Bottled water or tap?

Posted: Feb 18, 2014

I was wondering, just out of curiosity, why people buy bottled water? I use reusable, washable, green-type containers and tap.  I use as little plastic as possible and recycle.  In areas with bad or contaminate. Water, I get it, but when I go to the stores, I see a lot of folks loading up on bottles of water.  Like I said, just curious.

I make sure I read where it was bottled.

For me no on tap water because it contains harmful chemicals including chlorine, lead, benzene, arsenic, mercury, cadmium, fluoride, pesticides, giardia and cryptosporidium (and those are just a few).

Fox News did a huge report just last month that our bottled and processed waters have as many chemicals, viruses and bacteria as some well or tap waters. I purchase have reusable containers as well, but have a high end filter. I hope I'm good! I do try to be environmentally conscious!

I drink filtered tap. I hate all that plastic with - bottled water.

I just think it's extremely wasteful, and I worry about the plastic seeping into my drinking water. We have a filter for the tap and change it every few months.

I only buy bottled water at those vending machines outside the stores for my tea. I don't like the way the filtered tap water tastes for my tea and also the bottled water does not leave deposits in my tea kettle.

Filtered tap water is the way to go - sm

I don't use a filter, as I like our city water. But I would use a filter on the tap before I would drink bottled water that comes from a tap! Bottled water is just tap water from someplace else. Also, we don't need to cause any more pollution to out land than we already do with the landfills. Whoever started the bottled water craze did a great disservice to our environment.

filtered tap in my aqua zinger or citrus zinger cups - zing anything

Tap for me - Jen

I am fortunate that I live in a city that is surrounded by artesian wells. Our water is safe and has a great taste. I agree with the above poster who said that whomever came up with the idea to bottle a free and readily accessible resource did a terrible thing to our environment. My grandpa has a working well on his land still! We take jugs (reusable crocks, not plastic) when we visit. I do understand the need in places where they have bad water, but hate the idea of water in plastic bottles being sold. On about the same note, I don't use plastic grocery bags. I bring my own reuse bags. Just doing what I can.

Filtered Tap - Never pay for drinking water

Filtered tap here, a good filter. I say never pay extra money for water. Silly, if you ask me. I will buy a bottle once in a blue moon, just so I have a portable way to carry my own filtered water when I'm out.

RO water for us--sm - anon

We purchase 5 gallon water jugs that are BPA free, go to Wal-Mart and get the Culligan RO water .27/gallon. We use this for drinking and tea and house plants. The source for the water is the same as what is at my house but the RO process makes it much more palatable. I do read the water quality report every year too.

The water at my house is very, very hard (gets as high as 33 grains of hardness) and while we do use a water softener, we do not like the taste for drinking or when making coffee and tea. Oh, we also use the RO water for the iron to keep sediment build up down.

I'm in San Francisco. Regular old tap water. - So far, so good.

If you want really good tasting anything, it is best in glass. Plastic has got to go. It makes everything taste strange. Glass is the next best thing to filtering and bottled plastic.

I meant to say is better than plastic or filtering. Just saying ;)
Glass is great but it is also heavy--sm - anon

5 gallons of water weighs 40 pounds as it is, if I were to put it in a glass container, chances are when I am putting it on the water crock, it would be dropped and broken. There are 3 gallon water bottles in glass so they would be liter but still not nimble. I do find after the water has been in the ceramic crock, it tastes better.

Anyone Own A Berkey Water Purifier?Aug 22, 2010
We've been looking at these purifiers for over a year and still undecided. We definitely need to get something. For the past 4 years, we've been getting our water from a very reliable pure spring for drinking but we have to plan around bad weather.  We'd really like to buy a whole house system but they're out of our price range right now.  That's another question I have...who has a whole house system and what is the average yearly ...

Chloroform IS Found In Swimming Pool Water.Jul 03, 2011
Check this out. Found it on Wikipedia. Chloroform was discovered by three researchers independently of one another. Chloroform was reported in 1831 by the French chemist Eugène Soubeiran, who prepared it from acetone (2-propanone) as well as ethanol through the action of chlorine bleach powder (calcium hypochlorite). Calcium hypochlorite is a yellow white solid which has a strong smell of chlorine. Calcium hypochlorite is used for the disinfection of drinking water or swi ...

The Real Reason Kansas Is Running Out Of WaterSep 04, 2013
This same dynamic is playing out in most states. There are moves to get Congress to, first of all, stop subsidizing these practices with taxpayer dollars, but agribusiness, which never intended to get taxpayer money off its back, just our ability to control what's done with it, has its paid agents, our congressmen, fighting anything that will interfere with profits. Second, of course, is nasty old government "interference" to encourage agribusiness's transition to proven means of growi ...
