Redistribution of wealth

Posted: Jan 6, 2014

It always fascinating to me that so many of us can look at the same issues and come up with such different conclusions.  Someone mentioned redistribution of wealth and I know that many of you are concerned that your money will be taken away and given to some freeloader down the street.  Here is what redistribution of wealth means to me:  The Walton family has as much wealth as the bottom 40% of the U.S. population yet they pay their employees wages that are so low that the taxpayer subsidizes the company by several billion dollars a year because Wal-Mart employees require public assistance.  I want to see this company redistribute some of their wealth by being required to pay living wages and benefits to their employees.

...but it is not the administration's definition. Remember the sound bites with Joe the plumber. This administration is trying to be a master of two things: Redistrituion of wealth and deflection of blame. Most Americans want no part of it.

Wrong again...1 person 6 + votes does not equal most people - and on top of that....

most people who voted for him want him recalled.

Also, dead people, people's animals, and Disney characters and do not equal most Americans and then those who proudly boasted they voted for him multiple times (more than 6 times for some people)

Sorry, you have to live in the now and understand what is going on in our country right now, not some fairy tale.

That is precisely the administration's definition - old and burned out

[ In Reply To ..]
The redistribution of wealth is an attempt to stop the trend of fewer and fewer persons having more and more of the country's wealth and a better break for the lower and middle classes. Please tell me why it doesn't bother you that Wal-Mart and other large corporations can get away with what they do. I mean this very sincerely.

Here's a question for you? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
What is wrong with capitalism? What is wrong with someone taking a profit when they are probiding jobs for people? Yes, there is absolutely greed involved in this country, but we are not talking about that. We are talking about the president's desire to adopt a socialistic stance. That is NOT what America is about! If you take away the Waltons of the world, just what will the UE numbers reflect then?
There are some things wrong with capitalism - old and burned out
[ In Reply To ..]
as there are with any system. There is something wrong with Wal-Mart paying their employees so little that they require taxpayer money to subsist. There is something wrong with Wal-Mart using child labor in foreign countries. Every year in this country as many people die in preventable industrial accidents as were killed on 09/11. Those accidents were caused by company greed. Forty years ago CEOs earned an average of 40x that of the lowest paid worker in their company. Now it is 240x. Most economists agree that this is unsustainable. We are a consumer driven economy and workers must have enough money to purchase goods and services or the economy comes to a halt. There are companies out there that make a handsome profit and pay living wages. Unfortunately, there are not enough of them.
Excellent reply. - nm

Just how much capitalism is okay with you?

And before you deny it, just Google "Republicans want to do away with child labor laws," and you'll find lots of links to it.

Newt Gingrich wanting to put poor children to work in their schools doing janitorial work but I will google what you suggest. Sounds interesting. I'm not sure why you're asking me how much capitalism is okay with me. I think that there need to be controls on the capitalist system because of the abuses that occur.

That's the problem right there - Mrs Tingles

You stated "that is the administration's definition". Your talking about the same administration who is trying to get everyone to buy into this fallacy that communism is a good thing.

The definition put out by this administration is their interpretation of what they believe it to be, not the truth. Also, they are the redistributionists. They are the ones who are trying to create a destructive society. A society that they will not be part of. They will not contribute any of their wealth of course. They want to take other peoples money and give it to those who don't have anything, but never any of their own.

You got one thing correct. The redistribution of wealth is an attempt to stop people from having more. Unfortunately a lot of people also work harder than others. I don't work 60+ hours a week for the purpose of giving it to those who don't/will not work. That is not what this country is founded on.

In a communist society also, politicians, Wal-Mart, the Facebook CEO, who is bringing in billions, Gates and others will never have their wealth redistributed. Redistribution is a way to bring the middle class down so that they now become part of the poor. Nothing more.

There are a lot of things that bother me, but communism is never the answer. We need to learn from countries where communism reigns. It's never good for the people.

(PS - I'm not the person you replied to). I'm just trying to explain what it really is because a lot of people truly do not fully understand what this would mean for our society. Just not good and that is not what our country is founded on. Like I say if people are so upset living in a free country where people are allowed to dream and achieve the American Dream, then they need to think of other living arrangements so that they can be equal with all the other people who are struggling and starving. It is not and will not happen here. People need to get used to that.
let's talk about definitions, Mrs. Tingles - sm

The definition put out by YOU is that this administration is trying to get everyone to buy into communism.

You have a false syllogism here. I am not the poster you replied to, but your ideation is troubling to me.

Resdistribution of wealth by the government, for example Welfare or Social Security, is egalitarianism put into practice at the point of a gun. This blatant theft is often obscured by the fact that it is voted into place. They claim that the majority of people believe some individuals are deserving of "charity", and people should give some money to them. They say that they don't mind that government is using their money to help the needy. (gee that sounds familiar).

This is an obfuscation, though. If people felt they should be charitable, they could donate on their own. Government is an agency of force. If something can be done voluntary, it wouldn't need to be done by the government. The redistributionists don't just want to give their money, they want to give other people's money away. Specifically, they want to take money from those that have earned it, and given to those that haven't.

Redistribution of wealth is an attack on the successful, and a subsidy to the unsuccessful. Egalitarians aims to achieve equality by bringing down the good to their level. Redistribution of wealth is one method of achieving their goal.

The problem with redistribution of wealth ALSO is that it is unconstitutional and is not what our country is founded on. Who knows, maybe you are so poor you think you are going to get some of Buffets wealth by this. But that is not the way it works in this country (and the really rich never really do give up any of their wealth). Redistribution of wealth is aimed at the middle income to distribute their wealth so that they are now amongst the poor - you know, make us all equal. The ones who institute it never include themselves.

