Something slight of a miracle maybe?

Posted: Jul 21, 2012

I wrote a few weeks ago about getting a stray cat fixed.  Well low and behold Thursday I put his food down near the entrance to the carrier and he started eating (starved like usual), and I gently and slowly guided him into the carrier.  HOORAY!!!!!  Been trying for over a year to get him to allow me to touch more than just my finger to his forehead.  So, poor guy was panicked but soon calmed down.  Then stupid me though thought I'd put the food in and let him eat as he was so hungry and he'd calm down.  But sure enough he tipped it over and food smashed everywhere.  So called the vet and they got him in right away.  We thought he was sick (like a feline disease type) because he is so thin and not putting on weight no matter how much I feed him, and he walks slow, always in fights and coming back with wounds.  But he's healthy.  They gave him all the vaccines, neutered and treatment for ear mites and fleas.  While he was at the vet we went and got a large cage called a dog training cage.  Very secure and room for a poop box, his bed and food bowls, so we picked up him this morning and now he is in that.  Not very happy I might say either, but safe and on our porch so I can keep an eye on him through the window and will go out and try and get him used to us.  This morning I put my hand through (part of hand that would fit) and he let me pet his head, so hoping he will become somewhat domesticated like his sister did.  He'll also stay in the cage for a couple weeks after we move until he gets used to the new place and will know where his home is.

Just wanted to keep you updated.  So so thankful we will not be abandoning him when we move.

Thanks for the update! - MMOM

You are such a great person to be doing this for that lucky guy. You inspire me to keep trying to befriend a male tiger who I feed also. He is also very skinny and eats a lot, but just won't let me touch him. He comes in the house and is okay with my other cats, but just is having a hard time trusting me. I guess I will just keep on trying. His lone kitten is just starting to trust me (mama does fine) and I am going to have her fixed once baby can get along without her. But him I do want fixed, but he's so aloof. Thanks again for the inspiration and he's lucky to have you.

I had a large carrier and a couple weeks I put it out with the door left open so he could sniff around it look inside, etc. Kind of made it part of the scenery. Then I slowly started moving his food bowls closer until he was eating his food close to the opening. Then Thursday I put the food down but on the edge of the carrier and I was talking soft and saying oh what a sweet boy you are and while he was eating I gently guided him in. I was surprised he went in because the day before I tried and he ran off. Think he was really hungry and interested more in the food. Just kept doing everything in slow movements softly speaking to him.

Poor guy now has figured out there is no way he can get out. He was climbing all over and hanging like a monkey from the top of the cage, but now think he wore himself out and is sleeping. Once he explored the cage a bit I slid a coolwhip top into the cage with soft food and he ate like he was started. I don't think he's eaten in a couple days.

Hope things work out for you. 4 years later it finally worked out (just in time for the upcoming move too).

Good luck. Keep working with him and he'll soon trust you.

Sending good vibes and hugs to fellow cat lovers! - by the by...

Has anyone been successful in training their cat to use the toilet? Got the idea from watching some Youtube vids and am going to try it myself, because the only downside to cats is the litter box!
I wouldn't want to do that because - sm

I don't think it's particularly sanitary to use a toilet after a cat has used it.

I've seen it, but I just cannot see myself going after a cat. If they and get it on the seat or splashes or whatever, personally I just couldn't do it. I don't mind cat box. We have 5 of them.

Several years ago I came home from work mid-day to what was supposed to be an empty house (save for pets). As I opened the front door of my very tiny house, I distinctly heard the unmistakable sound of a strong stream of urine. Yikes! Instead of high-tailing it out of there which is what I should have done, I instead armed myself with a club, walked very quietly to the bathroom, opened the door, and there was my little gray female cat, Ishbi, a Russian Blue, straddling the toilet. This was a first! I was impressed.

Ishbi had a cat door and could go in and out whenever she wanted. I never saw her do that again. As I'm writing this, I'm still trying to figure out her motivation for doing this and now I recall that she was regularly bullied by my other 2 cats (a grown male and a kitten). They would wait at the cat door, a big hulking tom and a little fuzz-ball, waiting for her to come in or out, and then they would block her way and have a feline punch-out. I'm betting they were on the outside that day waiting for her and she figured out a way to elude them.
I have heard stories of cats teaching themselves - how to use a toilet. sm

I have never heard of keeping a cat in a cage though, except at the vet or the animal shelter.

Where did you get that cage and how much was it? - L&L

I could really use something like that from time to time. Does it have enough room for them to roam a little?

We got it at Petco - Here is a link. - sympathetic cat women

It's very very sturdy and worth the money. I'll put a link below that shows it. First, ordering online is cheaper than what we paid, but we had to have something right now and couldn't wait for it to be shipped. We bought the largest one (900 series) cost $165. You can save a lot by ordering online. The 900 series cost $90, but unfortunately we didn't have time to wait for it to be shipped. Had to have something right now. Here's the link. They have many sizes. They also have some with one door and some with two doors:

Yeah, two or so days later and it popped into my mind. I wouldn't say there is room to "wander", but there is room to move around. He sleeps at the end of it and when I put a food bowl in he gets up stretches and walks about 3 or 4 steps to me. We actually have two cages and are thinking of hooking the two together, like an L shape so he has more room to walk.

Not sure you'll even see this message as it's been a couple days, but if you would like a link we found some really nice outside cat cage things I would be more than happy to provide the links. Just let me know.

Thanks. I think I've seen the outside cat - L&L

corrals before. I used to get an enormous catatlog of pet items, but I don't remember who sent it.

I'm in a 2nd-floor condo with no land. I just need to keep them out of things from time to time. This sounds perfect. Thanks.

I have a 3-tier cat cage my cats love - just me

Google it. Nice white color, each level has its own door. My cats love going in it and sleeping. My Norwegian Forest cat even scales up the cage and sits atop it with several stuffed tuxedo cats I have sitting on top. So funny.... We leave the doors open for them, but we lock it when having furniture deliveries and when leaving the door open for air. They have other colors (black and silver) that you can use outdoors as well. If you get the white one, beautiful but limited, so hurry.

You are wonderful and an amazing human. nm - love all furry things
