We had an engineer from Yemen visiting my father - for a couple of years. Very good guy.

He was away from his family for 2 years because he was afraid to go back. He finally got his wife and children out to Malaysia and met them there. I believe his family is still there and he is working in Iraq for US gov.

Anyway, his take on it was this: The recognized government basically only control its capitol city Aden and some surrounding area. The rest of the country is split up among the tribes. As it is tribal, most in the country don’t pay much attention to central government. It is weak and needs support from outside to survive. Enter Iran.

Saudi doesn’t like Iran being there so that stirred up the ruckus. Problem is Saudi is basically a paper tiger. They have planes bombing every day but have no effective ground force. The ground troops they do have are mostly paid Pakistanis guarding the borders. With out a land invasion they can’t “win” the war, only keep bombing. So now they are bombing the rubble because everything was destroyed the first few months.

Life goes on because as stated in the beginning, the country is mostly tribal and loss of the capitol, government or government troops/implements of war are of no concern to the average man in the desert.

That is his take as I recall from couple years back.
