Your hypothesis doesn't really hold water. More than 70% of the country wanted to hear from witnesses. That's generally how a trial works. It would have been nice to actually hear from the witnesses who had firsthand knowledge of what went on so they could at least defend the president. No one has defended him, but his legal team has come up with creative excuses for his behavior. If he's so innocent, the firsthand witnesses that he prevented from testifying during the congressional hearings would have cleared everything up. But as it stands, there are still many unanswered questions. Either way, he still an impeached president, which isn't a good thing.
