Just wanted to explain my "dislike," since I'm sure there are some on this board who are happy with that decision.

Don't keep us in suspense. Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama and Columbia are the only Central American countries with historic banana plantation economies ethnocentric jingoists call BRs. No amount of repetitive winger mantra chanting can rewrite that definition, no matter how hard they try. The reason I'm so familiar with this is because my GREAT-grandmother actually took a United Fruit Company chartered cruise ship tour out of NYC of the Banana Republic countries sometime back the 1920s, which is just about the same time the BR term had any really significant meaning.
We can call him Chinchilla if you like. - Sounds good to me.

I can't imagine why anyone would be happy to see such a large company taken over by a chinese company. Seeing this kind of things happening makes me sad as I do believe our time as the super power has come to an end..we will be replaced by China and its ALL of our leaders fault.

Which leaders sold Smithfield foods to the Chinese? - Happy campers

would be stakeholders who got 30% more than the day before the sale on stocks. Bet upper management and managers who managed to run up the impressive amounts of debt the sale absorbed aren't exactly saddened by the news either.

Speaking of leaders, GOP Gov Bob McDonnell, who has been courting trade partnerships with China for quite some time via trade missions, has a new feather in his cap on display while gushing over his the pork export revenues. He didn't seem too terribly concerned about job losses, potential labor issues or changes in working conditions since the facilities will stay put, including headquarters in VA, as will management and staff, who are probably relieved to hear that news. At least they'll have some time to look for new jobs before the effects of those changes come to pass. The Gov also didn't give a second thought to China's recent lead and melamine food safety scandals. I mean, what harm is there in throwing a little fox, mink and rat meat plus a handful of chemicals in here and there during the processing phase? No biggie as long as the price is right, eh?

so it is the leadership of this country taking us down. Why are they doing this? They know the danger.

There have been so many, many bans on toys because of their lax safety laws, the melamine in milk, their farm-raised fish, etc. Why the heck would they allow all these unsafe foods in this country?

Unfortunately, the restrictions on Chinese importation of catfish, basa, shrimp, dace, and eel fall short of assuring the health and safety of Americans. DO NOT BUY those "Bagged Fish" unless you look at where it comes from.

“FDA will detain Chinese seafood at ports until it can be verified through a third-party laboratory report that the shipment is free of drug and chemical residues. Unfortunately, although the FDA has established protocol for the testing, which can be done in China, there is no assurance, that the testing will be accurate.

“China is leading the world in industrially farmed seafood production, in illegal drug residues found on imported fish and in exporting seafood to the United States."

You can read the whole PDF report on imported food from China.

Now they want to allow imported beef, pork, and chicken. It's truly scary. I want my packaged meat and fish in the supermarket (those in the plastic trays and plastic wrap) MARKED as to where it comes from and I will not buy "farm-raised" fish unless I know it doesn't come from China.
It's also the USDA who makes the rules. - Truthhurts

Imported food products that fall under the jurisdiction of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) – meat, poultry and egg products – have a different and much more stringent regulatory scheme to follow. Since 2003, China has been interested in exporting poultry products to the U.S. After several reviews by USDA staff, the Bush Administration proposed a regulation in November of 2005 that would permit China to export cooked poultry to the U.S. provided that the raw poultry came from either the U.S. or Canada. The reason for the restriction was due to concern within USDA about poultry diseases in China and the inspection practices in Chinese poultry slaughter facilities. In April of 2006, the Bush Administration approved that regulation but the Chinese were not satisfied with the scenario and no Chinese plants were certified. Instead, China continued to pursue its goal of having its own poultry exported to the U.S.

Congress intervened and in two successive fiscal years there was explicit language contained in the appropriations bills for USDA that prohibited it from spending any money on approving poultry imports from China. China retaliated by stopping importation of certain U.S. foodstuffs. At the beginning of the Obama Administration, a coalition of big U.S. agribusiness interests wrote to the new president urging him to oppose any extension of the congressional ban on poultry imports from China. So, in 2010, the ban was lifted but Congress insisted that USDA give the Congress regular reports on the status of poultry imports from China.

Right before USDA was scheduled to release its February 2012 report to Congress, we became aware that USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) – the department’s trade promotion agency – was playing a significant role in advocating the importation of poultry products from China. That prompted us to file a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to find out exactly what role that agency was playing in the decision-making on China. When the USDA report to Congress was finally released, our suspicions were confirmed. Instead of USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) taking the lead on determining whether China’s food safety system could be declared “equivalent” to ours when it came to poultry products, FAS was spearheading the effort to move the process forward to permit China to export poultry products to the U.S.

are just delighted that even more Americans will lose their jobs. They can pay workers slave salaries, and they will add to the pubs' plan of NO middle class any more.

In addition, it will help to serve their interest in a one-world economy.

When President Obama TRIED to create more jobs through improving/repairing our fading/dangerous infrastructure, the pubs were against that (simply because it was Obama's idea), and it never saw fruition.

Thank you for your post. I've already made up my mind that if no reasonable pubs are voted into office in 2014, then I'm moving to Canada, as the USA will no longer be my country as I knew it.

I've been reading up on this food and water site since I found the mushrooms I bought last year and apple juice bought a couple months ago as a "Product of China." Guess where those items went.

I also understand that you have to watch Green Giant boxed veggies for the same "Product of China," and I almost fed my pooch Milo's Chicken Jerky until I got a warning that it was making dogs sick or dogs died from it.

Outsourced, Imported Food is a Recipe for Disaster

By Anna Ghosh

Thanks to Michael Pollan’s new book, there’s a lot of buzz right now about Americans’ meals being outsourced, but a connected and equally troubling trend – with even riskier food safety implications – is that Americans’ food is increasingly being imported from countries with abominable track records for food safety. And the country on the top of the list is China.

This week, Food & Water Watch Assistant Director Patty Lovera testified before the House Committee on Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia and Emerging Threats to discuss China as the leading producer of many foods Americans eat: apples, tomatoes, peaches, potatoes, garlic, seafood, processed food and food ingredients like xylitol and vitamin C.

Headlines about risky food from China have become all too common – melamine in milk, a chicken for beef swap, toxic juice, exploding watermelons (really, you can’t make this stuff up). Even our pets are threatened. Since 2007, chicken jerky treats imported from China are suspected to have caused more than 600 cases of canine illness and deaths to date.me

In her testimony, Patty explains how combining trade policy with a food safety regulatory system that’s not up to the job of dealing with the rising tide of imports is a recipe for disaster. She warns about the risks involved when cash-strapped agencies turn to third party certifiers (doubly outsourced), and how consumers’ only tool to be able to make informed decisions about where their food comes from – Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) – needs to be improved and expanded.

... is getting it locally. Find a local farmer selling meats, go to local farmer's markets for fresh produce (be sure to ask how it's grown) and if you can, purchase enough to put up in the freezer and/or can, etc.

You might not be able to avoid all imported-from-China products, but a majority, especially if one stays away from processed foods.

Also, when looking at where some fruits and veggies are from, don't be too quick to dismiss them (excluding China, of course; trust them about as far as I could toss the entire country), as many countries have outlawed many of the pesticides that the U.S. still uses. Their product might actually be healthier. Again, though, local is almost always best.
