Will liberal policies survive COVID-19? - sm

Posted: Mar 31st, 2020 - 1:00 pm

I don't see a single liberal policy that is looking like a good idea in light of the pandemic the world is facing. Does anyone care to discuss?

Communism/socialism/government controlling the means of production -- See China's exports to the EU. The Chinese government can ramp up production of medical supplies and tests and ship these out to struggling countries in the EU. But where's the quality control? There are reports that these supplies and tests are defective. That's what happens when the government controls industry.

If there was private industry the government can assume an oversight role and make sure the quality is there as well as the quantity. If they can't get the quantity, they can pay other companies to chip in.

Gun control -- People in Los Angeles (I would assume that includes Democrats too) are buying large amounts of firearms. What happened to the second amendment? What happened to "no one needs that much firepower?" When the chips are down, even liberals want to protect themselves with guns.

Border wall -- This is obvious. But there's another aspect to this that people may not have considered. In Italy, people are using social media to orchestrate looting raids on grocery stores. They're out of money. What happens when Mexico runs out of food? Do the drug cartels try to loot the US? Is anyone saying "we don't need a border wall" now?

Medicare for All -- The EU has socialized medicine. It's not working that well for them. Their hospitals are just as overloaded as New York's. The US government has already said they will test and treat everyone even the uninsured. It makes sense in an emergency. But it's not the kind of thing you want all the time.

Climate Change/Green New Deal -- Is lockdown how you want to live for the rest of your life? No airplane travel. No car trips unless you're going to the store for food or necessary supplies. Whenever I think of combating Climate Change I'm going to remember this incident and think "No thank you!"

Right to choose/Abortion -- The Left criticizes Trump for allowing 2500 COVID-19 deaths over the course of 3 months. But they refuse to shut down the abortion clinics that kill 2500 unborn every day. How does that make sense?

Sanctuary Cities/States -- Does anyone still think this is a good idea? Are you willing to import people from Spain and Italy and let them loose in your state? If someone says, "Hmmm... I don't that's such a good idea." Are you going to call them racist and xenophobic?

Universal Basic Income -- Congress passed the $2 trillion stimulus bill and they're planning to pass more. Meanwhile, Trump is being criticized over what the lockdowns are doing to the economy. People needed the stimulus to pay their bills and buy food because they weren't allowed to work. If you gave them the stimulus every month would they ever go back to work? How many times can you give $2 trillion to people before the country goes bankrupt? Even if you argue the $2 trillion stimulus is only $2 trillion because of the corporate bailouts, the point remains. You can't just give out money and expect goods and services to materialize from nothing.

Have I missed anything? Is there a Democrat policy that actually makes sense given where we are with the pandemic?
