Embarassing Denture

Posted: Mar 9, 2012

This is very embarassing and sounds sort of stupid (at least it does to me), but I am having problems with a denture.

In July 2011, I had to have my remaining upper teeth extracted and a full upper denture made.  It was ready just before Thanksgiving.  (I've wondered if I got too "used to" eating with no teeth !) Anyway, the dentist gave me this "New Denture User" orientation kit.

I do fine with cleaning it, brushing with toothpaste/toothbrush, etc.  Unfortunately, my problem starts with the adhesive to keep it in!  It's not large enough to accomodate a pad like Seabond, so I have to use adhesive from a tube.  Didn't like the zinc in the Fixodent adhesive, so I'm using Polident adhesive now.

My question is:  How in the world do you get the excess/remaining adhesive off of the inside of your mouth?  I can get it off the denture with no trouble, but DANG! it's TERRIBLE to try to get it off my gums!  I've tried wiping it off with a tissue, with a paper towel, with a washcloth (not easy to do), and just about anything else you can imagine.  I've had times when I just give up and go to bed with that nasty-feeling stuff still on my gums.

Does anyone have any light they could shed on this problem?  I am almost ready to just give up with wearing them!  I am truly desperate here.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

PS:  You can snicker if you like.  I know it sounds funny, and I've tried to laugh about it myself, too.

I had 3 of my front teeth knocked out in a total golf ball accident 2 days before I was to help dressed in formal attire for the class ahead of me for their graduation. How's that for a 17 y/o going to interview at a private college in 3 days? I understand your embarrassment and I wish you well.

Nope, not snickering either. - No experience.

You probably tried this, but you did not list it, so here goes: According to the Polident website, use warm water and a soft brush.

Just a thought, but can dental floss be gently run across the gum and under the glue? Good luck and I hope someone can help.

I haven't tried the warm water and soft brush in awhile. Perhaps I should give it another shot. Might just try the dental floss, too.

You see? This is why I posted here. I figured I would get different ideas/suggestions and I have! My brain has been running in a kind of roundhouse manner lately. Thanks!

I don't have any solutions; just wanted to say I am - not snickering at all - nm

You should talk to your dentist. sm - Lynn

It's been over 6 months since you had your teeth out and your gums have probably shrunk. The dentist should re-line your dentures so they fit better and you might not have to use any denture paste. Also, you should get Dentucream or another product as regular toothpaste can put little scratches in your dentures. Good luck!

I do have experience with this problem. - sm

Try using less adhesive, just a few dabs. Also, you can use Sea-Bond, just use a scissors and trim excess. I found that after time I didn't need to use adhesive any more as the denture snugly molded to my mouth. As another poster mentioned, if you continue to have problems see you dentist.

Try calling the Polident help line. - nm

Polident Powder? I have a full top denture also and HATE the stuff in a tube. I found this powder and have loved it. You sprinkle it on dry on your denture, then the moisture from your mouth moistens the powder and turns it to a glue-like substance. It removes much easier than the tube stuff. If there is any stuck to your gums it peals off quite easily.

Good luck.

I have not had many of these sorts of issues in my life, pretty sure I have candida overgrowth right now....but need to know if this is normal? I bought some OTC one day yeast treatment and used it about an hour ago and I am itching like absolutely crazy now.  Does that mean this medication is not what I need and I have something else wrong or is that normal?  Thanks ...
