So Cracker Barrel removes Duck Dynasty

Posted: Dec 22, 2013

Said they didn't want to offend anyone, so removed the items, then said they ended up offending Phil Robertson supporters, so put the items back.

Moral of this story: Someone will always be offended.

You are so right, always - Karla

Years ago it was not this way. I was just talking with my husband a little while ago and saying if you like something, ok, if not ignore. I don't think people can do this. I am just so over every Christmas people up in arms because someone has changed the words to a Christmas song, heard today someone upset because an American flag put beside a synagogue, people upset because you say Merry Christmas or you don't say it. What in the world? I am so live and let live and I can ignore what is not important to me. Like I said, this was not always like this and to Christians this should be a joyous occasion which it seems not anymore and to others, well celebrate what you celebrate and can't we all just get along? Now I know what Rodney was trying to say.

So my question is this... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I have never seen DD. Don't care to either. Not my kind of show I enjoy, but others do. I also don't judge people and I have a friend who is gay. He's a very good friend and makes me laugh and whenever I'm feeling down he and his roomate are always there for me. What they do is their business. I don't agree with what the DD guy said, but he has the right to give his opinion on things.

Here's my question. Like you said someone will always be offended. Why is any place removing things that "might offend" others. If you are a Christian and don't believe in that lifestyle you're not allowed to give your opinion because it might offend some. Well what about the people who are into that lifestyle. They are offending others who don't believe in that lifestyle. Do they have more rights than the others?

Here's my solution (and I think it's a pretty good one). Keep your stinking opinions and lifestyles to yourself. I don't care if John and Jim or Sarah and Becky have relationships with each other. It's their business and nobody elses, but I should not have to be pummelled with news of it every day. I've got other issues I have to deal with (like how I'm going to find an extra 800 out of thin air to buy health insurance I don't need because evidently my current health insurance plan was not enough. I'm not old, but I'm not young, but now I have to start paying for abortions and birth control pills and help to pay for free insurance for others and help pay for the politicians health care so they can get a huge percentage paid for by others. I guess they think money just falls out of the sky for us or maybe it grows in a garden, so really, someone's personal life choices that don't affect me should be kept in their own home like I keep mine.

Because you brought that up, congratulations - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Congratulations. You must be making too much money to qualify for the affordable care act subsidy. Hubby and I, together, our premium will only be $465, and we are not young, and I do not think we are exactly poor, either. When I was young, I was paying higher premiums just because I was female "at risk" of becoming pregnant. I never did get pregnant, but I still paid the higher premium. Right now, I am paying premiums so people who have cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc., can receive treatments. Luckily I am still healthy and do not have those diseases. Some day I probably will and I hope there will be people who understand that.

Yeah, I wish. No I don't make that much money - No congratuations in order

[ In Reply To ..]
I wish. You seem to think you know everything about the health care and what everyone is going to get. Congratulations for being such a smarty pants. Unfortunately in this case you don't know what you are talking about. I wish my troubles were so small that I made too much money to qualify.

First off you don't know my age, don't know my budget, don't know if I have a husband or wife and don't know if they are working or not. You don't know if I have any pre-existing conditions, don't know if or how many children I have or their ages. You don't know if I'm taking care of an elderly relative. You don't know where I live so you don't know what my housing or food or other cost of living is. But hey you seem to know so much. Guess what? You don't. I live in a state where the website is so messed up nobody is recommending going and putting all your personal information (social security, bank account info, etc), because there is no security. There are not enough people to help everyone in our state sign up. On top of that the people who have signed up don't know if they really have insurance and won't know until next month. People have signed up, gone to the doctor/hospital to find out they don't have insurance and they can't find them signed up. The subsidy is no longer an option for us and the people who are trying to sign up here for it are learning that. My insurance plan was perfect for my lifestyle. It covered exactly what I needed. I was not forced to buy products I did not need. I paid for what I did need. But thanks to some that was not good enough. The people who don't care about my health are only interested in getting more money from people to spread it around to other things that have nothing to do with health care.

I'll tell you this...the one saving grace is that I read now that nobody is required to buy the OCBS socialized medicine they were trying to push. I know it's p.o-ing a lot of insurance companies because they dropped all their customers figuring they sign up again and they'd be able to get more money off of them. Now that is falling apart on them too. Thank God I waited and wasn't roped in duped by all the hype. Now my challenge is finding a way to make half my month's salary go just to pay for the health fraud that I don't need or waiting awhile longer to find out if they finally start getting this under control and make it affordable for people.

