Where have the moderates gone?

Posted: Aug 20, 2015

This is my take, as someone who has lived a very long life (both my enemies and my heirs would say "Yes - much too long!") - and who has observed the political landscape for more than four decades:

We have come to the point that both major political parties have been hijacked by their radical elements, with the result that now there is virtually no possibility of finding any common ground, or achieving any sort of compromise. on most of the pressing issues that come before Congress.  Hatred and contempt for people of the other party are both encouraged and lauded, and reaching agreement - once, the hallmark of civilized discourse - is now regarded as betrayal to "the cause" (whatever that might be).

People, know this:  We are being used by the political masters whose existence, fortunes and indeed, whose very way of life, depend upon our hatred of one another.  (Do you "hate" people of the other party?  If so, you have succumbed to the strategy.)

It was not always so.  There was a time when liberal and conservative could, even if with difficulty and by each surrendering something regarded as costly, achieve a common purpose and move this nation forward.

You're right. This is all true. - I admit it.

I'll admit that I have no respect for anyone in the other party. We did used to get along, even enjoyed talking politics and teasing each other in fun. Those days are gone forever. How we vote says a lot about us. Even within our parties there is in-fighting. I've recently signed up with a popular online dating site and I put in bold letters my political party because I would rather be alone the rest of my life than date a person of the other party.

Unless you believe - the screaming crazies,

The current prez is a slightly left of center moderate. HC is a slightly more left moderate. The R's are now having go all out bat-s--t loony to get noticed in a field where an entertainer is the frontrunner. If an R gets elected, he/she will have to tone it down because the rest of the R controlled gvt is moderate to the point of being comatose... they just pretty much show up and collect a paycheck.

I used to be a casual Democrat and now - I am becoming a fierce liberal

My take, and, of course, it is biased, the "liberal" of old, was easy-going, casual Democrat, that felt they knew the right thing, but they weren't so bold as to steal it from anyone or lie through their teeth (not talking about the people at the top, they are pretty much alike, both sides), but, I believe, the Democrats have awakened and realized (and with the groundswell of the Baby Boomers and Millenials) that we are going to have to take what is right and fight until there is nothing left to fight about, and that every election is important. We have finally realized that the Republicans will coddle and sooth their way into office to do as they wish, and as is said "We aren't going to take it anymore!"

I, for one, have been shocked as to some of the blatant statements and actions that have been taken against President Obama, who was rightfully elected. In the past, we would gather the wagons and work together. That all came to a complete screeching halt when he was elected. (maybe it was because we didn't have a good national crisis 911 style, and/or no war, and/or no great injustice that we have allowed ourselves to falsely bond over). Every single issue has fallen to partisan decisions.

I also feel that social media, emphasis on the media, has awakened many to the issues and made people choose sides, where before they just were not that involved. (24/7 cable news, and all social media included). Really, 25-30 years ago, who would have noted that there were police officers killing people by shooting them in the back, other than the occasional happening in a nearby city/town? Do you remember when Vietnam was just a 10 minute (more often less) on the evening news? We get a lot more info than we used to, but people really aren't any smarter, they just KNOW that they should choose sides.

We all must humbly consider the limits of our philosophies. - sm

There is no political position on any subject whatsoever that does not have its limits.

Being a "fierce" anything is foolish.

I'm a constitutionalist. According to the left, - I'm extreme. The country

as founded is dead. The Democrat party has been taken over by radicals. Bernie Sanders is an admitted socialist. Republicans are cowards or closest Democrats. This is why Trump is doing so well. He's tapped into that.

The Democrat party has been taken over by - evil. The Republican party

isn't far behind except for 1 or 2 candidates.

It doesn’t seem we can ever win this war with evil on earth. We are too divided.

After years of indoctrination in school, especially college, - socialism seems to be

appealing. A good chunk of Americans want their government largesse without consequences. As long as the fedgov can create money, it will continue but someday it will blow up, but they don't understand that.
Not one European socialist country gives anchor baby - birthright citizenship, that one

good thing I can say. Liberals saying we need to be more like Europe. There you go.
The EU is not foolish enough to grant anchor - baby citizenship.

and he was convinced since Bill Clinton did nothing that because of his dereliction it would lead to a long era of Islamic terrorism. Looks like he was right. He's not a democrat anymore.

Lost ModeratesApr 15, 2017
I know I am not the only moderate who has been hiding between the radical left and the radical right.  I hold values from both liberals and conservatives.  I want a stable, safe country, a good paying job with benefits, afordable healthcare, responsible gun laws, and equality across the board.  I am anti-abortion and pro-choice.  I am spiritual yet do not tear down any religion.  I believe in separation of church and state and freedom of religion.  I do not believe ...

Moderates From Both Sides Need To Form A New AllianceJun 24, 2016
I am sick of an atmosphere in which Americans view other Americans as "the enemy" and are manipulated by "the ruling elite class" to wage pitched battles against each other, while the elite ruling class makes hay out of the chaos and ruin. How difficult can it be for ALL of us to see that "my-party-uber-alles" can NEVER be a successful political philosophy?  How reasonable is it to assume that ANY party has all the answers to governance - or even the best answers?  How likeliy is it t ...

Moderates (liberals And Conservatives) Need To ReassertNov 10, 2016
I'm old enough to have lived during a period in which "liberal" and "conservative" weren't terms describing mutually exclusive political positions. They weren't polar opposites, and they weren't even necessarily adversarial. We had social liberals who were fiscally conservative, and vice versa. The political spectrum from liberal to conservative was a Bell curve, with most somewhere in the middle, and relatively few out at the fringes on either far end. Those in the middl ...

Conservatives And Moderates Will Clean Liberals'Nov 10, 2015
The liberal debacle in the most recent midterm elections foretell the outcome in 2016.   Note that during Obama's "reign of executive privilege", in which he has defied the very principles of the Constitution, more seats at every level of government have been won by the opposing party than in any two consecutive Presidential terms in American history. Sick and tired of the "tyranny of the minority", and disapproving of the direction that this nation has taken under the feckless Obama, ...
