So, according to the CA Dept. of Transportation guy, "in American companies there is a shortage of welders."

Welding is a skilled trade and pays a decent wage (or used to). Are the state and federal governments subsidizing training programs so that more Americans can learn how to weld? Probably NOT! Although it sounds like this was a lame excuse anyway. The CA DOT was probably PAID OFF to give the contract to the Chinese company. (Before you take umbrage, that happens ALL THE TIME.) IMO no foreign companies should be allowed to submit bids on these projects!! How do we know some country -- who may perceive us as an "enemy" -- won't intentionally sabotage some crucial bridge somewhere!?

The reporters FAILED TO MENTION that those U.S. workers would also be paying STATE AND FEDERAL INCOME TAXES, which would have certainly boosted the state's coffers.

I have an extreme fear of bridges which keeps me from venturing anywhere there's a bridge.  Even freeway overpasses affect me in a similar manner.   Others either laugh or get annoyed with me, but I'd give anything to not feel this way, to just be like everyone else.   Does anyone have this problem? ...
