Assembly of God churches.

Posted: May 14, 2012

I have been going to Assembly of God churches for a long time.  I love the fellowship that they provide and a lot of music.  Most of the people who attend these churches are very down-to-earth type of people and good-hearted, generous of spirit.

Oddly enough I was raised in the Catholic church, but I knew for a long time I did not belong there.  Of course that was many years ago and the reliigion was much different then or so I have heard.  The priests seemed distant, preaching some kind of Hell and damnation rhetoric, which I suppose was to terrify the parishioners.  Well they certainly did a good job as I was convinced at a young age I was going to Hell and there was nothing anybody could do to prevent this.  Finally at age of 11 I escaped from this Hell and damnation religion.

In retrospect, trying to understand what made me turn to Assembly of God, I believe I was looking for a God of Love and Peace.  I have been to 3 different churches of this denomination and they all seem alike in that it is uplifting and joyous.  I finally found a God of Love in that church.  Some longtime Catholics might be offended by what I say here, but this was just my experience as a child and this was back in 1950, so I am sure things have changed.

What are you looking for from religion or if you do not go to church, what comfort or peace do you get from praying, reading the Bible, etc????

That's odd, I'm a born and raised Catholic and I don't recall hell and damnation preaching. I prefer to stick with the religion that was entrusted by Our Lord to keep His Word safe. The Catholic Church was founded by Our Lord starting with Saint Peter (the first Pope) even Jewish do not dispute this. Saint Peter was given the keys to Heaven literally through the Catholic Church...a road map to get there. It just makes logical sense if one is going to be a Christian that they would go where Our Lord is both in Spirit and in the Flesh. I guess a sense of community and music is more important though?

I agree that the OP's perception of "hell and damnation preaching" in the Catholic Church is a little odd, even for the 50s.

It is more in keeping with stories anti-Catholics tell about Catholics. I have known many fundamentalist Christians who held erroneous ideas about Catholicism. It was almost as if it was a formal belief of their church to hold these erroneous views.

I think that there is still a lot of anti-Catholic activiy in the United States, just as there is still anti-black and other minority activity. Some is on the part of organizations like the KKK. Some of it is on the part of certain fundamentalist churches.

Preaching that God is Love is more typical of Catholicism. An emphasis on charity, tolerance, and social justice is more typical of Catholicism. That is the example of the saints, after all. People like St Francis of Assisi and Mother Teresa of Calcutta preached love, not hellfire and damnation.

As far as music goes, you must have not been to a Catholic worship service since the 50s if you think there is no music and no participation. There is very high participation on the part of worshippers and there is a broad range of musical styles ranging from gospel to rock to classical.

But, as the above poster noted, it is worship, not entertainment.

Catholicism brings me closer to God. That is why I remain.

The media certainly is not covering this. This must be investigated and stopped. It is probably a furtherance of terrorism and racism propagated by the controversy surrounding the shooting at AME. I don't for a minute believe it is not purposeful, directed and pointed arson and terrorism. ...

According to the Marietta Daily Journal, the legislation prohibits the state from creating and maintaining a database of licensed weapons carriers and repeals the state-required l ...
