Zumba

Anyone else try a Zumba class?  I wasn't sure I would like it but started going in February once a week and LOVE it!  It's hard, a lot of work but a lot of FUN!  It is a huge class and I have a co-worker, my boss, my sister and her son's girlfriend, my daughter-in-law and her mother I have convinced to go with me and my mother will be starting when she is back from being a snowbird next week.  I figure what else am I doing besides watching TV that one hour a week?  Our instructor is really good, tells everyone to do what they can do and always encouraging, makes me want to try harder.  I figure it is a good work out for my fat self and makes me feel good to see my nephew's skinny, athletic girlfriend sweating too! Tongue out

I do a water zumba class, love it! I would like to work my way up to a studio zumba but my joints are so bad I don't know if I'll ever be able to do it.

I live in a small town, and last year a small Zumba class started at our rec center. It's a great class, because anyone, young or old, fat or skinny, can do the class. Some days our class has been as small as 2. Other days, it's been as large as 15. We have the good fortune to have a real Latin Dance instructor as our Zumba teacher. So in addition to our workout, we're getting a lot of real ballroom Latin dance instruction, as well. I just wish the class were more often than once a week. I've done other aerobics classes, including Jazzercise, but I like Zumba the best by far!

Ages? - oaf

I've thought about Zumba but I am 55+ and out of shape. What do you folks think? R there many older people in your classes? It just looks like fun.

I'm 60, and I go to help get in shape, without high- - impact. Most in my class are - sm

probably in their 50s, some older, some younger. Those who are very heavy or out of shape do whatever they can (and love every minute of it). We're just happy to have them there. I used to be in better shape, but spend too much time lately chained to my PC. As I'd mentioned earlier, my class is very dance oriented, not impact-oriented. You have the option to ramp up the impact and/or energy expended base on your own comfort level. We not only learn lots of cool steps, our teacher also helps us work on our frame (posture), arm movements, etc. Everyone in my class, regardless of how aerobic or non-aerobic they choose to make their workout, has learned enough that if someone asked us to dance the samba, mambo, cha-cha, waltz, tango, etc. with them, we'd know enough to be able to pull it off, even if we'd never set foot on a dance floor before. It's also enabled me to meet lots of my neighbors in town that I'd otherwise never see.

You said it looks like fun, and it IS! That's the main purpose of the class, is to just have fun. There's nothing competitive about it. A class at a large, popular fitness center might have more young people in it, and if that seems intimidating, you might check into the local community centers and senior centers. My teacher teaches at the community center in my town, and also at a senior center in another town, and at a gym in yet another town. So it's always possible that the teacher at the fancy gym with all the young "hard-bodies" in their class may also have Zumba classes at other locations, too. I think the character of any particular workout class will have a lot to do with the place it's offered, and the type of people who show up.

Nothing wrong with giving it a try! :)

I am sure they are all ages, my daughter is 13 but decided it was "too much work," nephew's girlfriend and her sister are 17 and 19 and enjoy it and my boss is 60 and loves it. It really is for all ages and abilities. Plus it is free so what else do I have to lose?
Your class is free? Mine costs $6. Sometimes - I have to skip it when I dont have any money.

Anybody Doing Zumba, What Do You Think Of It?Jul 13, 2011
A girlfriend and I have decided to try out the newly formed Zumba class in our town.  I'm pretty out of shape and overweight, so I'm wondering if I can handle that much of a work out.  I get out of breath going up a flight of stairs.  I really need to get back in shape and this look like a fun way to do it. ...
