kaepernick's stand, et al. - anotherMT

Whether I agree with taking a knee or standing, the fact that our forebearers, our dads and moms, our husbands and wives, our sisters and brothers, our sons and daughters have gone to war and fought for exactly this right to express what we believe in. This was never about the National Anthem or our flag. That’s a whole ‘nother debate (about equality and brutality, et al). Do I agree? Don't know. I know I'm fiercely patriotic in a very quiet way. I stand for the anthem. I place my hand over my heart and I get all weepy whenever I hear the national anthem played. But, this is exactly what everyone in the military fought and IS fighting for...the right to kneel or stand, the right to protest for or against, the right to burn the flag or fly it, the right to demonstrate (for or against something, anything, everything). I bade my dad goodbye so often as a kid when he was in the navy, I can't remember all of the homecomings and the tears when he left, all the letters that were redacted while he was on WestPac (he was career navy). I don't think we can simultaneously rejoice our freedoms while telling someone he or she (or they) can't express theirs, especially if they differ from ours. What in the world is the point otherwise?

Some or many may disagree with me. That doesn't make me wrong. By the same token, the fact that there are those who disagree with me doesn't make them wrong.

And Nike? Apparently, there is enough money in the coffers to take a stand, whether we agree with it or not. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a crazy Phil Knight fan, but his son is a major stockholder and has decided apparently to take a stand. Good for him. (I live in Eugene, University of Oregon, Phil Knight beginnings, etc). The message is clear, no matter who said it.

Believe in something...
