inspired by the song? I the movie he jumps off the bridge because he gets drunk one night and has sex with a man who turns out to be his boss at the sawmill. He's overcome with guilt and shame and jumps off the bridge.

If you read about the move on Wikipedia, it says that Bobbie Gentry said the song was based on an actual person, but she never knew why this person jumped off the bridge. The director of the movie just came up with a reason.

Love the movie, love the song, love the singer.

I believe the NY Times should be brought up on charges for this. if not the whole newspaper, at least the reporter who got the information.