Redistribution of wealth violates the Fifth Amendment. They do not have the right to take something from one person and give it to another. If a person works hard their whole life to make something of their life, they should not be told they need to work more hours so that it can be given to someone else. That logic is just assenine.

Lastly, redistribution of wealth is communism plain and simple. America, while it has communists living in this country, is not a communist country. If people don't like that there are many countries then that they would be happy living in.

And finally the wise words of Ben Stein:

“Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured but not everyone must prove they are a citizen.” -Ben Stein

Now add this, “Many of those who refuse, or are unable, to prove they are citizens will receive free insurance paid for by those who are forced to buy insurance because they are citizens.”

As this is also an important link.

Egalitarianism comes in many forms, all of which are destructive. From equality of opportunity, to equality of results, it always has a single result. Those that have achieved values must sacrifice them to those that don't. Egalitarianism manifest itself as hatred of those that are successful or that have managed to achieve values. Those that have achieved values are despised. They are the ones that have acted to create inequality through the pursuit of happiness. The lazy and incompetent are not to blame. They didn't cause the inequality.

Egalitarianism is just a mask for the hatred of the good. It is not concerned with the well-being of anyone. It only cares that everyone is in the same position, even if that position is starving and helpless. It asks for the destruction of value so that all can be equal. The rich must be made poor. The strong must be made weak. The beautiful must be made ugly. The competent must be made incompetent. The good must be made evil.

Glad you like the articles. I thought the one about Egalitariansism was especially interesting. It just states the facts. Going to check out the other links on the sidebar too. I've been following ProMT's posts as well as yours and enjoy them as well because they are well thought out and just discusses the issues as they are.

I really don't think we are going to change anyone's mind on this board, but if we can prove that some of the info that they post is just not true, then at lease we can say we tried, but people are going to believe what they want to believe no matter whether or not it's the true. I have relatives like that. They don't want to hear the truth, but they also refuse to do any research on their own. There is a poster here that I honestly think is one of my relatives. Both claim they don't watch MSNBC, yet they are both saying the same exact thing word for word. I don't know, maybe they have telepathy abilities. LOL, or maybe she found how to get on this site, but the chances of them both not watching MNSBC, yet saying the exact same thing word for word makes you wonder. We told her she doesn't have to be embarrassed to tell us she watches MSNBC. We used to watch it too, but to sit and state she doesn't when what she is saying was what Matthews said the night before. Well...just kind of freaky. LOL

Glad you like my posts. Keep posting. We may not change peoples minds, but maybe we can disseminate some of the false statements and hysteria.

...like Abby pointed out.

On a side note, I was once a democrat, but saw the light and voted Republican for the first time to get Ronald Reagan in for his second term.

My parents were democrats until one day we had a casual Q and A session. I asked them a series of questions about certain hot bed issues. To their surprise (not mine), they realized they indeed had conservative-leaning values. They, too, are now voting Republican.
My whole family pretty much votes dem, except my mom - but not anymore....Mrs. Tingles

In fact my dad was at a military base shopping (or so he thought) until he got there and found out the dems had shut govt down. Soldiers could not get groceries for their families on the base. They were all telling my dad "Gee thanks Obama. How are we supposed to provide for our families". I think the country is really starting to wake up. Americans (to the democrats surprise) are not stupid. We understand the issues better than they want to believe.

Excited for November.
November will be awesome for the Democrats. Why are you excited? - Reps will

destroy each other before they meet the democrats. Same for 2016.

What an embarrassment for what was the GOP.
I'm excited because it will be great watching more - dems lose seats
[ In Reply To ..]
Its exciting because more and more people are waking up to what is happening. Unfortunately people's lives have been destroyed and they are full aware that it is because of the dems as to why this is happening. OC will be the biggest issue. More people without insurance now that used to have insurance before. More taxes on the middle income. It's a mess and I that's why democrats are in a meltdown. Americans know that dems have no been working with republicans to make their lives better. They are tired of it all and in the end the dems will lose more seats.

November I will be singing "It's going to be a great day".
I don't think so. OC will be working a lot better by then. TP will be sucked into their - extremist mantras

and dems will prevail. Mark my words.
It's good to have dreams. I happen to disagree - with yours
[ In Reply To ..]
I believe because of the failures of this administration/democrats and especially because of OC more dems will lose seats.

Nobody actually knows what will happen, unless either 1 - you have a crystal ball or 2 - you know the elections are rigged.

So I will just have to say I disagree with you. I cannot believe the country is going to continue on its current course of destruction. I have hopes for better lives for everyone. That's why I believe more democrats will lose seats. Americans are smarter than democrats want to believe they are.

I'm looking forward to November.
It's just a mere prediction, not a dream - sm

based on the fact that Americans are not up for any more TP stunts, like the gov shutdown.

America is not on a course of destruction. All indicators are pointing to just the opposite, deficit has been reduced, housing market improving, GDP up, unemployment down, stock market soaring.

Democratic candidates appeal to people, especially minorities and women. TP/GOP has no clue yet how to do this.

I look forward also to November, but especially the GOP primaries. Watching the TP V Reps will be quite entertaining for Democrats.

I hope the GOP continues its mission of doing away with the TP. That's a win - for us all

But the GOP is sorely weakened by the TP and they will be a casualty of the extremism they allowed for too long.

No way America will ever tolerate the TP. Not recognizing this fact is is a perfect example of really being out of touch. Replay of Fox 2012 denial coming. Prepare yourself.

Oh, wow. We finally have someone who knows what (sm) - Abby
