Considering the blunt force ability of the govt to shut - down the economy, the question

Posted: Apr 1st, 2020 - 6:37 am In Reply to: I think everyone wonders how it's going - to be paid for. Do

is how and when to allow a govt to apply that power. State and local governments wasted billions of dollars on useless government spending and did NOTHING to prepare for exactly this sort of thing.

The problem as I see it, was the panic got way out in front on this one. H1N1 came in without a big buildup. The media wanted to support Obamacare. They avoided mentioning H1N1 much at
all. We clearly didn’t stay home, shut down businesses, or disrupt the economy like we are now. And somehow we survived.

We need to develop a better plan for the next time, and education the public so that they understand we can’t simply shut the nation down every time this sort of thing
takes place. It's not sustainable.

Cuomo said "sometimes you need an emergency to force change." That is a scary statement.

As Americans, we are coming together and many businesses, banks, etc. are not going to charge for essential services. That was done without the govt. We will get past this.

Read about the 1918 Spanish flu in 1918. Woodrow Wilson never shut down the government, but we were a different country them pre FDR.

Good intentions will always be pleaded for every assumption of authority. It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters. -- Daniel Webster
