I confess: I believe in wealth redistribution

Posted: Aug 4, 2011

This is a youtube video from Al Jazeera English--now on New York cable. Why do other country's networks seem to cover the US better than our own media?;

Taxes should go up for offshoring co's, and go - down for those who hire US, only.

The sense of entitlement, especially of the Harvard grads - was nauseating

And the conservative talk about the "liberal elitism." Like they said--the issues are already framed.

The sense of entitlement, especially among megacorps, financial sectors, - big oil and ubers

of iron-clad immunity from shouldering their fair share of the sacrifices needed to overcome economic recession, ESPECIALLY where jobs loss/creation comes into play, is beyond nauseating. They are sitting on top of RECORD PROFITS, whining about their alleged loss of confidence, all the while downsizing, laying off, door shuttering, offshoring, outsourcing and investing in overseas markets. These are the so called patriots (NOT!) to whom conservatives cow-tow, and whom they so blindly defend and protect. It has escalated lately to the level of mindless idol worship, to such an extent that it borders on mass insanity.

These are the same brain-dead fools who over the past few weeks have insisted that default is no biggie, the debt ceiling does not matter and that ideological squabbles rule supreme over such mundane principles as logic, common sense, intelligence and knowledge. One look at the stock market plunge today tells us otherwise.

Try ditching the "liberal elitism" drivel and FRAME THAT into the dialog.

Concern about the media - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
We have had a lot of discussions about MSNBC and Fox on this board, but I am almost more concerned about our local and regional media. For example, our regional newspaper (that many conservatives accuse of being liberally biased) had a poll recently about the budget. I voted and when you vote, you can check the current results. The poll was running in favor of passing a "clean debt ceiling" bill by 4 to 1. I was reaffirmed that our local population were not all nincompoops. But, when I went back to check the poll about 4 hours later, all traces of the poll were gone. I searched using every search tool I could think of and could not find it.

When I was watching Wisconsin's Union fight this winter, I was totally shocked to NOT see the thousands that were marching on the capitol on national TV. Instead I saw a TP rally with about 15 people.

The last couple of days, even though the companies are reporting great earnings reports, unemployment claims were down, and retailers had a good July, the financial news is focusing on the "coming recession." Here is what is causing the "recession". The "news" constant drum beat about the "coming recession" is causing the recession. A self-fulfilling prophecy.

Anyone remember the Bush drum beat to war in Iraq. Where was the questioning media then?

You are seeing what you want to see. Economy is in - the toilet and Dow down 400 pts, gas prices up,

[ In Reply To ..]
not nearly enough jobs out there to solve unemployment crisis with thousands more to be laid off soon. Sometimes there is too much scary news from the media, but overall, the media has had a love affair with Obama. The truth finally comes out. He is just a clueless president.

Ya see, that's where you are wrong - sm

The stock market should reflect the value of the the business in the market.

For instance:

The Big Five oil companies this week announced they had made a whopping $36 billion in profits in the second quarter of 2011.

According to second-quarter earnings reports, ExxonMobil alone made $10.7 billion in the most recent three months. That's a 41 percent increase over the same period last year and a 161 percent increase over 2009.

The market should be doing great. Everyone is selling into media-driven fear. Who is controlling the media, especially the financial media?

when the market went down it was of because of Obamacare, but then it went up because the Republicans were in, but and then it went down because the government was spending too much, but then they passed the spending cuts, but it still went down, so obviously it is Obama's fault. You need a new recording to play.

[ In Reply To ..]
and all we get from the fringers is a big fat collective d-d-d-duuuuhhhh. Global perceptions of tea party stupidity MATTER. Most of us understand that when faced with debt, a budget can only be cut so far and that, ummmm, beyond that, a little revenue raising is in order.
Reality check: New study shows in Jan 2009 the economy - was contracting by a whopping 8.9%!
[ In Reply To ..]
Fact is the stimulus should have been much bigger, so yes, the pubs should have listened to the President, then and now. Their policies are abject failures no matter how you slice it.

This is onliy half correct - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
As a progressive, I have to point out that not all of your facts are correct. The unemployment claims are increasing this month as the pharmaceutical industry and the service sector- including retail- have started laying off large numbers of people. Retail numbers were not bad, but they were by no means even very good.

However, the corporations are indeed reporting record profit, much higher than they were predicted, so they are all on cloud 9. All that money and so few taxes!!

I have to wonder if the continued plunge of the market, though, is an indicator that they realize that they may be reaching the end of record profits. They have offshored to the lowest price continents and they've got no place left to move them to save a buck. They've gutted the American employment market who can no longer afford to buy- and that top 1% of the population only needs so many of their widgets.

So there's not enough employees here left to fire to increase your bottom line, there's not any other cheaper labor market to send it to in order to make a profit, and there's nobody left here who can afford to buy your stuff so you can make a profit. No wonder the market is tanking.

You also missed that - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
The hedge fund managers were probably licking their lips over a protracted budget debacle and it ended too soon. They now must continue shorting the stocks untill everyone sells out really cheap, and then they can drive the market back up again, probably about October.

Redistribution Of WealthJan 06, 2014
It always fascinating to me that so many of us can look at the same issues and come up with such different conclusions.  Someone mentioned redistribution of wealth and I know that many of you are concerned that your money will be taken away and given to some freeloader down the street.  Here is what redistribution of wealth means to me:  The Walton family has as much wealth as the bottom 40% of the U.S. population yet they pay their employees wages that are so low that the taxpaye ...
