I thought it was a brilliant message - -- and not one to make light of

I thought his appeal to the right was particularly germane from an ideological standpoint.
The BEST thing about this crisis is.... - just saying
[ In Reply To ..]
that there may be a nonmilitary solution looming. Obama is right we cannot ignore this but I hope he is forced to delay or halt the strike...
He said he's putting the vote on hold. IMO this is a done deal. - threat card worked
[ In Reply To ..]
Having said that, there's still lots of work to be done, but weapons admitted by Assad, Russians on board and cooperating.
I think this was Obama's plan all along.
He won't be "forced" to anything. The threat was intended to - create this situation. If it doesn't
[ In Reply To ..]
work, he'll go through with it, then America and the other nations will return to talking with Syria to get Syria under better control.
One reason Obama does NOT want to strike Syria is that it might further upset the balance of power, Assad might be overthrown, and we can't be sure who might replace him. We might find Assad, bad as he is, trying to deal with some religious nutcases who can't be reasoned with and are now in control (maybe) of the planet's 4th largest store of poison gasses.
This still does not absolve him of seriously s.m. - OP

threatening yet another war. He got lucky.
No, he didn't. He never threatened war or intended war - as an outcome
[ In Reply To ..]
He called their bluff. He forced this move. Pure and simple.
Don't project the Bush/Cheney mentality on this administration.
No, it was worse than the Bush/Cheney mentality - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Whether or not you like to hear it the facts remain so. He planned to start a war without congresses approval.
What he had planned was much worse than what Bush/Cheney did, which was pretty bad.
During Bush years Obama said Bush must go through congress. When he gets in office he says he will bypass congress and start WWIII whether or not they approve.
Thank God the people of the country and world were heard.
What? What was this last week all about? He DID go to Congress. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Where did you hear all this?
He was not starting a war. It was to be a controlled strike, but IMO, it was just scare tactic (which worked btw).
What Bush and Cheney did was to misrepresent intelligence so they could start a war for personal and financial gain.
FIRST day in office, President Obama signed the U.N. protocol - outlawing the use of Napalm on civilians.
[ In Reply To ..]
This was 29 years AFTER the U.N. passed it to keep what we did in Viet Nam from ever happening again. 29 years during which Presidents Reagan, Bush, Clinton, and Bush refused to sign it. FIRST day in office.
Oh, yes, President Obama is "worse" than Bush/Cheney if that's what you consider worse. I'm glad, and proud, that I voted for President Obama. Do you feel that way about having put Bush/Cheney in power? Twice!?
no, poster, he did not plan to start a war - just say anything
[ In Reply To ..]
You - are
[ In Reply To ..]
kidding me, right. Some of you will just always find fault in whatever he does. I have always thought he is handling this issue well. He has never demanded we invade another country (unlike someone else we know). He has been taking his time and gathering information and facts rather than a personal agenda for dragging our country into war. He did not jump into anything and has been discussing this issue with Congress for a solution. I certainly do not want our country involved in another war, and neither does he. He is following democratic process in an intelligent way to figure out the best course of action.
Luck has nothing to do with it. Even a limited strike - might cause Assad to be overthrown! sm

Please chew on that one for a moment. Syria's in the middle of a civil war. Assad's barely holding onto office as it is.
Even a very limited American strike could tip the balance. THAT's why Assad turned to his biggest ally, Russia, to broker a settlement for him. To save his skin.
Of particular note, Obama doesn't WANT Assad - overthrown at this point. That's because
[ In Reply To ..]
in the middle of a civil war we don't know who would replace him. Instead of a Mafia family-type thug, Iran's presidency and military arsenal could fall into the hands of a religious fanatic like Iran's leader.
Given that reality and Assad's awareness that this literally could cost him his life, and have dreadful consequences for his family, it's clear that Obama's strategy all along has been to force Assad to fold with the mere threat of a strike.
We would strike if the threat wasn't enough, though. The entire world is with us on wanting Syria restrained. We've had an overwhelming advantage from the beginning and we won't be losing this one.

An Impossible Task (AGT Tonight)Sep 07, 2010I just came upstairs after watching America's Got Talent tonight. In the years the show has been on I don't think there has ever been this level of talent.
