Someone said she paid for her own appendectomy. That is not a catastrophic illness. Should you be struck with a cancer that requires chemo and surgery as well as followups, the middle class person cannot possibly pay for all that out of pocket. That is why there are more bankruptcies in this country because of medical bills than in any other developed country.
