My own MIL rant

Posted: Jun 17, 2013

I know nothing can be done about mine, because the husband isn't on board, but I wanted to vent.  My MIL is SO CONTROLLING and it drives me INSANE!!!  She doesn't ask us to do anything, she TELLS us what to do and of course, hubby does it.  She can plan a spur of the moment family dinner and we are expected to drop any and everything to attend, having a prior engagement is NOT an option.

This is what happened.  MIL divorced hubby's father when hubby was 6 years old and he is 43 now.  MIL moved the kids 1000 miles away and remarried.  Her second husband died a few years ago.  So, MIL was divorced from hubby's dad for 37 years and his dad died recently.  MIL was contacted by someone and was told that hubby's dad had left some stocks with a value of $5000 for hubby and his two brothers.  So, MIL calls hubby over and the other brothers and has a form for them to sign, making a check be sent to HER.  She said in order to split it up, she would give them each $1000 and she would keep the other $2000 and ALL THREE of her sons just signed the paper, because "she said so"???

I asked hubby why she thought she gets money when they had been divorced 37 years at the time of his death and the stocks were meant for HIS KIDS, not for her.  She had another husband who died and she got HIS benefits at death.  It's NOT about the money for me, it's about her making the decision all on her own that she basically gets twice as much as each son gets, when the money was never intended for her.  None of her kids will say anything to her about it, they just do what she says, but it irritates me beyond words!

Thanks for listening:)

Wow. Hubby and I would be having a VERY - serious talk or talks

You're right - it's not about the money, although that certainly is a big aspect of it. The fact that not one of those boys questioned her machinations is astonishing to me.

I'd have a really hard time dealing with my husband (if I had one) if he behaved that way with his mother. That just doesn't get any respect from me.

They apparently are afraid of their mom - OP

I've been married to this man for 15 years and this is far from the first disagreement about his mother. When he and I talk, he is usually in agreement with ME, but once MIL is around, seems he gets amnesia or something.

I did tell him this was ridiculous and he said maybe his mom "needed" the money (she doesn't) but I told him that would be fine if she ASKED or if THEY decided to give it to her, but to just take it upon herself to decide "her cut" that is selfish and controlling of her and I don't know why they would put up with that.

Wow...that is complete BS! - Just Me

Oh, I'm pretty sure that she could use some professional help. To be honest, your husband might need some too to regain what she has taken from him. I have a manipulative mother, so I know how personality disorders work. For the most part, "There is nothing wrong with them," and you are a horrible person for even mentioning they get help. Sadly, I had to cut ties with my mother in order to free myself from her toxicity. Hopefully you and your husband are able to come to some sort of an agreement with her that isn't that extreme. Good luck. I sure do feel for you.

He sounds very weak - see msg

Sounds to me like you married a weak man. Which works for you, too. When you guys have a disagreement, he agrees with you. When he has one with his mother, he agrees with her.

You married a weak person for a reason. It works in your favor too, you know. He sounds weak with you as well.

I am not saying his mother is right, I'm just pointing out that a lot of people marry weak people so they can control them.

Not necessarily - control

MANY, MANY people are "controlled" by their parents to an extent, but wouldn't put up with being controlled by anyone else. I think it is especially so in the south where people are raised to "always respect your mama, no matter what". I know my mother used to control me for YEARS before I finally took a stand, but nobody else would even think of taking that approach with me. Sometimes parents don't want to realize their "babies" are grown and are supposed to make adult decisions and the children of the parents don't know to be an "adult" and stand up to a parent just like they would anyone else.

I understand - but...

Said poster's husband sounds weak, period. We don't know if he truly agrees with his wife or his mother. He just says "I agree" to both of them. Makes me wonder. A good many people marry weak people so they themself can control the other spouse. I wonder if this guy stand up to his wife when she's wrong about something.

Short RantJan 02, 2012
For the last week I've been suffering right upper quadrant pain, had my gallbladder and appendix out ten years ago.   I finally gave in and went to our local Urgent Care Center and after three hours, a RUQ ultrasound, bloodwork and UA, they told me they couldn't figure it out and sent me home with a rx for hydrocodone and instructions to see my PMD the next day and get a referral to GI.   It turned out my doc was on vacation all week, and I coudln't function on hydrocod ...

Pregnancy Rant...SMJan 24, 2010
Ok...here we go... :-) I am currently just over 21 weeks pregnant and I couldn't be happier! However, I am having a very hard time taking people's "advice" gracefully. This is my first child and by no means do I know everything, but I am pretty well versed in the basics of pregnancy (I transcribe for an OB-GYN). It just seems like everybody I know has something to tell me about how I should be doing this, or I should be careful of this or I shouldn't be doing that. And on ...

Selfish And Stupid....A RantSep 02, 2011
I am sooo furious right now.  I know this is not anybody's business, but I have to rant!  My brother (age 33) and his wife (age 23) have a 15 month old daughter who I adore.  They do not have a car.  He does not work.  She works part-time at Walmart.  They live in a motel where my baby, innocent niece has no where to run, no where to play, one path around a bed.  When she comes to my house, it is like the tasmanian devil has been unleashed.  We have t ...

at the rally last night?  No wonder the GOP is panicking.  It was interesting to watch the people behind him react.  One lady got up and left when he said he would bomb the #@+* out of the oil wells.  Then he called the people of Iowa stupid!  He has definitely gone off the rails! ...

Late Payment/bank Advice Please! Sorry, Also Includes Mini-rantApr 21, 2012
Yesterday was payday and I was very excited, of course! My van payment ($242) and my personal loan payment ($95) were due on April 11th. Both of these are through my Navy Federal Credit Union account that I had since I was 16. Anyways, long story short Friday was 9 days late and as soon as I had that paycheck in my checking account they froze my account where I could not take anything out. They do that if you are 10 days late, which I was one day shy of. Technically today would have been 10 ...
