Ah, yes. Marginal tax rates of 14% on low end and - 77% on the high end

with President Nixon, a self-proclaimed "Keynesian" economist, democrats dominating Congress (House 243-Ds and 192 Rs and Senate 57-Ds and 43 Rs), overseeing economic expansion associated with those times. Happy days indeed.

Maybe people like to be reminded of happier times - when you're young (sm)

before politics dominated every aspect of their lives. Why so negative, like Thor the Destroyer.
I view that description of the economy and tax rate structure as a - very fond memory

but I was already in college in 1969 and politically active, so it is virtually IMPOSSIBLE for me to view those times outside that context, having been thrust into that world even as an elementary school student during Cold War years, what with the nuclear attack "duck and cover" drills when we hit the floor, cowering under our desks, and the ease-dropping I did on conversations about the pros and cons of building a bomb shelter in the back yard my dad and mom had after they thought I had gone to sleep.

At age 14 there was the assassination of JFK. Grew up fast after that with an acute awareness of civil rights struggles, then assassinations x2 in 1968, first MLK, then RFK. Picking a major in college was heavily influenced by pre-feminist social imperatives of finding a husband, having kids and the sense that there were only a couple of acceptable fields for a female to choose from (home economics, teaching and nursing). Feminist issues invaded my life again when a rape at age 17 left me pregnant and my only choices were an unwed mothers' home or an illegal abortion across the border in Mexico (I was too scared of coat hangers). By the time 1969 rolled around, I had watched many of my friends get shipped off to Viet Nam after their draft numbers came up. My best friend in junior and senior high school never made it back. To this day, that loss still makes me cry.

So you'll have to EXCUUUUSE me if the way I took my trip down memory lane rained on somebody's else's parade. It was entirely unintentional. BTW, I am WAY too old to know who Thor the Destroyer is....or to care.

You just made a good case for lower taxes, - JFK lowered taxes. nm

Really? JFK rates = 20% on low end and 91% - on high end. Today
[ In Reply To ..]
they are 10% on the low end and 35% on the high end. That's the lowest they've been in 72 years for the low end and 83 years for the high end (the rate high-end taxes were when the crash happened, ushering in the Great Depression!).

Perhaps next time you could try filling in that blank before posting.
Imagine what a 90% tax on our billionaires would - do to rebuild the middle class.nm

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZBTyTWOZCM   Someone posted this on FB and I thought it was really good.  I think it would do us all good to remember why we say The Pledge of Allegiance and what it really means instead of just saying the words without really meaning them. ...

Don't ya just love this legal team? I didn't know this! It took place in 2004! He will just claim it was a business deal and we all know he does whatever is necessary to "WIN."    I was proud of Jeb Bush for being able to speak fluent Spanish and speak with the constituency that he was amongst. Heaven forbid if people had felt that way about German, Polish, Italian.   Did surprise me a bit when I caught a commercial the other day that was completely in Spanish and I was not on Telemundo.  It was a public service announcement about not mixing raw me ...

Yet Another Republican Dumping Norquists' No 20-year-old No-tax Pledge.Nov 24, 2012
and I just have a disagreement with him about that.” I'm jazzed because this particular one of several lawmakers, after 20 years of us all learning the hard, bitter, stupid way, is one of my Georgia Senators. From the Wall Street Journal: Another Republican is backing away from a pledge not to raise taxes, just as Congress prepares to reconvene on Monday and dive back into talks to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff. A Thanksgiving Day comment by Georgia Republican Sen. Saxby C ...

Mass. Supreme Court Ruled On Pledge Case..smMay 09, 2014
In this case, a family sued on the grounds that having the Pledge Allegiance recited in school everyday discriminated against their children because they did not follow/worship the Christian God. While their children (and all U.S. children) are free to not recite it, it was argued that non-pledgers were discriminated against, treated as un-American, and un-patriotic, and ridiculed as such. Additionally, even if they wanted to demonstrate their patriotism, these students could not because "Under ...

"Four Big-Name Republicans Back Off Norquist Pledge."Nov 26, 2012
" From the Washington Post: "Four big-name Republicans have broken with Grover Norquist in recent days, saying they won’t be bound by their Norquist-sponsored pledges to oppose any and all tax increases. The moves by Sens. Lindsey Graham (S.C.), Bob Corker (Tenn.) and Saxby Chambliss (Ga.) and Rep. Peter King (N.Y.) represent the opening steps of a delicate dance for the GOP — and one that could come to define the just-begun talks over the looming “fiscal cliff.” ...