So taking it back to the OPs subject matter, which is what my post was about and you decided to take it off the subject, no with all this going on I don't care about DD. I don't think any product should be removed from stores/restaurants or whatever it is because someone said something that offends others. As the OP stated there will always be someone who is offended. You cannot make everyone happy. People need to stop with trying to please everyone. Someone somewhere will always be offended at something. They need to start acting like adults. If they don't like something don't buy it, look at it or watch it, but when you start taking away someone's freedom of speech how far is it going to go. I think many of us know there are stupid people out their who say stupid things. A simple solution is not listen, look, watch or pay any attention to it.

So congratulations for hijacking the thread and proving to everyone you don't have all the answers and I hope you learned a lesson in not to assume you think you know everything.
Here is what I know - sm

Here is what I know:
1. You say I don't know if you have a pre-existing condition. It does not matter because your rate will not be adjusted for a pre-existing condition as it was before Obamacare. That is probably the greatest benefit under Obamacare.
2. You say I don't know if you have a elderly relative. Last I heard, Medicare still covers the elderly.
3. You say it is to risky to apply. I still have not heard of anyone having a problem because of security. I do know that 40 million people who shopped at Target now have their personal information for sale on the black market.
4. In your first post you say it is $800 to pay your health insurance premium, and then in your second post you say that is half a month's salary. That would put you at about $19000 a year which would put you at $75 per month premium after the subsidy for Obamacare for a single person. Even less if you have more than one in your family.
5. You say I do not know all of your personal expenses, etc. True, and it does not matter. You will get a better health insurance deal under Obamacare, regardless. That's what you want, right?
6. You say I hijacked the thread, but I responded to your statement "I'm not old, but I'm not young, but now I have to start paying for abortions and birth control pills and help to pay for free insurance."

I forgive you for calling me a smartypants.
What you think you know is wrong - No congratulations in order
[ In Reply To ..]
1. Pre-existing condition: If I have cancer and a stroke or heart attack it will cost me an extra 201.40. If I've had a critical illness it will cost me an extra 190.67. If I have cancer only it will cost me an extra 116.50., etc, etc.

2. Yes, medicare covers elderly "heath care". There are other costs involved with taking care of an elderly relatives.

3. You mean to tell me you have not heard of all the problems with the website? You are either joking or purposely evading the truth. It is all over the news. That comes from the government people themselves. They have not been able to guarantee your personal information is safe, yet they still want you to input it. They have had to hire people to fix the problem and last I heard it was not fixed yet and they were still working on it.

4 & 5. In my first post I didn't say it was $800 for my health premium. I said I have to find an "extra" $800. There's that smartypants coming through again. You want to put up all these calculations, but again without any correct information or facts. You seem to have an answer for everything. Unfortunately for you your figures are wrong. Again, if people don't know what they are talking about it's best not to assume, especially when they don't know me or my situation, salary, family household or anything about me. This isn't a one size fits all deal. Every person/family is different, and no, I don't get a better insurance deal under Obamacare. Are you a trained salesperson for Obamacare? If so, please provide me with your 800 number and we'll go over this together. I can provide you with all the information I received from my states website.

6. The thread was about DD, not about you proceeding to tell me you know everything about my situation regarding health care and how much you calculate that I'm making.

I neither asked for nor need "forgiveness". You should be sorry and ashamed of yourself and asking me for forgiveness for acting as though you know everything about me. First you claim I'm rich, then you claim I'm poor and qualify for subsidies. It goes to show that sometimes when people don't know other people's situations, they shouldn't proceed to act as though they do.

If you want to discuss anything other than what the OP posted about DD then we would need to go to a new thread.
Here's some things you should know - but don't

Many Americans could face a rude awakening when they discover that the subsidies they thought they were getting to offset their health care costs are less than what they were promised.

This should go on the politics board, but I think the moderator has deserted this place ... - ...forever.

I agree and have noticed - I am sorry about that
[ In Reply To ..]
There is a poster that will chime in with the OP and then manage to slip in a derogatory remark about some government policy. I generally do not want to break into a thread, but am getting tired of these political comments going unanswered.

