my home so you want to becareful with any boxed or bagged grains.
I would call any large church that is closest to you - they should have a voicemail with days and times you can go in there.

Does your dd get work-study on her financial aid package? I know a long time ago that she would automatically qualify for food stamps but she would have to make a statement that she buys/prepares food seperate from you. Perhaps she could pay you some rent to make it a seperate household. She would get around $200 per month in food stamps if she qualified for the max benefit for one person. I don't know what the rules are now with being a student but if she is working at least 20 hours a week she should qualify if she is a seperate household than you.

Not preaching, but have a few suggestions. sm - MTSO (anon for now)

There is no reason why a good transcriptionist should be hungry, not able to make their bills, etc.

This post makes me angry, not because you are hungry, but because there are so many companies out there starving their MTs, literally.

My heart goes out to you and to the others that post similar questions. Obviously you are willing to work, you just need the right company.

There are a lot of MTSOs who do not want to see people leave the profession, do not want to have unhappy employees, do not want to see things go downhill because of some of the companies out there. The companies that care the most seem to have owners and managers that were and are MTs themselves. There are some big ones and some small ones and they include Keystrokes in Illinois, Medscribe in Florida, Execuscribe in NY and NC, MTS in Florida, Expert Transcription in Miami, Celerity in Denver, New England Medical Transcription, MTS in Texas, and I am sure others, that care about their employees and make sure that they are earning a good living and enjoying their jobs. I talk to a lot of these people pretty often as I am involved with MTIA and they are not the big, bad guys that they are made out to be on the company board. Try talking to a few new companies and turn things around for yourself. Don't sell yourself short and keep your chin up. It will get better.

In the meantime, I have been in your position and although it took some pride swallowing, I went to the local food pantry. They were very, very nice and helpful and made me feel special, not a burden. Go to your church to see if they have emergency funds for your rent or mortgage, utilities, etc. I also applied (and received) food stamps for a few months. It all got me through to where I was OK, and I am forever grateful.

What Am I Hungry For?Mar 18, 2013
Maybe its because I am sick to death of working, cooking, cleaning, repeat, or maybe because I am a lousy cook and am sick of the only things I know how to make, but I just cant stand to walk into that ugly kitchen of mine and make another meal. I am so hungry for something, but have no clue what it is. I know last week it was lasagna, but I cant make that. Over the weekend, I wanted eggplant parmesan, but now I dont want that. I dont know. If anyone has a recipe that is totally delicious a ...

Let's Starve! Kids Forced To Go Hungry For Hours Mar 04, 2013
A very courageous fifth-grade teacher in the Chicago Public Schools has written a scathing critique of the almost comical misery she and her students endured when they participated in a massive February 28 event kicking off Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Active Schools campaign. The First Lady’s campaign is an effort to improve (and in some cases, bring back) physical education in American schools. White House officials called the event “a groundbreaking, earth-shattering, awesomely-in ...

Don't See Maher And Matthews Feeding The Hungry, Sheltering The Homeless? Feb 05, 2012
Bringing this up from thread below, where right-winger rant is ongoing.  Typically, the poster is mindlessly pulling stuff out of thin air and making wildly uninformed claims, which obviously have not been researched.  I'm always more than happy to accommodate this sort of information deficit. Bill Maher donates to the following charities: US Comic Relief.  Aids the homeless and people in need, particularly disaster relief. The RFK Memorial.  Advancing the c ...
