Positive Cologuard test... - Kiwi

Posted: Sep 4th, 2020 - 10:00 am

Hello,

I am 52 and never had a colonoscopy before. I did a Cologuard test the beginning of August and just found out it's positive. So, I am getting a colonoscopy now with a first visit consult with a GI doc end of Sept. I called my health ins to find out if the colonoscopy would be covered 100%, figuring it would be but just double checking, and turns out because of the positive Cologuard, that the colonoscopy would now be considered diagnostic and not preventative. We still owe some on our deductible so the costs associated with this procedure are going to be massive for us and I'm really upset about it.I called the GI doc already and asked the girl who answered if they would bill it as preventative and she said not if I had a positive Cologuard.

Has anyone had a positive Cologuard with then the colonoscopy being considered diagnostic? If so, did the GI doc you went to bill the colonoscopy as preventative to save you the costs of it being billed as diagnostic? I am just wondering if others have experienced this and what they have done about it. We have blue cross/blue shield. This is very frustrating because if I refused to get the colonoscopy done to save money and then later had big problems because of it, it would cost the insurance company much more than a few thousand dollars than if they just covered it to begin with. Thanks.
