Anybody doing Zumba, what do you think of it?

Posted: Jul 13, 2011

A girlfriend and I have decided to try out the newly formed Zumba class in our town.  I'm pretty out of shape and overweight, so I'm wondering if I can handle that much of a work out.  I get out of breath going up a flight of stairs.  I really need to get back in shape and this look like a fun way to do it.

Not good for the joints of the knees cos of the motions used. Try bicycling on a stationary bike.

I tried zumba...once...just once ;-) - Hayseed

I have past OLD ligament injuries to a knee and I had to walk out because I almost landed on the floor and back on crutches. I felt like a total tard.

It's definitely NOT for people who have any old injuries that still may rear their ugly heads when strained. Just too many quick movements and it's so easy to get caught up in the class and music, which makes it really easy to mess things up again.

I can't even do beginner yoga either because of the unstable joint and that really bites. It would be really nice if the gyms could offer programs for those of us suffering from or trying to recover from injuries, or old age, and just need to slow things down a bit, but the majority seems to want go-go-go classes these days.

Me thinks the senior center might be better for me personally!

I have beein doing Zumba for almost three years now. I recently came across what are called "slip on dancers", these little bands that you can slip on over your shoes that make it easier to do turns and to move on almost any surface you may find yourself doing Zumba on (not recommended for outdoor use). These make it much easier on the knees (at least for me). Zumba is so much fun....you don't even feel like you are exercising and you don't realize where that hour has gone when the class is over because of the fun you are having. Just take it at your pace when you go to a class, you don't have to do everything like the instructor does it. Listen to your body and just move as best you can....the key is just to keep moving and have fun while you are doing it! I questioned myself when I first started and wondered if I could do it but I don't regret going to that first class one bit. Feel free to email me and I can get you more information if you like.

I tried Bloch dance-sneakers, which would've been great if our floor weren't so sketchy, surface-wise. (Small town, old building). When they re-do the floor, it's good for about 2 weeks, then goes back to having slippery spots again. I felt the danger of an unplanned slip was more of a risk than I wanted to take, so I went back to running shoes again.

I found by using an older pair of running shoes, with the tread on the ball of the foot a little worn, is the perfect combination for me. I can still do the twisting moves and yet stay in control.

I've already got hip OA, and the knee on that side is showing signs of impending OA, as well. But I find that the more I use those joints, the better they feel. I always feel wonderful, and limber after Zumba. It's when I sit in this danged computer chair all day that things start to hurt & stiffen up.

Our class is geared for everyone. If you forget a move, or modify it, our instructor just calls it a "new move". The emphasis is on fun. We have all ages and abilities. One lady only does half the class, then leaves. But at least she does it! Only rarely do we get someone who tries it and leaves, but in all fairness, we also lucked into having an amazing instructor, who is not only Zumba-certified, but also a certified Latin ballroom dance instructor. We all think she totally ROCKS! :)

I started Zumba classes early last spring and thoroughly enjoy them. I am 45 and about 70 pounds overweight so it is not easy for me, but I feel so much better after a class because I am moving. My instructor always tells us that we know what we can do and how much we can push and to take breaks as needed. Some days I am taking water breaks after every song, other times I can last for at least 15 minutes, it all depends on the workout. Then there are times like yesterday when I was at the store and happened to hear one of the songs we use and was tempted to break into random Zumba moves in the middle of Target. I say try it, what are you going to do with that hour of time anyway? Even if you only actually exercise for 30 minutes, that is 30 minutes more than you would have done sitting in front of the television.

Why not start out slowly at home? - anon

March in place as fast or as slowly as you want. Reach up and stretch in different directions. Walk. Dance around to music. Don't set any goals for time or intensity. This is called "limbic" exercise, which means just moving your body without thinking about it. It is an easy and safe way to start out.