Sincerely,
"Smarty Pants"
It's hard to reply to a person when they took it off - subject and decided to
[ In Reply To ..]
challenge a poster about her income and household situation. A poster talked about Duck Dynasty (what the post was about) and mentioned she/he had more things to worry about than the DD show and then a poster came back challenging her as though she knew his/her whole life story. I think that poster should have taken her comments to the political board. So when a person replies and someone wants to reply to them then I think that is okay. It's a shame she had to keep coming back posting like she knew everything about this poster and decided to take the post off subject.

Maybe the moderator is on Christmas vacation or swamped with work.
People in Mass has had similar insurance - since the early 2000s, loving it
[ In Reply To ..]
This was required by the state. They are the only state that has been on this giving it a run. It was started, think called Romneycare then, but people much like they are now for the new insurance most will be required to get. Balking, fussing and now has worked out extremely well for all. This should be checked out. Oh, by the way, several years ago I went to Canada, this was prior to the new insurance coming in here and knowing they had I set out to interview people. Met guy from Australia, they have also. I probably talked with 12 people and NO ONE had anything bad to say against it. By the way, they did laugh at Americans wanting to know why they were calling it socialist medicine, that is about the only thing they found funny was what Americans termed it. Read about Mass insurance and see what you think.

So my question is: There are things that upset all of us, me for - example paying for kids

[ In Reply To ..]
schooling in my property taxes way past the years I would have had my own kids in school but yet I had to pay, so you see you don't have choices sometimes in this life. You the birth control pill issue, supposedly free insurance (?) for others and I had to pay for kids that did not belong to me and way past the time I would have kids in school. I think we about come out even on things.

Your question is this - My question, too

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't care who does what to whom in the privacy of their own bedrooms; it is truly none of my business and I could not care less, but I get really tired of having to hear about it all the time. I don't care if people sleep with a rhinoceros--but why do I have to hear about it?

My question to your question, all of us - probably get upset about something

[ In Reply To ..]
you brought it up about the birth control, etc., abortion and the like and I in return have things I had to pay for that I did not agree with, like paying for kids when mine were out of school and had been for years. Do you think I liked doing that? Did I have a choice? Nope. Let's say this is tit for tat. Your time now to pay.
Actually, no it's not - There is no payback
[ In Reply To ..]
This isn't some payback thing where "well since I had to pay for something I didn't want time for you to pay for something you don't want". That's okay though I'm not sweating it. Since I spent the last week trying to get through and sign up and unable to along with over 50K people here, my solution is I'll save all the money I'd be spending, put it into a fund to cover if I ever need to go.

This is all imploding on them. I'll wait it out until they get it right. No sweat off my back. They should have had the bugs worked out and everything up and running. Their choice, their fraud, their loss, not mine

Duck Dynasty: I do not see the draw. - It looks painful.

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't get the attraction to shows like Duck Dynasty and Honey Boo Boo.

I would rather have hot pokers shoved in my eyes than watch any reality TV show, actually.

I think I could force myself - to watch Honey Boo Boo

[ In Reply To ..]
rather than have hot pokers shoved in my eyes, but hey, that's just me.

I watched Honey Boo Boo once - but

[ In Reply To ..]
If I'm going to watch something that requires subtitles, I'll watch a good foreign film instead ;-)

But my take was they seem like a well-grounded family with lots of love, tolerance, and aren't afraid to have fun.

Regarding DD, never watched it. Definitely something I don't think is even worth giving a try, but I do think everything is money motivated. That's why Cracker Barrel brought them back on board. Their return clientele is probably more pro-DD than not, I assume. I don't eat there myself, although I did eat there once, which was once enough.

And regarding A&E, I heard or read somewhere that contract talks were going on before or during this suspension controversy, so that could have something to do with it(?) in the whole money-motivating theory of mine. But again, just my musings, no fact base to this that I am aware of.

I found a recipe for this on-line & I thought I'd ask if anyone here has made this recipe.  It calls for "one can of cream of chicken soup" but it doesn't say the size of the can.  I don't know if it means the small can or the large can (going by Campbell's).  For the amount of potatoes in the recipe, I would think a small can would not be enough, but other similar recipes specify the smaller can - however those recipes also only call for half the amount of ...
